I scored a 34 on the ASVAB but scored well on the Mechanical and General tech parts is that good or bad?

Well, it ain't great, but the Mechanical and GT score should help you out. If it were me, I would request to retake the ASVAB to get a better score. With a higher score you might get jobs you would not be eligible for with a lower score.
But if you're satisfied with a 34 and you get a job you could enjoy doing than by all means lock that puppy in. But ultimately, it's up to you.

The highest requirement scores are either 110 or 115 I believe. Requirements start at 85 though, so you should be able to find something out there that interests you. Good luck to you.

Yeah, those puzzle shapes were really simple though, kind of like free questions, just had to make sure you chose the one with the shapes all exactly the same.

On with it then friend! Getting used to it for boot camp eh? As for me I got an 83 (I didn't try on it because I never thought I'd go into the military) and my MOS is legal admin though I wanted a combat MOS, I cannot because I am female.

I guess many of us were. I read on another site that 75% of all dep enlistees are open. I have no idea what will happen now and I am sort of concerned. My big question is what happens if I don't get one of my chosen Mos's by ship date?

AlexJH
04-05-11, 04:56 PM
Oh nevermind bro, I thought you choose program code OO which is open contract, my bad. No, all poolees sign an open DEP contract, that one has nothing to do with your job, it enlists you basically into the IRR until you leave for boot camp.

No offense bro but do you even qualify for intel with a 68 on the asvab? With how many people are trying to get in the marines they can be picky, which I sadly think they will just overlook you because of it.

I think it's a 100 GT for Intel, 68 isn't a bad score bro. You can get much worse.

My GT is like a 114 and I scored a 78... guys with 72's have higher GT's than me in some cases, he should be fine.

+1 on that I scored a 69 without studying and ive been out of school since 2002 My lowest line score wasa CL at 109 and I qualified for every MOS
My MM was like 137 and GT was 119.

Many people on this forum post that they got like 26's and such so i wouldnt complain about a 69

@ Jacob, you will probably be put into whatever is open.

I spoke with my recruiter yesterday. He said that if nothing opens up by 30 days out we will need to sit down and go over the open jobs list and fill out my contract. He said my line scores were what mattered and that they more than qualified me for intelligence. He mentioned that it is the amount of time that you are waiting not how high the score is. If two recruits both wanted a job and were both qualified it boils down to who has been in the longest not who has the highest score.

With open contract you go in just as open contract, and at the END of bootcamp they give you an MOS. That's what happened to a buddy of mine. he chose open contract because he really didn't care what job he got. landed in tanks. enjoys it now

Also depends on availability based on time slot. I was offered an Infantry contract two weeks after swearing into the DEP while most poolees were waiting until October without a contract simply because another kid dropped out and we were in the same time slot for a boot camp date.

It's all good until you have to combine all 3-4 grammar concepts with no warning, you get to hear the possible answers one.

I can't say anything but to tell you see what is out there on the internet. I didn't and I believe that I could have done much better if I had researched some.

shawnkelly
04-10-11, 06:36 AM
yeah, I've looked around a little to see what kind of study type of **** that is out there, and some of it was easy, some of it was hard as sh*t. The navy had some sort of a practice test that I ran into, that was a joke. But there was this linguist challenge website... and it progressively got more and more impossible. -looked like chicken scratch to me...

AmericanIdol
04-10-11, 06:41 AM
DLAB is no frikin' joke. I did my fair share of research on it when I was looking into Cryptologic Linguist. I passed the "challenge" test, but that's going to be nothing compared to the real deal. And besides, I just wanted to be infantry.

shawnkelly

I'm going 02xx/26xx, not 267x, so there's no real incentive for myself to pass. They just want to see if they can train you to become a linguist after your primary schooling, which I have no interest in doing. It's just a pre-req for intel, we DD contracts didn't need to pass it, which i didn't, I scored a 90.

Just wondering how ya'll did on the ASVAB and what you plain on going into. I'm going Infantry and am also going to be a Scout Sniper, I scored a 73 on the ASVAB.

With all do and sorry if someone has already brought this up (didn't have the urge to read though 51 pages.) Im pretty sure you don't choose what you do within yor MOS field...and im 100% sure within the 03 field to even start sniper school to become 0317 you have to qualify on the firing range at MCRD. But all and all I wanna be a scout sniper too! Good luck man and nice score!:D

Crazy as this sounds, I am also 6'3" and I got it. I could be wrong but that should not restrict you from aircrew, and the only pilots with restrictions(to my knowledge) is for jets.

