Lexington Marine praised for his service in Iraq

01/03/04

Lexington resident Betty Carson beams with pride.

Her grandson, Marine Sgt. Terry Carson, has just returned safely from Iraq with a letter of commendation from his commanding officer.

Terry, who grew up in Lexington, is stationed at the Cherry Point Marine Depot in North Carolina. He and his wife Dionne have three children, son Tyler, 4, and daughters Taylor, 3, and Tiffany, 2, and make their home in the Red Bank area.

Carson‘s commanding officer, Lt. Col. John Torres, wrote his parents, Sandra and Winfred Carson of Lexington, to express his gratitude for their son’s contributions to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 264.

“The success of the Black Knights would not have been possible without the exceptional efforts of Terry in the Airframes Division,” he wrote, “frequently working long hours in a demanding environment.”

His squadron conducted combat operations in northern Iraq, a mission off the coast of eastern Africa and a humanitarian mission in the Liberian crisis.

“It is the hard work, total dedication, and commitment of Terry that maintains the legacy of the Marine Corps. I am very proud of his meritorious promotion to the rank of sergeant.”
