Three Marines arrested for taking explosives, weapons

By C. Mark Brinkley
Times staff writer

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Three Marines accused of making off with more than $160,000 worth of bomb-making materials, weapons parts and tools were arrested here Tuesday, base officials said.
Marine officials have not released the names or ranks of the individuals, but announced that all three are members of Camp Lejeune’s 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion.

“An investigation was initiated after information was provided to Naval Criminal Investigative Service that a Marine within the unit was in possession of government property,” base officials said in a statement issued Tuesday night. “Because the matter is still under investigation, no further information is available at this time.”

A small amount of explosives and weapons parts were recovered, along with remote-controlled detonation devices, blasting caps and tools, Marine officials said in the statement.

Such crimes are not uncommon in the military. In October, two Camp Lejeune Marines were arrested in South Carolina after allegedly stealing a variety of weapons, ammunition and night-vision gear from a base armory.

The Navy was plagued by a string of such crimes in 1995, as grenades, explosives and other munitions disappeared and later were sold to gangs and weapons dealers. In 1997, an NCIS sting at Camp Lejeune known as “Operation Longfuse” landed six Marines - a captain, four staff noncommissioned officers and a sergeant - in jail for stealing ammunition, hand grenades and a variety of other munitions.

That bust led then-Defense Secretary William Cohen to call for a 30-day review of security procedures for safeguarding military small arms and munitions.
