Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone,

I'm currently a LCpl (picking up Cpl next quarter) in the Marine Reserves going on 3.5 years into my 6 year contract. My current MOS is 0411 (Maintenance Management Specialist), and I haven't touched anything pertaining to my MOS since I left MOS School. I'm currently trying to LAT Move to Recon, still staying in the Reserves. I have contacted my career planner and he told me a month ago that he was going to contact a screener for me to get the process rolling.

The reason I'm here is just so I can clear some questions that I have. I guess my main question is simply will they accept me from a non-infantry MOS even as a Corporal? I understand that since I'm obligated to my unit, that makes it more difficult generally. However, I am in an excess billet so I pretty much officially don't have a job there.

Also, would I be overstepping my boundaries as a LCpl if I called the 4th Recon unit in San Antonio and talked to them myself? I know it would be best to let my career planner do the talking, but I'm the kind of person who firmly believes in "If you want something done right, do it yourself."

What do y'all think? Sorry for the somewhat lengthy post.

(Also, I am aware of the physical requirements and I am preparing for them.)

I'd suggest you NOT call the 4th Recon Unit. You might suggest your planner give them a call. Then follow-up with him to inquire if he did call - if he didn't ask him why. Good Luck.

Let the Career Planner do their job and be patient. You're not their only concern, and there were packets on their desk before they added yours to the bottom of the stack (ones before you have priority). I was a Battalion Career Planner for a couple years (Company Career Planner prior to that) and everybody expects you to drop everything else you were doing and just work their specific request. It doesn't work that way.

As far as not working in your MOS, that is common in a reserve unit (I'm sure you know others doing the same thing). If you go to a new reserve unit, you'll see the same thing there as well. There simply are not enough appropriate billets to plug everyone into where they belong.

I'm assuming you have researched how long it would take you to commute to the recon unit in San Antonio for drill weekends and are good with it.

Good luck Devil. Come back and let us know how this worked out for you.

So you're a Lance Corporal. Here are three certainties:

If you go ahead and call, at worst case, you will get an ass chewing. If you don't call, nothing will happen. If you call your planner, nothing will happen.

There is a slight chance that taking action can get you what you want, whatever that is. Don't let a messageboard stand in your way, or a phone cal...

But you better be hot ****.