I was told that I could not work on the flight deck at my height. I was actually told that at MEPS. I had put my top three down before I left and they said my line score were fine for everything but my height dq me. I also can find any info on being too tall for air/ground. Yes......it is......

In ... that case ...

I got a 78. I wanted to get like a 90, but I didn't get a chance to study at all, I just walked in the office one day to ask about the process because truthfully I wanted to sign the papers the day I turned 18 (on my birthday). And the next day I was taking the test in a weird building with a cannon in the front.

This was right after New Years vacation so uhm .. that didn't help.

Still I'm okay with the score, I hear anything after 75 is nice.

But when people were standing in the halls awaiting their scores, everyone kept talking about how long they had been studying for, some guy got like a 19 the first time and then a 47 the second time and he was told he would have to do it a third time. I didn't have this privilege though. Even if I would've tried to study the night before, it would have done me no justice trying to cram for it.

I don't like putting pressure on myself, or I'm good at removing pressure by belittling things, so when I took the test I was real calm, I noticed a lot of other test takers giving me the weird "wtf" look every time they looked down. And I was laughing while taking the test.

Fun experience for me though, and so was MEPs :)

I scored a 60 when I took it while I was still a senior in high school. Haha. I remember that the mechanics section destroyed me, heck, even some parts of math were tough. Since then I've taken an interest in vehicles and parts and whatnot.

Either way I have an 03xx contract.

ASVAB: 87
GT: 120+

Contract: Reserves - Bulk Fuel Specialist
Ship Date: October 11th, 2011

The contract isn't very important just as long as I am part of the Marine Corps that's all that matters.

Plus I am going Reserves with the intent of applying to PLC - Air while I finish college so I am just looking for a little bit of the enlisted experience and could care less what job I do.

The funny thing about when I took the ASVAB my sophomore year of high school is that it was on paper, and I put down the wrong test book number. So, I received a 3. They were really skeptical when I took the test at MEPS and had a score of 89, GT over 120 and pretty nice line scores.

Either way, I plan on doing Infantry to get to 0321. But my end result is 0317, and if by some chance I can't make 0321, I can still get the Scout Sniper slot.

Your recruiter didn't give you a job?

You sign an SOU at the RSS level, you'll see the contract the next time you go to MEPS before you ship.

TheOtherGuy
08-01-11, 03:38 PM
Oh, I didn't pick 0321 or 0317. I'm pretty sure my first choice was 03XX. Should I get them changed to specific things, or would that even matter since I haven't shipped out yet.

PNW2011
08-01-11, 08:43 PM
Well, if don't know what your jerb is right now, then you don't have one yet...

TheOtherGuy
08-01-11, 11:20 PM
Well I was sat down after MEPS to pick out three choices from a list in an information booklet. Most of them just listed the difference between the 03XX, 04XX, 05XX, etc. I chose Infantry, Artillery, and EOD. And I signed the Statement of Understanding before I even went to MEPS. My recruiter said I had until my ship date to change my MOS choices.

I've always felt average at best except with mechanics.
Been working on motorcycles and all my own vehicles all my life.

I Cant remember what my MM score was but I think it was really good because I originally wanted MOS 3521 Motor T mechanic. And When I said that to my recruiter he replied "God damn that would be a waste of your talent", He showed me a few other jobs dealing with mechanic's that I had never heard of and I ended up choosing MOS 1341 Engineer Equipment Mechanic.

Sounds like a good job to me but I'm having a hell of a time finding any info on what its really like. I would like to hear from anyone with info on this MOS.

There is no such thing as an HZ and UZ was phased out two or three years ago VZ is the contract that replaced UZ and it's a 5 year contract with a 5,000 dollar bonus on completion of BRC
And no contract guarantees you going to BRC it only provides you with an opportunity to go to the Indoc and MAYBE get accepted which if you did you would go to MART not BRC

Stupid moment, lol, but: The ASVAB for Dummies 2010 book works wonders for the electrical and mechanical part. And if math or science is your issue, you'll find that it's just as good for that too.
Heck, I studied it for one day (Easy read), and it improved my score on the practice tests by about 10pts.

Actual test was an 83 with all of my other individual scores (GT, etc) were in the low 120s.

