In the spring of 1969 I was unfocused, undisciplined and unmotivated.

In the intervening 44 years, from then until now, I have had a remarkable life, with many dreams fulfilled and more rewards than I might have had reason to expect.

Ssgt Stanley, my boot camp drill instructor, was a significant catalyst that drove the change.

I would very much like to have the opportunity to tell him in person how grateful I am for his influence.

Ssgt Bruce R Stanley was a drill instructor for MCRD San Diego Platoon 3114 from June until July of 1969. In July 1969 he was pulled away from our platoon to assume the platoon commander position in the Motivation Platoon. I believe he would be about 70 years old today, if he is still alive.

Anyone have any leads?

Thanks in advance.
John Carroll

Thanks very much, SGT7477! I registered on the West Coast DI Association web site after thoroughly scouring it for information. It was a great reference and I am hopeful that it pans out with a contact.

There is also a place on the site to email SSgt Gregg Stoner to see if he is a member of the West Coast DI Association, Good Luck, Semper Fidelis.

Hi m14ed...for some reason the administrator blocked your post.

It appears that maybe it was blocked because it included a personal phone number.

Thanks very much for attempting to respond to my request for info.

Yes, I saw the notification .. and it pi$$ed me off...Not that I can do much about it...

I understand WHY they did it,,,BUT don't understand WHY they didn't forward the information to you before they deleted the information....

Hello John,

I too was in 3114 at the same time you were. I am a fellow "slimy maggot" as Sgt. Stanley used to say. Since boot camp I have spoken with Erk the Jerk and Carson Day. I also had a conversation with Bruce Schultz some years back. And that is it. I too have had a good life and I too give a good bit of the credit to Sgt. Stanley.

Sadly, Sgt. Stanley passed a few years ago at the age of 72 I believe. He has a son, Bruce R. Stanley Jr of San Diego. He has his own photography business. He is also a well educated person as well. I think he has his Masters.

I sure would like to hear from you. I now reside in Lake Charles, Louisiana. This is my 13th address since leaving the Marines.

I got stationed in Aiea, Hawaii and processed Vietnam replacements (KIAs, WIAs,and MIAs); ypu, a Remington Raider! Not a pleasant job, but I don't have the right to complain. I was dry and safe and had 3 squares a day with a beautiful island.

I am on marriage two, the first was a short one, no kids. The second, two kids and almost 40 years strong.

All my life I have had crazy flashbacks to the Marines and particularly boot camp. It is a good thing.

I now work for the National Transportation Safety Board as a pipeline investigator. I love the work. I work out of my home and drive to the airport when an accident happens. I cover all 50 States. I retired from the US Chemical Safety Board but found retirement too boring.

I would love to catch up with you.

My personal email is revans219@gmail.com. My wife's name is Cindy.

I really hope this finds you happy, healthy, and wise.

All the best. Semper Fi!!!!

Roger D. Evans
