Marine killed in crash on Okinawa

GINOWAN, Okinawa — A 19-year-old Marine died early Tuesday of injuries sustained in a two-car collision on Highway 58 in the Oyama District of Ginowan.

Okinawa Prefecture police said Lance Cpl. Xionel Sharone Abreu, assigned to Marine Air Control Group 18 at Futenma Marine Corps Air Station, was in the front passenger seat of a car driven by Cpl. Jason Hosey, 22, also of Control Group 18.

The car sideswiped a vehicle in the northbound lane of the highway, swerved out of control and struck a concrete utility pole at about 12:30 a.m., police said.

At the time of the crash, it was drizzling and the road was slick.

“The body of the vehicle was almost completely wrapped around the concrete pole,” a police spokesman said.

A memorial service for Abreu, of Orlando, Fla., is being planned for Friday. Details will be announced.

Abreu, Hosey and two Marines riding in the back of the Nissan four-door sedan were taken to U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Lester, where Abreu was pronounced dead 20 minutes later of massive head injuries.

Hosey is being treated at Naval Hospital for a back injury, police said.

Pfc. Marquis Lamont Hood, 19, who was in the back seat behind the driver, was being treated for multiple fractures, including a fractured neck, police said.

Their conditions were not immediately available.

The fourth Marine in Hosey’s car, Sgt. Gabriel Baker, 26, who was sitting behind Abreu, was treated and released Tuesday from the hospital, police said. Hood and Baker are also assigned to Control Group 18.

The car Hosey’s vehicle sideswiped was driven by another Marine, who had his wife in the passenger seat, police said.

Their names were not immediately available, police said, noting they were not injured.

“According to the report, the car involved in the fatal injury moved close to the side of the other car and the Marines said something to the couple before the car driven by Hosey bumped the couple’s car,” the police spokesman said. “That’s when Hosey apparently lost control and swerved into the utility pole.”

He did not know if the occupants of the two cars knew each other.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
