I was in 1960-1966, and recall that we kept our M1s in the wall locker (I was in FMF Kaneohe Bay Hawaii), does any one know when it changed that rifles were not kept in the barracks.

Thanks

I don't know when it changed, but I was in 1963-1967 and at Camp Lejeune (October 1964 to October 1965) we kept our M-14s in the open squad bay type barracks there, Comm Co, Hq Bn. They were in a series of racks in the middle of the open squad bay.

In fact, see photo above, this was one unauthorized use of those rifles we had nearby, the solemn ceremony called Burying The Bottle.

No empty whiskey bottle was just disrespectfully thrown in the trash can. It was given full honors.

Notice the irreverent left-handed salute by the Marine in the background.

Came back from Nam 1970 and stationed at MCAS Beaufort SC, our M-14's were kept at the armory down the street from our barracks.
