Today's Veteran of the Day is Tom Jones Jr. Tom served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943-1945 as a Navajo Code Talker. He was attached to 3rd Division, Unit 297 Navajo Code Talkers 767 and the Navajo Code Talkers 642 platoons based at Camp Pendleton, California.
Marines, ever wonder where the Marine Corps vocabulary terms such as "ink-stick" (pen) or "gofasters" (running shoes) originated? Some terms, concepts, tactics and instruments of modern warfare were given uniquely formal descriptive nomenclatures in Navajo (the word for "potato" being used to refer to a hand grenade for example).
Tom died on Monday at the age of 89. We honor his service. #SemperFi
