Last April "TheDrifter" and "Freebird" organized the DC Memorial Trip. I had the pleasure to meet some fine Marines and friends of Marines from the website. It is about time to start planning next years reunion. Let's get your thoughts and ideas on where, when and what activities we should plan?

Here is the link to the 1st Leatherneck.com Reunion:

Come on Marines!!!!!!! Give us some of your ideas on what we can do on this trip.

How about Cas being our tour guide again..................ROFLMAO

We sure would like to see some of your ideas and who would plan on being there.

Plan to have trip in May, possibly the 3rd week-end.

Roger

NO PASSENGERS? NOT FOR HIRE is now written on my car.

Suggest we :
HAVE A PLAN THIS TIME!
EVERYONE WHO SAYS THEY WILL BE THERE, SHOULD BE!
Get a group bus.
Make arrangments with 8th and I for a private parade.

San Diego, sounds good Sgt "T" with a day visit to MCRD, to the zoo or to black beach...LMAO

I can work on getting us good hotel accumadations in Diego, since its not too far, and then maybe we can all meet Laura relatives in TJ...LMAO

Hey, that's not funny Sparrow. I DO have relatives
in TJ. Alot of them, so don't be laughing because atleast
they'll give us free rooming and food :p

Like it would break you to spend that $1 per night in La Cocarachia infested hotels. Although you would probably have to throw in an extra peso for the donkey show :p

There an Inn on the base, The Crossroads Inn, reasonable.
They might even throw in a room where we can meet on arrivial.
Would have to make reservations in advance.
About a half mile from the base is a resturant;
The Globe and Lureal.
Its owner is a retired Marine Corps Officer.
The food is reasonable but outstanding.

http://www.heritagestudio.com/spooner.htm

If that link works you be able to see their menu and their prices.

This resturant has more Marine Corps memomobilia than most Marine Corps meuseums.

There several things on the base to see.

If we're lucky, we might even get a tour of the base.

One draw back, the base is a long drive from Washington, D.C not in distance but in time.

This is a great area for the reunion. There are many attractions in the area.

While a tour of the bases and it's facilities (HMX-1, OCS, TBS, etc.) would be nice, trying to get lodging will be a nightmare. Remember, you would be competing for rooms with those that are on PCS, TAD or invitational orders (and they have priority). Lodging will be cheaper in the Quantico area as opposed to D.C. We might be able to have a social event (barbeque) at Lunga Recreational Area as a welcome aboard event/ice breaker. There is a Ramada Inn within two miles of the front gate to Quantico. They have a pool, lounge and restaurant on site. There may also be banquet rooms etc. that could be used as the command post/hospitality room. Obviously the D.C. area has the monuments, the museums (Air and Space is my personal favorite) and the other landmarks. There would certainly be enough activities to pack into a few days.

LadyLeatherneck
08-30-02, 01:10 PM
Yeah I think I would agree more to the Quantico thing.
I've done two D.C. trips back to back and I'm not sure there's
more of D.C. to see than what I already have. The first
time was great because I saw The Wall for the first time
and all the other great monuments and the second time
was even better because I got to spend the WHOLE day
around Marines at Henderson Hall and at the Pentagon.
Great Motivation!!! Oh and the 8th & I tour was good this
year due to the fact that the year before I only got as far as
the gate..LOL!

I THINK DIEGO WOULD BE A GOOD PLACE TO HOLD A REUNION.....WE HAVE THE SUN, THE BEACH, AND LL

I think Sgt T is right. Why don't we do a west coast? I mean
in all fairness we've done the east coast twice. So why don't
we take a vote on how many would like to do a west coast
reunion? We could go see a graduation at MCRD and go hang
out at Miramar or Camp Pendleton. There's tons of things to do.
Heck we can even go to the happiest place on earth...DISNEYLAND!! :D

8th&I Marine
08-30-02, 01:52 PM
I think Diego would be alot of fun. See a graduation and hang out. go to pendleton and play out there then we could all load up and go to TJ to have a good time. Lord knows how many of us went there when we werent suppose too. I am game for really about anything yall can come up with.

The DC Wall Trip was designed by FREEBIRD and I to gather Our Brothers and Sisters together to help give support to others to observe Our Fallen Heroes at the Wall.
We have had Veterans from all era's and their spouses come to this tradition.
Yes it would be our third for some, but the whole idea is We are Marines Helping Marines.........

Let's get your thoughts and ideas on where, when and what activities we should plan?

Well from the response it looks like some of you already
decided on the WHERE. So maybe the above question
should be edited to say When and What activities will be
planned on the D.C. trip.

