What do you miss mostly being out of the Corps?

THE DEDICATED TEAMWORK.

THE SATISFACTION OF SEEING DAILY RESULTS OF DOING A JOB...STRIVING FOR PERFECTION FOR THE SAKE OF BEING THE BEST WITH NO EXTRA REWARDS.

THE UNIFORM.

BEING ABLE TO DROP AND GIVING 20... :D

:marine:Roger, you olde codger, that is a ...heady...question, for me at least...I'd make a pact with the God of War to be 20 again and in the Far East waging war in the Fleet Marine Force...I have had a smattering of..Posts of the Corps...while serving and none, not one, measures up to being being a volunteer Marine in the Fleet Marine Force....you want action, Marine??...the FMF will see that you will have all that adventure...and beyond that, I kid you naught...faithful/unflagging service in the FMF will enrich you and keep you in good stead for the rest of your life...civilian life cannot mirror the lifestyle of young Marines seared by battle...the FMF is the acid test for a Marine..nonpareil, yes, nonpareil!!....thx Roger...for the memory of halycon days of brash/valiant youth in the Fleet Marine Force. Serving with some of the BEST of BEST Marines in Recon!!!
I still remember all the good times, we shared together.
My Platoon Leader was 1st. Lt. Frank Stanley Reasoner USMC.
Sad, that he died in Vietnam, trying to save his radioman.
Yet knowing my Platoon Leader of 1965 and before,
in Bravo Company 3rd Recon,
I know that he would have done the above.
L/Cpl Randall Kenneth Campbell USMC
PFC John Raymond USMC
PFC Carl R. Wenzel USMC
Are a few of the FEW that I served with in
Bravo Company 3rd Recon
I miss their laughter and close friendship...

Sense of accomplishment under difficult circumstances.
Knowing I was a small part of the best thing on God's green earth.
Feeling the true worth and value of a single warm beer, a few minutes to enjoy it with good Marines, knowing it could possibly be the last one for any of us.
Bending over to blouse my bootsand wondering if I was wrinkling my creases. :)
The smell of JP-5.
The relief of seeing the last bird make it back ok at the end of the day.

Hearing a bellhop or taxi driver ask "You want girl?" :)

The camaraderie, the discipline, the uniform...a different way of life.

The quote of the day:
faithful/unflagging service in the FMF will enrich you and keep you in good stead for the rest of your life...civilian life cannot mirror the lifestyle of a young Marine seared by battle

You said a mouthfull there!!

(but then again-none of us are really "out of the Corps" -are we?)

Being in the darkness by myself and ask who are you? And answer with a loud oorah. My eyes open and I have my brothers all around me. It's the feeling of camaraderie and the fact that there is no one I'd rather give my life for. The sweat we shared, the blood we tasted, the tears we kept only amongst ourselves. Whenever I put on any of my uniforms, that is what rushes over me and what I miss the most. Oh yeah, all the nights we got plastered and acted like we had no care in the world. And curing our hangovers the next day with a shot of Jose and a cold one.

All I can say to my lost brothers and those still on God's green earth, is Semper Fidelis.

Youth, being with friends who are more like brothers, never meeting a stranger, endless nights of war stories that everyone can relate to. All the *****ing and griping that had no purpose. ESPIRIT DE CORPS.

I miss putting on the uniform, the close friends made and the pride of being an active duty Marine. I miss the jeepney rides to Subic City from Olongapo for a Red Horse or San Miguel. I have never met a finer group of professionals, hellraisers, and warriors called Marines in my life.

I miss the teamwork the most. Now days in civilian life the
young people all have a me first let some one else do it attitude.
They'd never make it in the Corps.

The Corps:
Took a fat, awkward kid (me), and released the Marine inside.
Got me into the best physical shape of my entire life.
Taught me skills and instilled traits which serve me to this day.
Showed me I had more on tap than I ever knew was possible.
Taught me a love for the Rifle and its capabilities.
Heightened my physical senses and showed me how to take advantage of them.
Issued me uniforms for all seasons, and which set me apart from all the other armed services.
Struck the fear of God into me when I screwed up.
Provided ocean cruises, all expenses paid, to interesting, exotic places.
Gave me sea legs, so I could stand on a rolling, pitching deck and smoke a cigarette unpreturbed.
Convinced me there is no substitute for Victory.
Surrounded me with brothers who would give their lives for me, as I would for them.
Took care of me when I was wounded in battle.
Taught me to sing (all three stanzas)
Impressed on me the meaning of Honor, Pride, Confidence, Esprit de Corps, and History.
Reminded me of the long line of Leatherneck ghosts who paid the price to keep this nation free, some of whom I knew personally.
Gave me more than I can ever possibly repay.

Thats what I miss the most, being out of the Corps.

I miss the camaraderie most of all. I can honestly say that I've never been around a finer bunch of men in my life. Many is the day that I wish I'd never gotten out, everything else that I've done since then has been small compared to what we did as active Marines.

Nobody says it better than Namgrunt. In retrospect, one of the things I miss are some of the crazy escapades my buddies and I would pull off while on liberty. Some of the things we did were outrageously funny, but wouldn't have been so funny if we got caught. I'll quit while I'm ahead.

All the above PLUS:

Capping off a few rounds on a DOG target,

Marine Corps Balls (the parties not the nut sack!),

The Top screaming at an idiot with an unsat haircut or poor shave,

Being a Lance Coolie with 3 years in and knowing so much more about the FMF than a butter-bar lieutenant,

Knowing that walking around with a clipboard "looking busy", was a near perfect skate,

Flirting with the WM Corporal at the armory during weapon turn-in and her NOT shoving a q-tip in the breach of your weapon,

Not having to polish your anodized brass,

And finally, being the CO’s radioman and knowing everything that’s going on before anyone else in the regiment.

What do you miss mostly being out of the Corps?
Sorry I don't have time to write a book. One thing that no one has posted yet, the honor to have served my country, I don't miss the "jeepney rides to Subic City from Olongapooh". "The fact that I was the meanest S.O.B. in the valley! GET SOME!!!!!!" get in line son. Travel to places like the french Rivera; Naples, Italy; Athens , Greece; Kores , Vietnam and my full military pay and "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" LOL
