Saddam gives up guerilla leaders

THE interrogation of Saddam Hussein has yielded more information as the deposed leader starts to reveal names of people inside Iraq who were carrying out attacks against US forces.

Ahmed al-Bayak, a member of the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, said he was informed by council members that Saddam had provided details of people involved in violent insurgency and guerilla attacks.

Another council member said Saddam has acknowledged sending $US40 billion ($53.95 billion) abroad. Saddam had also provided the names of people who know where the money is, according to newspaper reports quoting council member Iyad Allawi.

The US-appointed council is now searching for the money deposited in Switzerland, Japan, Germany and other countries, Mr Allawi told the London-based Arab newspapers, Al-Hayat and Asharq al-Awsat.

"Saddam has started to give information on money that has been looted from Iraq and deposited abroad," Mr Allawi said.

"Investigation is now concentrated on his relationship with terrorist organisations and on the money paid to elements outside Iraq.

"We have asked international legal and specialised companies to follow up the money he has deposited in Switzerland, Germany, Japan and other countries which is estimated at around $US40 billion under fictitious companies' names."

The US State Department was helping search for the Saddam money, spokesman Adam Ereli said. Some funds had already been found in Syrian bank accounts.

"The money that was stolen from the Iraqi people by the former regime will be returned to the Iraqi people," Mr Ereli said.

Anti-coalition violence continued yesterday. Rebels detonated a roadside bomb in central Baghdad as a US convoy drove by a densely populated residential area, killing one Iraqi and wounding another, police said.

No US troops were injured.

US-led forces in Iraq have detained five men suspected of taking part in the Karbala assault which left 19 dead on Saturday.

The arrests came as US troops killed three suspects linked to the militant Ansar al-Islam group in a gun battle in Mosul in northern Iraq yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria's Defence Minister Nikolai Svinarov visited Bulgarian soldiers serving in Karbala and was expected to return to Sofia last night with the bodies of five men slain in Saturday's attacks.

These were the first casualties suffered by Bulgaria in Iraq since contributing forces in September to a 9000-strong Polish-led multinational contingent.

Two Thais were among those killed, prompting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to say yesterday that Bangkok was considering sending a combat unit to provide security for its 440 troops posted in Iraq on a humanitarian mission.

I love the irony of the "Lion of Islam" squealing.
Save more of our troops - squeal away Saddam!
