U.S., North Korea agree on more searches for Americans' remains

WASHINGTON – The United States and North Korea agreed on five new search missions for the remains of American troops killed half a century ago during the Korean War.

The agreement calls for the joint search missions to begin early next year in Unsan County and near the Chosin Reservoir north of the capital, Pyongyang, the Pentagon said Monday. The two sides agreed on the searches during talks Friday and Saturday in Bangkok, Thailand, the Pentagon statement said.

Talks on recovering remains from the 1950-53 Korean War have progressed despite tensions between Washington and Pyongyang over North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Both countries have agreed to keep the remains issue separate from the nuclear problem.

More than 8,100 American troops remain missing from the Korean War, including about 1,100 from the Chosin campaign. The Army's 7th Infantry Division fought fierce battles with Chinese forces near the reservoir in November and December 1950.

Members of the Army's 1st Cavalry and 25th Infantry divisions fought in Unsan County in November 1950.

In the most recent search, eight sets of remains from the Chosin and Unsan areas were repatriated to the United States last month.
