The Limits to Diversity in the Military

During the prelude to Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, there seemed to be no end to the left-wing “educrats” who tolerate everything except dissent against their own ideals and who tolerate everyone as long as they’re faithfully indoctrinated in the socialism that permeates our colleges and universities.
Here’s a recent example. Southern Methodist University in Dallas is a stalwart defender of liberty and freedom of speech - as long as it’s politically correct speech or behavior.
Late last month, Ms. Gretchen Rollins, Assistant Director of Career Services at SMU, recently sent out an e-mail to the students of the university’s Dedman School of Law announcing a scheduled visit on Oct. 7, 2003 from Lt. Dan Werner of the Navy Judge Advocate General Corps. Her e-mail read:

“Come learn more about the career opportunities that exist within the Navy Judge Advocate General Corps. Lt. Dan Werner will be here to visit with students about internships and permanent positions with the Navy JAG Corps.

“When: Tuesday, October 7th at 12:25 p.m.
Where: Florence Hall, Room 107
We’ll see you there!

Then she added this:
“Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law is compelled by federal statute to permit the United States Navy Judge Advocate General’s office to recruit our students on campus or risk the loss of federal student financial aid funding.
“Federal statute prohibits membership in the armed forces of a person who ‘has engaged in, attempted to engage in, or solicited another to engage in a homosexual act,’ or a person who ‘has stated that he or she is a homosexual or bisexual, or words to that effect,’ or ‘has married or attempted to marry a person known to be of the same biological sex.’ ”
“Because the faculty of the SMU Dedman School Of Law subscribes to the policies of the Association Of American Law Schools and the American Bar Association, that together prohibit employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability or sexual orientation, we offer access to this employer under protest.”
I have to ask Ms. Rollins and the legal community that ascribes to these standards: What happened to your principles?
There have been no National Guard troops called out to force SMU to accept federal funds at bayonet point. Just say no! Don't accept the funds.
Surely within the power community of the SMU alumni there are enough people who support your stance against the troops that replacing the federal funding shouldn’t be a problem.
Or probably not.
According to a press release from David Rushing, President of the Young Conservatives of Texas and a second-year law student, SMU and a number of universities calling themselves “The Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights,” have courageously slinked their way to federal district court in New Jersey to challenge the constitutionality of the Solomon Amendment, which is the very law requiring colleges to allow U.S. military recruiters access to college campuses or risk losing federal funds.
Meanwhile, news developments over the weekend show that Yale University is “coming out of the closet” in a different way altogether to lead the way in fighting what the “educrats” term the vicious military discrimination inherent in “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Fox News reported on Oct. 28 that Yale Law School Professor Robert Burt has filed suit against the Department of Defense and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld challenging the DoD policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
By itself this would hardly raise eyebrows - academia just loves to sue and harass the U.S. military at every opportunity - but a concurrent mini-drama playing out among their comrades in the House Democratic Caucus on Capitol Hill merits close scrutiny.
I refer, of course, to the complete lack of “tolerance” currently being shown Lt.
Gen. William G. “Jerry” Boykin by Reps. John Conyers D-MI (original sponsor),Dennis Kucinich, D-OH, Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-TX, Maxine Waters, D-CA and sixteen other Democrat representatives at last count from the Arab-American Institute.
The twenty Representatives apparently are so incensed about Gen. Boykin’s recent remarks at a prayer breakfast declaring his Christian faith and personal beliefs that al Qaeda represents Satan, that they have introduced House Resolution 419 that calls for a new “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The Conyers sponsored resolution condemns religiously intolerant remarks (except for those intolerant remarks made by these Representatives) and calls on President Bush to clearly censure and reassign Lt. Gen. Boykin for his religiously intolerant remarks.
"Congress shall make no laws regarding the establishment of religion." Yet this Democratic cabal, seeks to control Lt. Gen. Boykin's constitutionally protected First Amendment rights of worship and they wantonly violate the First Amendment establishment clause decried by the left whenever a person of faith utters The Ten Commandments “or” school prayer.
Some of General Boykin's more egregious remarks include:
* "Islamic extremists hate the United States because 'we're a Christian nation,"
* "I knew that my God was a real God, and [the Muslim god] was an idol,"
* "The enemy that has come against our nation is a spiritual enemy named Satan."
Worst of all, General Boykin refuses to apologize or retract his remarks and compromise his personal religious stance.
In reading the closing "Resolved" paragraphs, I noted this small oddity:
"Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) Condemns bigotry and intolerance against any religious group, including people of the Islamic faith;"
Except for the congressional intolerance shown to the religious group Lt.Gen. Boykin was addressing.
Dear God, (oops, I mean Allah) we wouldn't want to offend them. Muslim extremists might fly airplanes into our buildings and kill thousands of our citizens if we offend them.
In other words, in Democratland, it’s okay in the U.S. military to be openly homosexual but not openly Christian. That tolerance so highly valued in academia and Congress seems to abruptly stop if you wear the uniform of our country.
