With all of this wonderful computer wizardly running amok these days and such, I'm looking for insightful knowledge about Win 10...

I currently am still using win 8.1 on both the Laptop and main systems, and like many others (assuming) get bombarded with the Windows 10 every time I turn around..

Tonight, I noticed it had a cut off date of July 29th as the last day for "FREE" upload...

Here is the question: Is it worth the upload, seeing as how it is free at this point...??

I'm aware of every OS that has come out over the years and many of the issues it comes with..

I'm interested to hear some of the pros/cons of Win10..

Okay Computer Wizards, time to whip that worldly wisdom upon us that are just users...!!!

That's a really good question FO. While I can't answer it, I too hope someone can shed some light on it for us.

I shifted to Windows 10 some months ago. For me, the transition worked smoothly and I had few issues However, I have friends who had no end of problems and went back to 8.1. Other friends were like me, few issues.

Now that 10 has been out for a while, I think Microsoft has worked out many of the bugs that plagued my friends.

A consideration is that MS will drop support for Windows 8 and 8.1 in the not too distant future, and then you'll have to pay for Windows 10.

Like anything in life, "You pays your money and you takes your chances."

I downloaded the free version about a year ago. I had several problems with it, things didn't work right. Over several months they sent updates to fix the problems. some worked some caused more problems. Right now everything is working great, guess they finally got the bugs worked out. anyway that was my experience with it.

I have Windows 10 that Microsoft
put on while I was playing solitare.

I was piźzed and had problems.

I didn't like that it was put on while
8.1 was still on the computer.

Did a clean install over 60 days ago and have had no problems.

A little different....

I don't like change but I deal with it!

I'm with Advanced and Top. Mac is the way to go. I boarded the Apple train back in 2011 when my Dell laptop cratered on me out of the blue. Never looked back.

2011 when my Dell laptop cratered on me out of the blue. Never looked back.

Sure, I understand perfectly Mandi... That does happen frequently when thrown down on the deck in a molten rage of discontent when those laptops decide to act out...

Absolutely, without a doubt...!!!

Okay then... I count 3 for Mac's... about 3.5 for toleration of MS 10.. and 1 for a bilngual Linux solution...

That's still an issue, give in to massive exposure of private info through MS, as well as Apple... Both want to control everything you do...

Or...???

I'm listening.... There's got to be more than 7-8 folks out there with information on this stuff...

I Hate to tell you 'non-believers'

I start my operating system on a clean start
every morning -
I don't worry about VIRUS attacks-
i have a firewall that gives me 100% protection.

WHEN i shut my linux system down - i can shift
back onto my MICROSOFT paid for operating system
i don't use microsoft OR windows "Internet Explorer" to
connect with the internet.

my LINUX problems are MINOR compaired to what
i lived with in the past...

this version of linux i am playing with now -
does a CLEAN new install when i pushed the
start switch-
took no longer than 2 miniutes -
and would take less than half that if i did an
INSTALL of this operating system
onto my machine.....

oh - by the by -
for those of you who will know what i am
trying to say-
all this with a load of ONLY
243 mega bytes of ram used to run it -
on this machine - that leaves me 3.6 or so GIGS of ram
left unused for a quick scratchpad if i need or want
to play with it.

If I can remember correctly, he does in fact stop by now and again to look around..

Well, it looks like it's a contest now between a "Mac" , and the "LINUX" OS system..

There are still some extenuating factors to be considered ...

Which means that "Windows" anything is toast...

Stay tuned...!!!

I suggest that you go ahead and download the windows 10 and SAVE it on both computers... then do an INSTALL on only ONE to "try it out" it is different, but not too bad, once you get used to it.... if you don't like it, remove it and go back to 7 or 8.... I did that with Windows 7, and after fooling with 10 for a couple of weeks, I find it is not too bad at all...

Found a couple of these for $1000-1200...

13.3" - 15" Between 2014-15
2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
512 GB SSD Flash Storage
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

The MacBook has under 250 Battery Cycle Counts, so it has Barely been used.

Good - Bad - Indifferent...???

I'm looking over some list's from Craig's list... For starters....

Copy that one Top... I figured I'd download Win 10 to one later this evening..

Try Linux on another laptop....

Keep the primary as is for now...

And look at some of those Apple Machines...

Fortunately I have options...

(3) laptops + 2 desktops...

FO - a 15" MBP with those specs for a grand is a GREAT deal. That's exactly what I just ordered for work for a replacement to my old one, and their list price was about $2500!

If you want to go Mac, that's an excellent start.

ask yourself what you are going to use
the new gear for -perhaps BEFORE spending
money ?????

as far as LINUX -

I advise against it -
Unlike WINDOWS where everyone
knows everything .
Linux is a system where No-One knows
near enough.
Linux is like growing up stupid
but it is IDEAL if you don't listen to anyone.
Best you forget i mentioned anything about
linux.

Firefox to get
massive privacy boost
with - Tor integration

The browser world is a fiercely fought arena, and Firefox is about to make a move in order to become more competitive with rivals like Chrome, planning to draft across some of the privacy settings seen in the Tor browser.
The Tor browser is actually based on the same code as Firefox (Firefox ESR, which stands for Extended Support Release), and bounces communications through numerous encrypted nodes on the net, meaning the user can't be traced, and generally maintaining privacy (and security) to high levels.
According to Ghacks (http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/04/tor-privacy-settings-coming-to-firefox/), Mozilla is planning to integrate some of these privacy-preserving tricks into Firefox, with several basic features already in version 50 of the browser (which is in preview).

fortunately, you CAN download and SAVE the upgrade, without installing if you like, then if you decide to continue use of 10, install later on the others...
