I work for Louisiana Dept of Veterans Affairs. I am assisting a Marine who was wounded in combat in June 1967. We are trying to have his purple heart awarded to him. His name is Kenneth White. He was wounded on October 22, 1967 near Hill 65 in Quang Nam. Kenneth is from Louisiana. He served in the 1st Division, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. I am looking for anyone who remembers Kenneth/ served with him.

Hi, I'm not sure im posting this in the right place but I would like to find out what platoon my dad was in when he graduated from boot camp at Parris Island. I have his DD214 and his date of entry is december 27, 1966...Would this be the graduation date or is it before this? I would love to have a yearbook but cant order one if i dont know that information. Thanks!!!

Just some information for you Marines that didn't know..
Both Parris Island and San Diego reused Platoon numbers For instance I had platoon 114 in boot camp and they used it over and over for other platoons..So if you see a Platoon book and it has your platoon number but the wrong year that's why..
Don't give up hopefully you'll find it..

I am going through the same circumstance as the Marine you're helping Kenneth White. I was wounded in Dai Do, Vietnam in 1968 and medevaced to an Army MASH unit in Da Nang. Somehow/someway my medical records were never transferred from the Army MASH unit to my unit 3rd Tank Battalion (USMC). I have submitted the appropriate paperwork DD149.

I was denied my purple heart because they could not verify that I was wounded through medical records. I was told my medical records would be sent to my command, which they never were. Is there anything I can do to get my Purple Heart? It's been such a long time that I have almost given up on trying to pursue getting my Purple Heart, until I read your e-mail.

I read about Dai Do hell and there is a documentary on YT still available (I think).

Yes....saw your response....glad to help.

Back in 2008 I began researching my SE Asian history and managed to find all the AAR's for my unit (W/2/11) during my time.
They can corroborate one's memories and my memory of it all certainly wasn't going to get better as I hit 70. :)
I also downloaded AAR's for other units in the 1st MarDiv that we were attached to (1st MarDiv, BLT 1/5. III MAF, 1/5, 2/5, 3/5) which were also informative/interesting reading.

Yes....it takes some digging and going beyond page 1 of your Google searching.

Anyway....good fortune to you on your quest for more information.

It is going to take a lot of digging and work. Hopefully there are still records somewhere. I am positive there was no research done to retrieving my medical records from the Army when I submitted form DD 149. Or such poor records were kept in Vietnam that they may have been destroyed if they were received by my unit?

Russ....if you haven't done this already....

I'll throw out one more option for you to pursue which I would say is a protocol for someone like yourself.
In the link below you can request copies of your military records.
See the middle box at top of the page regarding the form SF-180.
Fill it out completely and accurately.....and just wait it out.

It will take months but you will be current with what they have for on record for you.
You never know what gems of info you may uncover.

Yes....I did it some a few year ago....waited (6) and got a packet full of info including health record history.

I am trying to find my grandfathers book. I have a picture of a cover from one that he was in. It's dark green and Must've been from sometime in the 50's. It says "Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island SC Fifth Battalion Platoons 54, 58, 62" His name was John Henry Gilroy. Please let me know if you have anything matching this. Your help is much appreciated.

I would say to try Leatherneck Magazine and place and add saying your looking for that book with the complete details that you gave me and see if they can help you better.

I believe it’s 3004. He thought it was 3009/3007 but those weren’t it. I also know it’s not 3006.

He was 3rd battalion Mike Co Jan 2006 he had Gunny Wyble (sp?) Sgt Surbur(er?) and Sgt Marie. His best friend graduated at the same time and he believes it was 3004.

I graduated 24 March 1975 from Parris Island SC platoon

2019 2nd Recruit BN MCRD Parris Island SC

I lost all my yearbooks and pictures in a fire, I was able to get my platoon picture from Parris Island but have been searching for a copy of my platoon yearbook for over 40 years whiteout any luck.

I've search every online resource, my only luck might be someone who has collected them or maybe a member or family member who has an extra copy.

I'm sorry I don't have that Book but it you go to ebay or amazon and search for you platoon book from Parris Island use your platoon number on both amazon and ebay and it will bring up a bunch of platoon books but I can't guaranty yours will in their ..

Welcome and good morning, We have tempter of 31º and we can see 58º for the high. I'm looking forward for today. I have a Fellow Marine who will take over my job of searching and giving back to our fellow Marines their Platoon Books for free, as I have done for 15 years.. This is a memorial even as I pass off the torch to another in the tradition that holds up so dearly in my pride and joy. As long as I have done this, I have always felt pride when I gave back someone's book to them. Have a great day all of you and Semper Fi.
