During my junior year at Clemson University - February 1969, I was drafted and sent to Fort Jackson in Columbia SC. The Army said they weren't going to induct me because my eyes were too weak - One of every 20 draftees were being inducted to the Corps. A 7 foot 400 pound bald headed gunny with a chisled stone face dressed in his recruiter blues said "that didn't mean anything to the Corps" - "we'll point you in the right direction and you just pull the trigger". We left Columbia for the short drive to PI about midnight arriving at the yellow footsteps about 2 AM. The bus door opened and the Devil's bastard child introduced himself. So it began for me in platoon 226 that cold February night.

We were stripped and given a pair of skivvies - marked on our left sholders with a black magic marker (226) and the rebirth began -

So much to tell - I'll continue

Pussy's, DI's replaced? Get a grip. If the maggots wanted to be treated like sissy's they should have joined the Army Dogs.
That's the reason I got out in 72 because you couldn't discipline anyone except with a smile.
I even had some moms call there Congressman on me because of what I did to some maggots while inspection of my platoon.
Not at all like the Corps I sign to join
Hell I got knocked around by three DI's at one time but I didn't say anything. I was talking going down the ladder-well going to formation.
I didn't do that anymore.
I didn't mind, I just thought it was part of PI training. Taught me a lesson.
We also did several blanket parties on some ass holes.

I enlisted in 1952 and went to USMCSD. It was told to us recruits That we had to
follow orders. No one in Korea wanted someone who could not do so. Their life
depended on it. If you did as you were told it was OK, if you didn't you got kicked,
punched and a few other things done to you. I know because I looked up the 1st.
week at a plane passing over the parade field and got whacked with my rifle at rightshoulder arms. One dude got caught smoking and had to put his bucked over his head and smoke. We learned to take orders and didn't dare not to. Wouldn't trade that experience for all gold in the world. RoyTBowDoe

You said it Roy,
We had one of the recruits in my platoon at the rifle range forget to put his cartage key between the bolt and the action to show the rifle was clear and safe.
Our DI took the recruits M-14 and cocked it on his scalp several times and the blood ran down his cheeks. He never forgot again and we didn't either.

There were so many games played in platoon 226 - spring of 69 at the Island. The DI's always had a reason for special activities after a day of training - there was always a maggot that didn't do it right - did any ever play jute box?
One side of the squad bay were the letters, and the other were the numbers. The biggest screw-up maggot was the reject button.
SDI would chose a letter and number - DI's would punch the buttons - we had to sing - he never liked the song so - the reject button was PUNCHED !!

We learned quicky - "SIR YES SIR" and did what ever it took!

Redman and DocGreek aka Buddy and John (Thanks to you too Bob)

I've included the message I sent to Bob FYI. To answer a couple of your questions I didn't point out in the message to Bob - I recieved orders for CAG in DaNang but was pulled and sent to special services support at Camp Horn - across the river from the Air Force base in DaNang. Worked with that group until Major General George Bowman needed a driver and staff member - I was transferred to LtGen McKutcheson (Commanding General I Corps) and General Bowman's (Deputy Commanding General I Corps) staff until Gen. Bowman rotated back to command Camp Pendleton. I transferred from Camp Horn to a base just north of DaNang working with classified documents. I was drafted for a 2 year hitch out of Clemson University so I qualified for an early release called a "college cut" in time for the Spring semester of 1971. I reached each rank by having my "ass and head wired together" and a high degree of motivation and dedication to the Corps. Never had it questioned !!

MOS was 0311 and damn proud of it!