Shaffer
08-30-02, 03:47 PM
The concept of this post was to field ideas from everyone and to see who is interested. No plans have been set as of yet. San Diego, Quantico and DC are all good ideas and all possibilities. We will not rule out any ideas in regards to the reunion. If you have any questions you can always email or PM me.

Have a good weekend!

you get all the jobs no one wanted in the first place.

If you are making recommendations for a site, please consider volunteering to accept responsibility to help coordinate and arrange events at your location.

I believe in looking at other opportunities for a reunion site, but also think that the D.C. area is a great location. Besides LL, we can always take you to Six Flags here or King's Dominion if you need to get on some kiddie rides. By the way, will you be done with traffic school by the time we come there? Will you be able to drive? LOL.

SF,

LadyLeatherneck
08-30-02, 04:13 PM
I'm cleared with traffic school thank you very much. :D
Like I said I'm cool with Quantico or San Diego, but
not to sure if I'll go to D.C. again for the 3rd time straight.

And I'll be more than willing to go to Six Flags and take all
the kids with me. I love roller coasters!

Additionally, a vote for "whatever" does not mean San Diego or Vegas. Let's at least try to give the appearance of fairness.

Let the voting continue!!!

Sounds good Sixguns. Good point because then all we

We should also keep the voting open for so long. Then the votes need to be tallied and planning needs to begin in order to have this thing come off well. I recommend October 31st. That gives nearly six months to lock in a hotel, events and sponsor support for a reunion. Just an idea.

Sixguns
08-30-02, 06:05 PM
Roger, I am not sure on the exact date. I am waiting for approval of my retirement application (can you believe you have to get permission to retire?) back from HQMC. I am thinking it will be mid-May. Not certain yet. I would love to do it in conjunction with the reunion, but I am willing to go wherever the majority feels is the best location. Heck, depending on the date of the reunion, I may be on terminal leave.

Isn't Smedley Butler buried somewhere near Philadelphia too?

I've seen it all out West. Hawaii, TJ, all that jazz - Stumps (ogod) Miramar,Coronado, Whidby Island, freekin you name it.

Told my wife the other morning that we was plannin a reunion next year - word was (kinda) leaning towards DC and The Wall. I myself, have my own personal mission to accomplish there. Besides, I have never been to 8th and I. And, dammit This Marine has to view this once in his life live and in person. Videotape does not do it justice.

I got out of the Corps in Cherry Point. No desire to go back that far south, unless it was to P.I. Besides, my dad told me - don't go to Parris Island... LMAO the sand fleas are murder.

Check me in for East Coast. I may have guests, not sure yet.

Then thiers folks who'd like to visit Diego....

(Personally I didn't like the donkey show at TJ....made me feel a bit inadequate fer some reason)

any way, if you folks aren't real careful, yer gonna run into some problems.....

Ever think about two trips? One to the wall, the other to another location significant to Marines or our history?

Okey dokey. First I want to share some ground rules with
everyone and see if you agree. Please and I state, please,
if you have your doubts of not attending please do not vote.
Last year there was a handful of names of people attending
and we had a bunch of people UA!!!
Second, I'm not counting spouses or
significant others in the voting. I'll put the name of spouses
or significant others on the same line (if that's okay with everyone). So this is what we have so far and these are people

Well, let's see. I've only been to NC and SC on the East Coast. That did not thrill me at all. Would love to see the monuments and memorials in the DC area. Though, San Diego would be fun. But unless I have some very drastic changes in my financial future, it looks like this venture will be done without me. Ladies, dry your eyes and men, buck up. I will make at least one reunion... someday.

Just a couple suggestions for y'all to consider. Another place that could make for a good reunion site (no, drifter did not pay me to say this) is Philly, meeting place; Tun Tavern. Perhaps, and figure on when you want this to start, if it sounds like a good idea, to alternate between the coasts each year. Or, to have two reunions at different times of the year.. Early summer for the West Coast and late summer for the East Coast (as an example). More can go and perhaps not travel as far or can make it for one time of year but not another. I was also wondering, not to be exclusionary, will you have only Marines vote on this or can any member, former/current Marine or not, vote? Just something to consider.

Oh yeah, and why would an 18 year old, aka legal adult, need to have a permission slip from parents/guardians? I'm sure not every activity would involve a bar or drinking alcoholic beverages. If you choose to let non-Marine members vote, then these non-Marine members should also be allowed to attend without Marine escort.

I'm really not trying to stir up a hornets nest and perhaps my not going puts my opinion out of the loop. I just thought I'd send out a couple ideas if y'all are going to consider the options seriously. Good luck on the decision and I'm sure, no matter where it is held, it will be a fun time to be had by all.

