MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif.(November 7, 2003) -- "Make them Marines," commands the company first sergeant to drill instructors.

Every Thursday morning, hundreds watch from the bleachers as drill instructors present each recruit with the coveted eagle, globe and anchor, making them Marines.

With the Marine Corps emblem securely bolted on their garrison caps, the new Marines receive the command to commence Family Day.

After facing about, the spectators rush the parade grounds to embrace and congratulate their freshly minted Marines. Wives throw their arms around their clean-cut husbands and adorn them with kisses built up with three months of passion. Mothers with tear-soaked blouses leave lipstick blots on freshly shaven cheeks, and fathers firmly shake hands.

Showing off boot camp's transformation carries an unparalleled pride, especially for the closest people in a new Marine's life.

Whether it's mom, wife or girlfriend, the new Marines walk proudly with their number one ladies on their arms while discovering things on the Depot they have not yet experienced, to include junk food and shopping.

The new Marines and their guests have a cornucopia of activities and areas to explore during their day. Suddenly, the Depot's permanent-personnel side is taken over by Marines with fresh haircuts and Service C uniforms. A green and khaki sea splashes the food court as new Marines take unrestrained pleasure in eating fast food in lieu of the mess hall food they've been eating for three months.

At the recreation center, Marines remove their dress shoes and replace them with multi-colored bowling shoes, and discarding their ingrained drill habits, they loosely send strikes down lanes.

They check accumulated e-mails and make long-distance calls to those who couldn't make the Depot visit. They spend the majority of the day with loved ones and enjoy rediscovered freedoms that became so much sweeter thanks to recruit training.

With the setting sun, the men say goodbye and retire to their quarters as ordered. The next morning is graduation. In the meantime, they prepare for their exodus from the Depot with a unique night of satisfying sleep. Bellies filled, teeth sweetened, and senses perfumed.

It's not like it used to be...many a recruit paid for eating a lot of what call "fast food".
Hamburgers and milk shakes found their way on the deck.
After going to the mess hall to eat evening chow.
Than a "little run" of three miles...the Drill Instructor want to show that we weren't out of his crasp...till the next day, when he gave to the command to dismiss.
Thinking back to 1958 Plt 302 MCRD San Diego...I'm a "Hollywood Marine".