Sgt DS'ville

Sure Bob - I was drafted 12 Feb 69 - boot camp at the Island at that time was 13 weeks, guess because of the nature of the USMC need in WestPac. I was promoted to PFC out of boot camp and headed to AIT at Camp Geiger. Was placed on an OCS hold as I was told by our Lt because I had an IQ with 3 numbers and a little college. The Commandant sent West Pac orders out for an 0311 Lance Corporal or below and I was the only one available. Left for jungle warfare school Camp Pendleton in December 69 as E-3. Landed in DaNang for assignment and made E-4 some time in the spring of 70. My DD 214 shows my date of rank E-5 as 17 Sept 70. I was in service from Feb 69 to Nov 70 - that's not nine months -

<LI class=floatcontainer id=vmessage6111>Don't take it personal. We tend to guard this site like a pack of pitbulls. Can't and won't tollerate posers, or wannabes. That's why we get so insistant about filled out profiles. We have enough Marines who have knowledge of just about all aspects of the Marine Corps that we can usually expose fakes. Dear Sheila,

Time flies, doesn't it. I'm on the "island" at least twice a week to shop or go to church. Don't know what your barracks were like back then in 4th. RTB. They are now fairly new and across from the DI School. At the end of 1963 when I arrived, I was assigned to 3rdRTB and the barracks were almost brand new. It took several years for the old wooden barracks in 1st and 2ndRTB to get torn down and replaced with concrete and brick buildings. 5thRTB came into being last year out near the rifle range. First major change since the Viet Nam era.

Sheila Hays
04-21-09, 09:06 PM
We were in the old wooden barracks. Went thru a hurricane down there, we slept in the upper deck. I ate C-rations, they were awful, they were in dark green cans. The windows in the barracks were all swollen and the front doors. I had a night duty with my trusty flashlight. Lo and behold, a sailor was drunk and broke into our barracks, he wanted to call his ship. He wanted me to go up to the upper deck, and wake up the NCO who was on duty. I know I was supposed to whack him with my trusty flashlight. I believe we had 8 Squadbays full of recruits. There was no way I was going to wake up the NCO. I told him he had to leave, which he eventually did. I just remember saying to him, (Sir, you are going to have to leave, sir) He was so drunk. After he left, I went up to the upper deck where another recruit was on duty, she woke up the NCO, and we had MP's there in no time. I gave them my story, I couldn't tell them what he looked like. I was still shaking because he came up behind me. I didn't even wet my pants. Semper Fi Sheila Hays

Anyways I was one of the last to do the full 13 week boot camp. pretty damn proud of that and I've seen the reaper again since they shaved it down too..cause i was in ITB right after they did it. It's a shame. God Bless Chesty

Went back to DI school at PI, class 4-95 but broke a knee cap and got dropped about 6 weeks in. Wish I had gone back but never did. Retired as a MSgt in 2006 but would come back on as a Gy if they would just let me go back to PI and be a hat. Redman1, I can't remember which thing I replied to, probably the frogs. I went to boot camp at Parris Island S.C., what a shocker that was. I'm from Massachusetts, and here I was in S.C., no-one showed up for quite a while, so we had time for breakfast. Eventually two MP's came along, lined us up and we got on a bus. We met our DI's in Parris Island, I was now a member of Platoon 13A, I had four DI's. I forgot about SSgt Smith, he was the only male species we saw for quite a time. GySgt.Sabourin, Sgt.Lucas and Cpl. Gonzales, how lucky was I. Graduated on Oct.23rd. 1959, don't even think I was getting off that Island. I had four weeks schooling, Office Procedures Course. What is so funny was my recruiter wrote me a letter, she was wondering if she forgot to tell me a lot about bootcamp. Well duh, I was in my third week of bootcamp. Her name was Marjorie, she was a nice person. Yes, I don't think Big Al did that, saying he didn't want me for a friend. Semper Fi Sheila Hays:usmc:

I'm looking for my graduation book so if anyone was in my platoon and has a extra copy please contact me.

Sorry, I can't help you but I was just thinking about 24 March 1975 because I arrived at Parris Island on 2 April 1975 (Platoon 239). Behr would end up as Senior after Stebinski came and went. Plus, we had Gibb's and my good buddy Eggleston. Anyone know where Hightower might be. He just happened to be the long blond haired guy that was standing next to me on night one.

Well now that I have been around the site a bit wanted to add a bit.