Basically I qualified for everything, but went for Infantry. (Couldn't get Intel because of parent's citizenship status).

I did a search for "Understanding ASVAB scores" and this thread's title seemed the best place to ask, if I am mistaken please redirect me!

I had just taken the ASVAB and my AFQT was 69, but individual scores for MM, GT, EL and CL was 118, 123, 109 and 104, respectivly.

Now, I know the AFQT score goes up to 99, so when I saw 69 I thought I scored pretty low, but the recruiter reassures me that I actually qualify for almost every Marine MOS out there. I am not doubting him, but I just dont have any way to gauge my individual scores, or if they're as good as he says why I scored a 69? Just looking for a little clarification, thank you.

That means you are better than average the % is the % of the population. meaning you did better than 69% of the people who took the same test. A score of 99 would mean you did better than 99% of the population seeing as you cant do better than yourself there is no 100%

I think that happens a lot if you either don't know what MOS you want yet or if the one you want isn't open at the time. Should get that figured out soon. I was on an open contract until last week because none of my MOS choices were available. It should be relatively easy to change assuming your choices are open.

ABCs of the ASVAB
Re-Testing

You can’t actually “fail” the ASVAB, but you can “fail” to achieve a high enough AFQT score (http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/afqtscore.htm) to enlist in the service you want. If this happens that means your AFQT score was too low which — in turn means you need to work on one (or more) of four areas: math knowledge skills, arithmetic reasoning skills, reading comprehension skills, and word knowledge skills. These are the four subtests which are used to calculate your AFQT score. Parts II and III of this book are specifically designed to help you improve your scores on these four subtests.

Once you’re sure that you are ready, you can apply (through your recruiter) for a retest.

Minimum Waiting Times
ASVAB tests are valid for two years, as long as you are not in the military. In most cases, once your join the military, your ASVAB scores remain valid as long as you are in. In other words, except in a few cases, you can use your enlistment ASVAB scores to qualify for retraining years later.
After you take an initial ASVAB test (taking the ASVAB in high school does not count as an initial test), you can retake the test after 30 days. After the retest, you must wait at least six months before taking the ASVAB again.

When you retake the ASVAB, it’s not your highest score that counts, but rather the score on your latest test. If you score lower on the retest, that is the score which will be used for your military enlistment.

When you can/cannot re-take the test
The bad news is that you can’t retake the ASVAB on a whim or whenever you simply feel like it. Each of the services has its own rules concerning whether or not they will allow a retest:

Marine Corps: The Marine Corps will authorize a retest if the applicant’s previous test is expired. Otherwise, recruiters can request a retest as long as the retesting is being required because the initial scores (considering the applicant's education, training, and experience) do not appear to reflect his or her true capability. Additionally, the retest cannot be requested solely because the applicants initial test scores did not meet the standards prescribed for specific military job qualification.

You probably don't want to be a linguist. Most linguists I know hate their job, barely speak their language, and are closed out for promotions except... 71s I think. On the other hand all the 21s and 51s I know like their job and have decent promotions(esp the 21s). Sign a DD contract. You will still be sigint. Just a better side of it.

Hi my name is Jared, i scored a 79 when i took the ASVAB. I have been talking to my OSO and we originally set up a PLC-Ground contract, but he said that I could try and take the Flight test and we could switch my Ground contract to an Air contract. Hopefully I can pass the flight test and get into flight school. I leave for my first phase of boot on June 2nd.

Hey there,

I scored a 96 on the ASVAB and signed a crypto linguist contract. Originally, I wanted to do that for the USAF-- (and lied about what I'd actually be doing in this MOS) and so I went and talked to the Marines. Haven't looked back.

My name's Ryan, just joined the site. I scored a 70. Going field 08, field artillery. The Army offered me the same job but the recruiter I had was prety crooked and lied to me, so I walked down the hall into the Marine's office. Best decision I could've made.

Went to MEPS just a few days ago. I scored a 71 on the ASVAB, and due to the location of the RS I was recruited under, I'm not able to get a straight Infantry job for reserves. I plan to go to college at Texas A&M, do the Marine ROTC, and major in Military Science and minor in US History. Until then my MOS is 0621, Field Radio Operator. Still pretty satisfied with that contract so far. But when I get out of college and do all the stuff to be 2nd Lieutenant I'll see what I can do to get my MOS changed to Infantry Officer. I'm excited to see what goes on down the road.
