TWENTYNINE PALMS – Two Marines stationed at Twentynine Palms have been arrested in the shooting deaths of two other Marines whose bodies were found in a burning car, authorities said Friday.

The suspects were identified by deputies as Demitrius McClendon and Vernon Walker, both 20. They were arrested Thursday for investigation of murder, conspiracy and arson, said Cindy Beavers, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The victims were identified by the county coroner's office as Julio Chavarria-Vargas, 22, and Angel Wathen, 22, of Kenosha, Wisc., both Marines at Twentynine Palms.

"How could two other Marines just do this to somebody, you know?" asked Wathen's brother, Marcos Cruz, in Wisconsin. "This is really hard for everybody right now."

Firefighters and deputies found the burning car Sunday in a ditch after someone called 911.

The victims were shot to death in Rancho Cucamonga and driven to Twentynine Palms, where the car was set on fire, said sheriff's Sgt. Gerrit C. Tesselaar.

Both bodies were burned beyond recognition, officials said.
