Nasa today released a stunning video showing a 500,000 mile long 'solar whip' on the surface of the sun - and the beautiful aurora it created on earth.

Captured by from NASAís Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the video shows in unprecedented detail a very long, whip-like solar filament extending over half a million miles in a long arc above the sunís surface.

the solar flair ups are a cause of concern for NASA and the Gov,, one strong enough could cause the electric grid to go down and knock out communication satellites, to go down as well,, and the "experts" say we are long over due for a really big one,,
but it is fascinating to see something so spectacular

Yeah, really amazing stuff.

As for the grid, I don't know if we've done anything to upgrade our grid to be able to handle such a flare (or even if there is anything that we can do about it).
