Hey. I cant get back into the Marine Corps as I went to the army trying to go SF and now Ive racked up almost 8 years in. Made Sergeant even with a deleted mos! But I got busted down to lance corporal from corporal in the Corps right before I got out. The Corps doesnt look at the army rank, just the rank in the Corps and lo and behold, at nearly 8 years and e-3 is a no go. So now(implemented this year!) even in the army there are complications like this but Im still working through it. I really liked the guys in the Corps in this mos (2621) but in the army its not the same. Some are great but a lot don't even conduct themself like they are in the military unless they are filling out paperwork to burn you. Definately not the sort to handle it at a squad or platoon level and forget it.
What Ive seen though is that the culture that I like is in the combat arms MOSs. I got along better with infantry guys and guys who served with the 75th and 82nd and the like. At SFAS me being 5'3" I just couldnt ruck fast enough and I became despondent.

So I was thinking of enlisting as an 11bang bang and trying out again for SF or Ranger if I can go active which is sketchy right now because of the army just this year implementing the 8 year cut off at e-5 which I made but would loose coming back in because of my time out.

Does this sound stupid? I mean I always see grunts going Intel but never the other way around heheh. I like doin intel stuff a lot, but I was a 300 pfter in the army and I really take the rifleman side of things seriously because I like it and would shoot on my own and research ttps. Would this be a waste of the supposed smarts? heheh. Big emphasis on supposed; but seriously would it be a waste after the experience and training?

This is just me thinking and wondering if its a good idea or perhaps a bit misplaced and would appreciate input from any Marines or especially anyone who has done one or both.

Thanks

Be careful what you wish for. Maybe there is a reason you never see intel guys going infantry. Just a thought.<script type="text/javascript" src="safari-extension://com.ebay.safari.myebaymanager-QYHMMGCMJR/71f6af2c/background/helpers/prefilterHelper.js"></script>

The USMC is not taking retreads (they're only interested in high school seniors). Do you even know if the Army would let you reenlist (regardless of the MOS)? Have you talked to an Army Prior Service Recruiter yet to see if this is even plausible (no sense in even thinking about this if you're not getting back in).

Well yeah, thats kind of why Im asking seeing no reference to it on the interwebs... I figure maybe one or two guys have tried it. Maybe the grunts are like "Ive had enough of that ****.." and the intel guys are like " F--- that ****!"

Just trying to get some 411.

Im looking into that right now. Before I was a critical mos, now there are complications because of the time to grade requirment, seeing if I can keep the rank or if Ill have to get knocked down. If I can keep it Im good, if not then Ill have to look at switching mos maybe and the 11b 40 option, or 18x would be something in which I could look at and pick the Sgt rank back up again, and if that somehow falls through I can at least go into the nasty guard as whatever.

Im also talking to the Navy recruiter and hes been the most helpful, but no active positions for ps.

11 Bang Bang? Did you eat paint chips as a kid or something? Whats next you going to start walking around calling people Sarge and Battle like the Army does? If the Army will let you re-enlist i suggest staying with them.

Hey crucible "marine", this wasnt really meant for know nothing ****sticks like yourself who were not even in elementary school when I was a Marine. Having spending a WHOPPING 3 YEARS in the military and this obvious plethora of knowledge you've gained from all this time dealing with various branches of service and multiple units, its obvious that you are suited to advise someone like myself who was in while your mother was literally wiping your ass. From the tone you show to guys who come before you maybe I would be better off in the army cause you sure as hell don't act any different from them. Oh and as far as paint chips go, I could eat 10 bags and my GT score would still rape yours. Cryptological dudes are kinda endowed in that region you ignoramus. Spend another enlistment or something, go snatch up some HVTs on TST missions because you have an SF asset handed off to you, get some discipline and experience and then come back and talk to me. Obama's kind of "marine" right here.

Make yourself useful and go draw fire you ***** adolescent. Oh and one more thing....

Go-****-yourself!!!

Unless you have access to something Idon't, I saw that the Retention Control Point for Sergeant is 14 years. Eight years is for Specialist. Depending on how long you've been out, whatyour RE-code is, and what your MOS was, will affect your chances of gettingback in.

I did two hitches in the Marine Corps, 78-81,and 82-84. I got out as a Sergeant. I was commo. When I joined the Army, I was given only 5 MOSsto choose from since I was Prior Service. I don't remember all of them but three were: Smoke Specialist (which merged with NBC),Truck Driver (88M), and Personnel Admin Specialist/Airborne. I took the Admin job since I would have to goto jump school. I was reduced in rank toPFC/E-3, and allowed only a 4-year contract. I know the pressure of having to make rank because of Retention ControlPoint hanging over your head. I demandedguaranteed assignment to 82d Airborne Division and that was added to mycontract. No use going to jump school ifI am not going to use it. Times weredifferent then, so at the end of my 4-years, when I re-enlisted to go toGermany, I was promoted to Staff Sergeant.

Seeing how the Army spent money on you tobe Crypto, I don’t see you getting a chance to change your MOS. That is why you will have to see a Recruiter, but you know, the MOSs change due to other people enlisting, re-enlisting,lateral moves, etc. If you did not havea chance to attend jump school in your MOS, it is getting more difficult now. I work in S-1 at an Army hospital, and I can’tget it for active duty Soldiers unless they are going to an Airborne unit. The best “NO” I received was a SSG who waspromoted to Sergeant First Class. He wasgood to go until he was promoted to SFC, then it was denied.

Whatever service you get into now, stayuntil retirement.

Oh crap maybe I have been eating too many paint chips or something.
I thought I had read that it was 8 year for SGT now, and I think that is what the recruiter thought and is what he told me. I double checked from a few sources and it appears You are right sir. 14 years for Sgt, 8 years for Spec4. Thing that is tricky, my mos technically is 35p crypto linguist, only thing is Im NOT a linguist. The army only sends their people (or used to ) to the morse intercept school at huachuca and that was their mos. Everybody else then sends their folk to Pensacola Fl to Cory station for the crypto school, which is what I did being a 2621 in the Corps. The Army deleted the morse mos while I was in. We were instructed to reclass from Chief of Staff. I got sent to Iraq instead. They ended up using our former mos designator and changing it to 35p. Id gladly go analyst as thats pretty much what I did for the most part anyway, or if they want to send me to DLI, hell yeah... If the 35p designator gets me in then cool beans. Deal with the language after Im in heheh. I am Re-1.

They have 18x positions open for prior service(I think). If I could not get through SFAS the second try because Im too old or too short to hump fast, under the contract I think Id default to 11b, if I could not come back as Intel, so this is another reason I was looking at infantry.

Thank you for the well informed post! S/F