Sophora
09-01-02, 07:18 AM
Just a faint echo on Barrio_Rats post. If Morgan is 18 she is legally an adult and does not need parental/guardian permission to go. At the first reunion, the group drinking was a Freebirds place and Troops hotel room, where we can make sure she has plenty of soft drinks.

I won't cast a vote since I'm willing to try to go where the majority decides. Either coast works. I got family in the DC area and San Diego is driving distance from me.

Noticed your references to Tun Tavern....I attended 1st Marine Div Assoc reunion in Philly [1999]...our tour past by the site of Tun Tavern...there is a messy looking sign denoting where Tun Tavern stood...the site is boarded up and Tun Tavern was razed: other than that, Philly is a damn good liberty town [US Marine Friendly]...one suggestion...in lieu of no Tun Tavern...there's "Cookie's Tavern" in South Philly [a $10 cab ride from downtown] run by a US Marine Vietnam Vet...WIA: Sgt Jimmy Wagner "Wags"...you go there and you'll swear you are aboard base in a USMC slopschute...it can hold up to 100 patrons...Marine decor all around..juke box with Marines Hymn...Anchors Away and Semper Fidelis marches played by Boston Pops...floor show is "Wags" assisting Boston Pops on Semper Fi with his silver glockenspeil...closes out floor show with singing Irish dittys that will bring a tear to your eye..."Wags" was a USMC machine gunner in 3rd Marine Div...to me, our liberty to his bar/grill was the highlight of highlights on that reunion...Cops came to hold down the roar...they left shaking heads as they were all former "Nam" Marines...in Philly drop into "Cookies Tavern" for a US Marine kick-ass gabfest.

Cook, I told you that Philadelphia had more to offer than that other place. East Coast is the place to be..............LOL

Sempers,

Roger

PS: You are not going to find too much info on Cookies Tavern, but I know where it is. Word of mouth by Marines is what has made the place so popular. The place is for Marines only.......

(did I already say that??? oh, I told the wife this morning - officially. Might make it a long one and go to www.merlefest.com afterwards in North Carolina.) That's like the granddaddy of outdoor music festivals for the year. They post the schedule around November (imagine that)

Just a suggestion..

And the votes just keep on rolling in!! CAS hasn't voted yet. I bet she'll vote for East Coast though. That way if she gets lost, it'll be closer to home!! LOL.

umm, what was the question again?

Anyway, I live in Maryland, just outside DC, so I can help with land nav in the DC area (and haven't been down to the Wall in a couple years, so I'm due for a visit), also know my way down to and around Quantico pretty well from years in the Reserve using facilities on base there.

The Left coast would be hard for me, on a budget. So DC or Philly would be great for me. I have a preference to Philly, so I could show you all around my AO.

I want to make my vote official. D.C. is my vote. I was stationed there for 3 and half yrs. I would love to see a friday night parade on the other side of the parade deck. PLus that place has changed in the past 10 yrs so i would like to see it again.

This was on page three of this thread from me. I guess you were to busy selling your West Coast reunion plan to notice this. LOL.

There should also be a termination date
We should also keep the voting open for so long. Then the votes need to be tallied and planning needs to begin in order to have this thing come off well. I recommend October 31st. That gives nearly six months to lock in a hotel, events and sponsor support for a reunion. Just an idea.

I think oct 31 is fine but i think if we go to DC we should go in the summer so we can make a friday night parade.

... till LL got some of the facts straight.

Now, LL, THE CONDENSED VERSION PLEASE!

But seriously, I've been holding off till those in the know knew.

Put me in for the EAST coast (that's the side the sun comes up on, right !!!). Definatley closer to Tenn. Date isn't going to matter, cause I don't know what my schedule will be anyway. It changes, but I'm sure you will pick a weekend. :D I'll be there if I can, if not, then I won't make it.

IF.... any one is driving through, Let me know, and I can try to set up some layover 'festivities'. Maybe just 'a hot and a cot', but better than the side of the road !!!

Looking forward to rubbing .... er .... ahhh.... elbows, yhea that's good... elbows with some of ya.

Just found out that I can't make the reunion no matter what. The third weekend in May, I have a mandatory choir concert, all day thing that Saturday. The following week, we are going on tour to New Orleans for 5 days. Maybe next time.

This still on? Our choir tour has been bumped up, and is the last week of March now, so if I can scrounge up money, I can probably come, if'n I'm welcome, and if'n it's still happening. Just wanted to bump the thread! Happy Birthday Marines, and Happy Veterans Day!
