Updated: 10:01 a.m. ET Feb. 02, 2004NEW YORK - CBS and MTV both say they had no idea that their Super Bowl halftime show would wind up with singer Justin Timberlake tearing off part of Janet Jackson’s costume, exposing her breast. Timberlake blamed a “wardrobe malfunction.”



“CBS deeply regrets the incident,” spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said after the network received calls about the Sunday night show.

The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song’s finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson’s leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast. Her nipple was covered by a pastie.

The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.


The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS’ corporate cousin in Viacom.

“We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show,” Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. “They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.

“It’s unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime.”

MTV issued a contrite statement in which it also apologized, saying the incident was “unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance.”

Timberlake said he did not intend to expose Jackson’s breast.

“I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl,” Timberlake said in a statement. “It was not intentional and is regrettable.”

Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, “and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS’ broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended.”

Some of the poorest excuses I've ever read from a national TV network. The backpedaling by everyone involved is phenomenal. I believe the apologies as much as I believe John Kerry never intended to toss his medals and decorations over the White House fence three decades ago.

Perhaps there is room for Janet Jackson at her brother's defense table? He grabbed his crotch, she grabs her breast. Must run in the family.

With the problems facing us all over this earth...I think this would be a non-issue.
Some channels on TV show more than a woman breast.
Than there the movies, not only porno that show total or partical nudity.
I might be in the minority on this issue.
But all of the above are my opinion on a non-issue...

I had filed a complaint with CBS as soon as it happened.
I am appalled they would let something like that happen.
It was a sporting event. Not an MTV awards ceremony.
There were children watching.

I do believe it was planned by Janet and Justin. C'mon, when was the last time Janet sold an album...everything now a days is about money.
I would be happy to not have any half time show during any pro ball event.

I agree with you 100%. The half time "entertainment" was geared for the MTV demographics.
Now, I really enjoyed the National Anthem. (a song where all the words were understandable) It was sung with style, grace and not a whole lot of vocal gymnatics. The very beautiful woman who sang it didn't have to have her pectoral area showing to get attention.

I'm not meaning to be disagreeable but the non-issue here is an issue because of the venue. There was no warning when this came out of left field and into the homes of familes who do not wish to have their children view this kind of activity. What happened to "Prime Time Screening"?

Sure it's all over the waves but we know it's there and can avoid it and protect children from it.

I'm with sparrowhawk- it's too convenient that the song ends that way for them to not have tried to incoporate something like this.

Justin sure doesn't look shocked in the picture- at least not in the type of shocked he would be if it were a mistake.

Janet's not exactly ashamed of her body either. Look at the album cover for her self titled album, and at the cover for the single "All for you"..............

Osotogary- I agree that Beyonce did a good job on the National Anthem, but she is the same who wore cut up military uniforms (Navy and USMC mainly) to promote the Destiny's Child song "survivor". I am talking cut our uniforms up into "hoochie gear" complete with ribbons and badges, chevrons, etc.... She's not above letting her body parts hang out either.

There was nothing accidental about the "Jackson nip assult" It was planned, coordinated and carried out purposefully. All the claims to the contrary are pure BS. To me it was in poor taste but hardly a surprise. I was also bothered by Kid Rock's tearing up the flag and wearing it as a poncho. I was sitting with my 10 year old son while all this went down and he said nothing to me until this morning. And he was not all that bothered other than to say "why did they have to do something like that?" We'll all survive this I am sure and in the greater view of life today, and the issues that are with us, then JJ's tit is not that big a deal....Tacky but predictable.

This shoud have been expected from MTV, it happens all the time on their TV show. So why should they change anything for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. It goes to show where SOME of our younger generation is coming from, to perform in front of millions of people, Janet Jackson was looking the get her ratings up, after all Michael may be a has been soon and someone has to keep the bucks coming in.

I think this does fold into larger events. The Super Bowl wasn't just broadcast within the borders of the USA. It went global, and was seen by an estimated 1 billion viewers overall. Some of those viewers may have thought it was nothing extraordinary, but others were undoubtably angered by the display of flesh on the big screen, when they don't allow their wives to step outside of the bedroom without wearing a full concealment body tent. Certain enemies could point to the halftime boob flash and declare we are trying to subvert their culture with the "sex show" during our biggest sporting event of the year.

You and I know its no big thing (sorry about that, Janet), but it could be used as a rally point against our efforts to normalize Iraq. It would affect our influence in other Islamic countries of the Middle East as well. If someone is looking for a reason to point the finger at us and stir up hatred, this gives them ammunition to use. I know this sounds far fetched, but it is a real possiblity. Thats how I see it.

If I say I didn't do it intentionally, pretend it never happened or I lie about it, then I shouldn't be held responsible for my own actions! Bill got away with it, so why can't we? Janet can be forgiven! Michael on the other hand is beyond help! Look at the guy! Can you honestly say he isn't a perfect candidate/poster "man" for child molestation! On TV and movies we have the choice in what we want our children to watch, in this case we didn't. Then it gave parents the tool to teach their children about sex, why women have larger Brest that men, I agree that the only difference was that Janit had a cover on her nipple, well to be frank the nipple was what held it on. If you watch MTV you will see just as much on most of the Artist that performs on that show, they show all but their nipples. If I want to look at a well formed womans Brest then I can pick up a copy of Playboy, this way my children will not be exposed to it.
I don't know if you are married, if you are, would you want your wife or your daughter to go around with one of their Brest hanging out at a party or in Church? Or your son with his hand on his crotch as if he has crabs. Janit Jackson cannot and never could sing, this is her way to sell Albums. Maybe she's trying to get the pressure off of her brother Michael, weirdo must run in the Jackson family.
