My current MOS is horrible, not rewarding, and not challenging. If I am to stay in past my current contract I will have to have lat moved. I'm looking at 26XX Crypto Linguist lately as something I'd be very interested in. Is anyone here currently serving in this area that can give me some basics of what I would have to look forward to? Anything from daily activities to schooling info to future retention outlook (promotion competition etc). Thanks.

Also, I have read many other similar threads on this but many of them are dated. I was hoping for a fresh set of answers as things tend to change in this organization. Plus I can ask questions directly to those of you who respond without reviving 4yr old posts.

Have you talked to your Career Planner yet?

Lat moves are very tricky and a lot of stars must align perfectly in order for you to be even eligible to request one. Namely, they will not let you out of your current PMOS if it is underpopulated (letting you go will only make it even more so). On the other side of the coin, if the 26XX field is overpopulated, they are not going to add anymore bodies to it. You'll also need the GT score required for 26XX and any security clearance. To be a linguist, one must also pass the DLAB (language aptitude) test. I would imagine that goes for Crypto Linguist as well.

Your Career Planner can answer these questions for you. Good luck.

Top, i have discussed this with me career planner. His best advice was to submit the package and hope for the best. I have all the prereqs for the MOS (except the TS, i have S) and am retaking the DLAB to better my score which was previously a 107. If i cant lat move i wont re-up so im swinging for the fences here. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds good Devil. I was a Bn Career Planner for a couple years. As mentioned, Lat Moves is one of the tools the manpower folks use to balance MOS fields. Majority of the time, it's used as as reenlistment incentive. So, your best bet of getting it approved is while you're trying to re-up.

The USMC is offering reenlistment bonuses in these intel MOS's for FY2016. Meaning, they need bodies. Just in case you're interested and can qualify:

0211 Counterintelligence/human intelligence specialist $56,000 Sgt

0689 Cyber security technician $56,000 Sgt

0651 Cyber network operator $30,750 Sgt

0681 Information security technician $25,500 Sgt

0241 Imagery analysis specialist $20,500 Sgt

Come back and let us know how this works out for you. Your thread will become a "Similar Thread" for future reference and may help someone else.

I hear a lot of those guys become severe alcoholics. the course isnt easy and its like a year and a half long. If you get promoted while at the school house if you fail out you revert to your previous rank aswell.
