Independence Day of the United States (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States), also referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth in the U.S., is a federal holiday (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_holidays_in_the_United_States) commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence) on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen_colonies) regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire).

That was a big big move and not everyone agreed with the idea of actually doing it.

After declaring independence, it (the Revolutionary War) was a close call many many times, and if it hadn't been for George Washington, we might never have won. He made mistakes, many of them, but he, in my humble opinion, is the one person MOST responsible for the American victory.
