A Marine, just hours after graduating, drowns. How did he graduate if he could not swim? If you were UNQ back in the day, you didn't make it.

I personally never ever qualified swimming while in the Marine Corps.
I had a staph infection in Boot, and was not allowed in the pool.
I graduated with my original platoon Oct 68.
To top that off ! I was in Amtracs at Del Mar. 1833. :)

The Marine who drowned hours after graduating from boot camp has been identified as a 19-year-old private first class from Ohio.

Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island spokeswoman Lt. Melanie Salinas says Jonathon Crawford of Clermont County, Ohio, was an exemplary recruit. He was among 526 Marines who graduated Friday. Crawford was promoted to private first class, while others graduated as privates.

Crawford drowned hours later off Hunting Island State Park. Officials say Crawford disappeared while swimming about 40 yards from the beach.

A relative called 911 after losing sight of him.
The body was recovered about 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that roughly 600 recruits lined the street leading from the base as Crawford's family left Saturday morning for Ohio.

Accidents happen. This poor guy, I feel for him.

I don't know why but sometimes when these incidents are brought up in safety briefs I get a little angry depending on how they present the case. Sometimes whoever is giving the brief is using the incident as an example, and sometimes it just rubs off wrong. I think "What SHOULD he have done" is a good example of what I am saying. Yeah, no crap, we got it, we know what he should have done, how about we just mourn the loss, pray for him, then say "Hey just remember to stay safe out there Marines," as opposed to a case study on what they seem to portray as his "alleged stupidity."

At any rate, RIP Marine.