Plt 1104 Sep 74 Dec 74

Went to boot San Diego, recruiter said I had my choice, dear old dad went to Hollywood back in the 50's so I wanted to go there too. Also the only Lt. Col I see on the site "captcouv" and I went to boot together on the buddy program. Funny thing, after boot never saw him again, in the corps or out...some buddy program. We live in the same town now, we will see each other soon.

Pop's was a Corporal (E3) that's right E3 in he old Corps, Korea vet. He didn't admit I out ranked him until I made Sgt, never could make him admit a Lance Corporal in 75 was the same rank as a Corporal in 50.

Nephew is a Marine too, went to Iraq, drove Ollie North around while he was reporting for Fox, now that is a Marine's Marine too.

Anyway, Semper Fi Marines.

Boot Camp June 1979 San Diego, Platoon 1040, DI's- SGT Auburn, CPL Creighton, Senior DI- Gunny Santos. 3rd phase we had SGT Ruweedle, mean MF, and new Senior DI. I have to pull my grad book out of the attic to get the spelling and Senior's name in 3rd phase. The most grulling affect for me was I was never fired as a Squad Leader from day 1 / T-1, and paid dearly for 4th sqaud mistakes all thru boot. Also, the Guide was never fired, his name was Curry. However, it made me a better person and I remember all that happened as if it was yesterday. My son is now a SSGT in the Security Element Group. When he went to boot in San diego, he told me that MT Mother F..... is no longer a requirement. They simply pass by it and the DI's tell stories of PVT's dying on the MT. Things have really changed. I remember doing everything in 72 days, now they go to boot and then back to Pendleton to do the stuff we did in boot in 72 days.
One thing I remember was all the Platoon f...... up and all the squad leaders and guide were marched to the pit and make it rain (bends and thrust, grabbing red dirt on the way up and throwing it in the air). That was after we just ran 7 miles in combat boots (which now they run in tennis shoes) over to the Navy boot camp fence line. Maybe that's why my knees are shot? Sure would like to her from some of the guys, or have a reunion of some kind.

dbombardSR
01-10-10, 08:57 AM
A couple of guys I remember from 79' San Diego Boot in Platoon 1040 is Curry, Talbert, Eloy Hernandez, and one that the DI's really went after was Lamanski. I remember he got dip in the mail and they made him put it all in his moth and PT'd him in the squad bay until he got sick. Also, someone got hoggy bait (cookies) in the mail. The DI's threw them in the trash, but when lights went out, we all went and got them out and ate them. Boy, what great memories. DI CPL Creighton tasked me with stealing yougurt from the chow hall at the range. One day, I forgot to get him a spoon and paid dearly for that occurance too. I believe our Shooting Instructor was SSGT Coward, that was Ironic, just like the Gunny at the Airport putting us on the buss was SSGT Nice. Those were the days. If the Corps would let me, I would volunteer for Afghanistan, since our so called Commander-in-Cheif doesn't have any balls, so Marines are dying while he makes a decision as well as the ROE's in country. A loud speaker saying here we come, so all you bad guys have a chance to run and hide. What the hell? then, all the rest of the bull going on in DC is unbelievable. It makes me want to gather some volunteer ole timer Marines, take our own weapons, and go to Afghanistan to help out these Marines. Even if I have to sit on a ridge with a 50 cal and pluck away to save some Marines.

[quote=dbombardSR;591525]Boot Camp June 1979 San Diego, Platoon 1040, DI's- SGT Auburn, CPL Creighton, Senior DI- Gunny Santos.
Also, wait to see how Obama reacts to all these professional killers coming home to no job and more corruption than in Afghanistan's Government. There's going to be some ****ed off Marines, and you know how that could end.

You went in a few years earlier than I did, but most likely had some of the same type DI's, just coming out of Vietnam. They were some mean MF's. We may have crossed paths a few times, because of all the Duty Stations they were having me check into for cover of another place / in another country they were sending me. stay in touch dbombard@hotmail.com
