Updated: 6:56 a.m. ET Dec. 14, 2003BAGHDAD, Iraq - Prime Minister Tony Blair confirmed Sunday that deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had been captured alive in Iraq, saying in a statement that Saddam was apprehended Saturday night.

The seizure of Saddam also was confirmed by the Iraqi Governing Council and the U.S. military scheduled a “very important” news conference for 7 am ET,

"I very much welcome the capture last night of Saddam Hussein," Blair said in a statement released by his office. "This is very good news for the people of Iraq. It removes

the shadow that has been hanging over them for too long of the nightmare of a return to the Saddam regime."

"This fear is now removed," the statement continued. "It also gives an opportunity for Saddam to be tried in Iraqi courts for his crimes against the Iraqi people. We should try now to unite the whole of Iraq in rebuilding the country and offering it a new future."

Blair added, "I pay tribute to the work of the coalition intelligence and military forces in capturing him."

The prime minister faced substantial domestic opposition for his decision to commit British troops to the Iraq war and is sure to get a major political boost from the reported capture.

U.S. details
In the United States, a U.S. official told NBC News that the military believed that Saddam has been captured although it is awaiting DNA confirmation. The deposed Iraqi leader was apparently hidding in the cellar of a house in Tikrit, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Separately, a U.S. official told the Associated Press that the captured man's appearance did not immediately look like Saddam, but additional efforts to ascertain his identity indicated he was the former leader.

The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity.

Dara Noor al-Din, a member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council, told The Associated Press that the council was informed of the former dictator's capture in a telephone call from L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator for Iraq.

"Bremer has confirmed to the Governing Council that Saddam was captured in Tikrit," Noor al-Din said. "He spoke on the phone to several members, including Ahmad Chalabi."

Chalabi is a leading member of the council who has close links to the U.S. administration of President George W. Bush.

Another Governing Council member, Jalal Talabani, was earlier quoted by Iran's official news agency, IRNA, as saying Saddam had been captured in Tikrit. Talabani is currently traveling in Spain.

Rumors in Kirkuk
Earlier in the day, rumors of the capture sent people streaming into the streets of Kirkuk, a northern Iraqi city, firing guns in the air in celebration.

"We are celebrating like it's a wedding," said Kirkuk resident Mustapha Sheriff. "We are finally rid of that criminal."

"This is the joy of a lifetime," said Ali Al-Bashiri, another resident. "I am speaking on behalf of all the people that suffered under his rule."

Well, the Iraqi people can start to truly believe! Maybe start to have a real hope of a new beginning!

It will be interesting in the days to come, just what everybody's 'take' on this will be.

Let the political tango begin.

I'm not trying to second guess the psyops people, however:

I think it would have been more effective had he NOT been clean shaven and given a haircut. He should have been paraded before the media exactly as he was found, a pathetic wild man caught while hiding in an underground cave.

THEN, when the most fanatic of his followers were denying that it was indeed him, a delegation of them should have been invited to give him a shave and a haircut on live tv.

They should have called in Geraldo Rivera as technical director. He would have whipped up excitement and expectations to rival the opening of Al Capone's hidden room.

"Is it, or isn't it? The whole world is waiting and watching!". It could have had a bigger viewing audience than the Super Bowl.

The advertising revenue would have been enough to pay for the entire war.

The sale of t-shirts and coffee mugs would have had the chinese factories working on 24 hour shifts to meet the world-wide demand.

and at least for the short haul, we would have reduced our unemployment rate by a minimum of 2 percentage points.

The way this opportunity was overlooked, the Democrats can never again accuse Bush of looking out for big business. He blew it, big time, this time.

Wow, 1st Sgt, your gears are spinning, aren't they!

I think your 'proposal' should be submitted to to the media, maybe they'd run with it!

I like the comments Saddam made in regard to the cheering crowds outside (I guess he could hear them, I suppose?) "they are mobs", and the people in mass graves "they were thieves".

He needs to fire his writer, for starters.

FirstSgtMike,

In addition to letting him meet the press in the same state/condition he was found, I think we should escort the media pool to his "bunker." Let the world know how he was forced to live while the coalition forces hunted him down and fearful that the reward money would encourage his own people to provide information to assist in his capture or killing. Actually, I am glad he was found alive. The proof of his capture is undeniable. The fact that his is still breathing is credit to our force and the President's promise to bring a tyrant to justice. Killing him would have been more of a headache that this.

THEY BLEW IT, BIG TIME!

I was afraid it would happen when I heard the initial reports of his capture. The follow-up reports confirmed it, and future reports will merely offer additional details following the natural chain of events.
===================================

"Saddam did not put up a fight; he did not try to take his own life (though he had a pistol). He was "talkative" and "cooperative," resigned, cowering, meek and weak."

Inside a six-foot-deep hole was a dirty, disheveled man with a matted beard. He was lying flat, in a crawl space six feet by eight feet.

Saddam was later described as resigned and submissive, bewildered and disoriented. He apparently bumped his head as he was pulled out of the hole. "Tired, he was a tired man, and also a man resigned to his fate."

Saddam was bricked into his hiding place, he added. “They couldn’t get him out at first and had to dig, from either side of the hole,” said the official. The soldiers finally made a large enough passageway to drag him out. When he came out, he looked bedraggled, said the official: “He looked like a homeless man at the bus station.”
=====================================

Instead of keeping him "talkative" and "cooperative," resigned, cowering, meek and weak", somebody decided it was best to clean him up, shower, shave, and haircut to give him back his "dignity".

Now they are wondering why he refuses to answer questions and provide information and answers.

I wonder if they refer to him as "Mr. President" and provide an Honor Guard as they move him from place to place. Following his "rescue", and a short recouperation period, will there be a parade in his honor?

The most productive time in an interrogation is when the subject is demoralized, disoriented, resigned, cowering, meek and weak.

THEY BLEW IT! BIG TIME!

I'm a winger, but I would suppose they blew their 'window of opportunity' as well.

Hopefully, it doesn't get any additional friendlies killed.

"DEATH PENALTY?" NO!!! Build a bomb proof, bullet proof, glass container in the middle of Bag Dad square. Show everything, 'cept S******er.....use air-conditioner, so he won't die from heat stroke/exhaustion.....Use an Iragi citizen with whip, who lost loved ones, or was tortured himself, and gather big chunks of concrete, give him a sledge hammer. "NOW, MR. BIG SHOT, MAKE LIL' ROCKS OUT OF THESE BIG 'UN'S. This is what I'd do......for his punishment....So the entire "TERRORIST WORLD" could see what they got comin' when we get them, like the USAMA/OSAMA, Bin Ladin.....maybe other's. "I WANT TO KNOW THE SOLDIER'S NAME THAT FIRST CAUGHT HIM?" And from a Marine who crawled into holes, a big "ATTABOY" goes out from me to the 4ID. "WAY TO GO, YA'LL DESERVE THE HIGHEST AWARD THE ARMY CAN GIVE YOU." One thing that gripes me.....The press....They talk to the Gen's/high rankin' dudes, who just stayed in the rear with the gear, and they apparently won't let the "ENLISTED PEONS" in their eyes, do some interviews. I think this is so wrong. The Gen's/big shots, didn't do s*****...It was the men/women of the 4th ID who got the SOB., so let's talk to them!!!! It's always the big shots who get the time, and praise. Makes me mad.  :thumbdown
