For the second time in less than five days, a Yuma military jet has crashed after its pilot safely ejected.

An AV-8B Harrier jumpjet from Marine Attack Squadron-211 crashed in a remote area of California's Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range at about 10:30 a.m. Monday, said 1st Lt. Kevin Hyde, public affairs officer for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

No other aircraft was involved in the mishap, which is being investigated, Hyde said. The pilot was conducting a post-maintenance check flight when the crash occurred, Hyde added. He said he believed the aircraft was destroyed in the crash, although he was not certain.

After ejecting from his plane, the pilot radioed the air station and said he was in good condition, Hyde said. The station's Search and Rescue helicopter launched immediately, picked the pilot up and took him to Yuma Regional Medical Center for a checkup.
