My eight year old granddaughter got bored while shopping at a mall with her mother in Statesboro, GA, recently so she and her girlfriend went wandering.
They saw a Marine Corps Recruiting office and went into it to visit.
She told the recruiter her Papaw is a Marine.
Like Papaw, the recruiter couldn't resist this little blonde beauty (this is an objective view) and made her an honorary Marine. He gave her a certificiate and a pin.
She visited Atlanta the other day with her mom and asked me why I joined the Marines. The question surprised me and it took a second or two to come up with an answer.
Truth is, I'd wanted to be a Marine since I can remember.
And then the reason came on like a lightbulb in my brain:
I wanted to be the best, I told her.
It wasn't a conscious thing, I guess, until I told her.
