Robert Leckie wrote several books.

One of them is probably one of the 10 or so best books I've ever read.

Strong Men Armed: The United States Marines Against Japan.

I think I will try to find it after I finish the book I am reading now.

What's stunning about it, Bill, is that it is interspersed throughout with vignettes of tremendous heroism among Marines, woven into the general narrative.
This is what makes it what I would call a "stunning" book.

Great recommendation. Will definitely put on my reading list. Helmet for My Pillow another good read.

It sure is, Frank, same author, too-----he has one, also, that is just about Guadalcanal.
He even wrote a book about George Washington and the American Revolution.

High ratings for all these books from amazon.com customers.

A friend of mine found a 10 cent paperback at a yard sale and gave to me because the title is "Danger! Marines at Work". I was written by Robert G. Fuller and is actually a fictional comedy about the First Parachute Battalion in WWII. I am reading it now and finding it to be a fair book. Would have made a nice war comedy like many back in the 50s and 60s.

Lots of books to choose from, more nowadays than ever, probably, Bill.
I read one thing after another, regular pace, no speed reading.
Probably 50 or so each year. Starting in 2000 I typed one sheet of paper with the titles of books I read, in order----can go back and see what I gravitate towards the most, and it helps me notice that I have completely ignored a certain genre or category of subject matter-----------so the lists come in mighty handy.
