"We didn't promise you a ROSE GARDEN" Now as for this old retired Marine, I am sure glad that they didn't promise me a ROSE GARDEN when I first enlisted. Rose gardens can be just a few feet in area to well very large gardens grow to 5 ft high, planted 2 ft apart. Just imagine having to run through a rose garden in just you birthday suit, man you would come out a bloody mess. Think about it.:marine:  :

Sounds like it would be good practice for dancing between three-prong detonators on AP mines.
One night, in Nam, we set up in an squad size ambush. When it got light enough to see, one guy barked "FREEZE" in a tight voice. We discovered ourselves to be in the middle of a minefield. Lots of three-prong trips all around our positions. We had been among them the whole night. It took twentyfive minutes for the seven of us to go 10 meters, back to the path we had arrived on. I'll take the Rose Garden with its thorns anyday.

LOL You got that right, Gunny. My legs were shakin' until we all got clear. Why one of us didn't trip a mine in the dark is a mystery, and must be one of the miracles God granted Marines in that war.

Naw, my skivvies remained unsoiled. I shook for awhile, though.
While we were probing and creeping slowly toward safety, I was struck by a terrible thought. What would have happened if a line of dinks had come trooping up the trail at that moment? We were plainly visible by then. There was no way we could have rushed to cover if we had been fired upon.

Each of us was precariously balanced on our knees and the toes of our boots. If one of us had triggered a mine, the blast would have knocked the rest of us off balance. We would have triggered other mines as we fell to the deck. Until we were clear, I was as tense as a guitar string.

When we finally left the area, I felt like a little kid who had gotten away with stealing a freshly baked apple pie cooling in an open window. It was an astounding sense of elation. Good golly Miss Molly!!

Gunny, you might want to check with the Drifter.
I believe he is one of the men, if not the man, who set up this perimeter.
He should know.

Semper Fi!
