Thank you for the kind words. I'd like to share with you some pearls of wisdom from my uncle who passed on at age 96. A few beers made him a great philosopher. He once told me that the secret to a long life was "never, never, never...... stop breathing. I might add that walking also helps. HA!!! God bless you and all our brother Marines. Thank you for your service. Semper Fi......JB33

Sgt Mills was the funniest DI there ever was.

<CENTER>MY NAME IS PARRIS ISLAND"

http://www.wtv-zone.com/swanlover/military/PI_gate2.jpg

If you have been here, you know my name, My name is Parris Island.I was officially started in 1915 and I've seen recruits come and go by the thousands. If you were here when you got here by ferry boat, then you are truly old Corps. All recruits see my main gate only twice, once on the way in and once on the way out.Mostly you come by bus in the middle of the night. Tall, short, fat, skinny, black and white, long hair, short hair. You come through my main gate laughing some scared, mostly you act like teenagers, mostly you are teenagers. You each come here for your own reasons, but most come to test themselves, most need a direction in their lives. As you pass through my main gate your lives will change from that point on. I hope to see you leave as Marines, but you will not all leave together as Marines. Some will leave by themselves ,not Marines. They did not make the goal, my heart goes out to them, but not everyone can be a Marine. But today my heart is full of pride, for the next graduation of recruits, now MARINES, is leaving my front gate, teenagers no more but young men & women with a history to live up to.13 weeks and just look at the change. You know this is a happy day for me, but my best days are yet to come. That's when these Marines come back to see me 20, 30, 40 years from now. Oh yea, a lot of the old ones come back to see me, they have not forgottenOld Parris Island and I have not forgotten them. Former Marines and I have this bond, it's in our blood, it's PRIDE it is where it all started for both of us. My sad days are the ones that those that can't come back to see me those that were killed in WW1, WW11,Korea,Viet Nam, Beirut and all the little actions around the world. Hey, I've got to go have a bus load coming in tonight and one leaving in the morning...SEMPER FI!! You all come back and see me you hear!!

Oh I know San Diego had at least one merit lol

Sand Fleas were a cross between a mosquito and a wasp, the bug juice they issued us never worked and only SSS worked.
I remember leaving chow and having what ever DI we had for the evening have us hippity hop through the grass behind 3 Bn. HQ just to call the platoon to attention for about 15 minutes so "His little bugs could eat too" lol

I just got the scoop on my pops after all these years and he says he did not go to Paris Island, he was attending OCS, Quantico. Wether he completed training or not i didn't ask but apparently he had a two year agreement written somewhere on paper and they said in order to be commisioned an officer he would have to extend 4 years. Well my old man has always had timelines and he said no. So he remained at Quantico and served the rest of his two years as admin. I just assumed he went to Paris Island because he occasionaly joked about Hollywood and his old uniforms had stripes.

FYI - I was also Foxtrot Co. in '89.

DI SSGT Reed - "You a mutha fvkin UNQ Smith!"
Pvt Smith - " Sir, No Sir! "
DI SSGT Reed - " What'd you shoot on the range today Smith? "
Pvt Smith - " Sir, 223 Sir! "

I DID IT AT THE MCRD PARIS ISLAND NOVG/58-FEB/59
PLT 360/Q CO. 3rd BN. We lived in nisan huts with kerocene stoves, and
had to jog to the head. Morning run was on the 2nd Bn grinder, Then we would go to chow. Our three weeks at the rifle range was the only rest we had for the 3 months. 2 smokes a day and all the water you wanted.
I would'nt change those 3 mo.s for anything .

I hear that Parris Island had to be harder, I guess that is because those of us who grew up western started out tougher to begin with. ie... shooting, running canyons, camping out under the stars, fighting off wild dogs, killing stuff etc....

well let me tell you, being born and raised in San Diego Ca, it was only natural that I join the biggest and baddest gang in the world, so I signed up. Went to Mep's, downtown ( the old SD courthouse ) waited all day as people shuffeled in and out, I just could not be patient about when I was leaving. Well soon there were only five of us left and they were getting ready to close for the day, when someone told us that our ride to M.C.R.D. had arrived, ( oh Goodie ). Well goodie, it was, a black stretch Limo,( I sware to GOD), the driver asked us if we wanted to go for a ride before we arrive in hell, being full of **** and vinegar we said bring it on. We toured the city like Rock Stars, and before we new it we were at the back door of processing. The driver told us to enter the doorway turn right at the hallway and say WE ARE here. Well lets say we were properly introduced to the Worlds Finest DI, ( can you feel the pucker factor) what a set up, any ways the rest is history and I would, re due it all in a heart beat.

:flag: Plt 2209, or as SSgt McClain would say, "twent-two oh nienne. ATTACK"

November 1967 to Jan '68. Spent Christmas and New Years on the rifle range. We didn't have a Senior Drill Instructor, we had a Platoon Comander name of SSgt W. W. Taylor and a newby (we were his first platoon out of DI school) name of Sgt C. A. Fell. Sgt Fell just got back from Viet Nam and had a Bronze Star for finding a stash of munitions, at least that's how I recall it now.

Aww, those were the happy days. Drilling on the grinder and wanting to be on one of those commercial jet liners going home that went overhead about every 5 minutes. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

How old would you guess Sgt Graves to be at that time. We had a Sgt Graves for Platoon2020 in 1958...He loved to drink cough medicine for the codene while instructing.

'course it was a Navy doctor!
When SSGT Jim Nelson refused to get a job, his father insisted he join the Marines. At the induction physical, the doctor directed the reluctant recruit to read the eye chart across the room.
"What chart?" the young man asked.
"The one on the wall!" The doctor said.
"What wall?"
Sensing he had a deadbeat on his hands, the doctor asked his beautiful nurse to walk in naked.
"What do you see now?"

"Nothing."
"Well, you may not see anything," the doctor said, "but your 'indicator' is pointing toward MCRD San Diego!
Welcome to the Marine Corps, son."

Grew up in the swamps and marshes of East Central Florida so PI was like home away from home. DI's were Sgt. Potes, Sgt. Frazier and Sgt. Robles. Not a day rolls by I don't think of at least one of these fine gentleman. Each had his own unique quality and way of getting the point across that almost made you think they cared. Truly born to their profession. Grateful to this day for the privelege of having those 3 individuals indoctrinate 3088 into a lifelong commitment, being a United States Marine.
