McFarland Sworn In As VA Assistant Secretary

WASHINGTON (Jan. 30, 2004) - Robert N. McFarland was sworn in today as
assistant secretary for information and technology (IT) in the Department of
Veterans Affairs (VA).

"Robert McFarland brings extensive experience in leading large organizations

Anthony J. Principi. "The important work of honoring our veterans and
safeguarding their records are in good hands."

As both the assistant secretary and chief information officer, McFarland
will be the principle advisor to Principi on information and technology
management. The office provides advice and assistance to ensure that IT
systems are acquired and information resources are managed properly.

Before coming to VA, McFarland served as vice president of government
relations for Dell Computer Corporation, where he earlier managed the
military, federal, state and local government business as vice president and
general manager of the government sector.

McFarland, an Army Vietnam veteran, holds a bachelor's degree in business
management from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.
