"The trench feet were so bad we couldn't even get their socks removed because you would be pulling the skin off."

Swerdlow, of Oceanside, said she recently attended an 80th birthday party for one of the sickest patients she had treated during the war. She said his grandchildren greeted her and said thanks for saving his life.

At the end of the war, Swerdlow turned down a promotion and left the Army. She married Staff Sgt. Swerdlow in 1946. The couple had three children, and she worked as a school nurse in La Puente.
