I'd seen this one a couple of months back but it was on yesterday again.
I couldn't watch it.

Being from the Pleistocene USMC I was in total dismay that my dear and beloved M14 was like 9 or 10 on their rating system.
I'm in deep grief and will now go cry in my beer.:beer:

I guess I'm just one that doesn't know any better.

That's it....carry on....

:D
Well Brother OM....I won't say anything to anyone.
Hmmm....I don't recall the M1 being in the mix on that show.
It should have been called 'Top 11 Combat Rifles' then M1 would be there...in order of magnitude above the first M16 release.:)

Carry on.....

Most of the rifles on that list were made by Mattell, I thought. Continue to march.

Read 'em and weep. M-1 thumb #4!

10 - M14
9 - Sturmgewehr 44
8 - Springfield 1903
7 - Steyr AUG 77
6 - Mauser K98K
5 - FN FAL
4 - M1 Garand
3 - Lee Enfield SMLE
2 - M 16
And a winner is - AK 47.

Hey R Landry.....

Like I said...'I'm just one that doesn't know any better.'

Seriously, I'm sure the M14 is archaic by today's standards.
I was just a little surprised it was rated 10.
Sh!t....the M1 surprised me too.
It was an interesting show.

Happy Friday....carry on...

Showing your age Chu Lai ---- I represent that remark !

M-14 is a fine weapon. M1 is top shelf
Then we went to Matty Matels

In country we were not closely monitored what weapons we carried.
The M-16 was my last choice LOL

Hey Apache...

Sh!t....I thought you Old Ones couldn't do the math-age-equation so I took a chance and posted my dismay in the rating.:)
You're all too smart for me.

This err certainly won't happen again provided I can remember that I posted this to begin with.

Happy Friday.....carry on....

the m-14 was so low due to it saw very little combat before being replaced by the m-16

Excellent point which never occurred to me.
A few years usage in VN would not have been the most accurate reliability test.

Belly up everyone...I'm buying....it after 5:00 Shanghai.

Marine1955....

That's the one....great clip.
It's the 'stopping power' aspect that is paramount from my dated perspective.

Thanks for posting that.
Carry on....

Can anyone tell me what size round that the M1 or M2 Carbine fired?
I know that it was 30 cal but was it 762.33 or something else?

Dad was a bit disappointed in how low the M14 ranked. He swears by it. Says the M14 was much more reliable, easier to break down with less parts than the M16, had more stopping power so you needed less ammo.
After he bought one a couple years ago I completely agree.
He has also said a lot of men died because the M16 was so fickle. He never understood why the M16 was chosen when there was other weapons that fired the same round that scored better.

Your memory hasn't failed you. It's 7.62X33.

.30-06 Springfield (7.62x63mm)
7.62x51mm NATO (.308 Winchester) (Used by the U.S. Navy and some commercial companies to modernize the M1 and increase performance)

I've been fortunate to have been able to shoot all of those listed weapons. It is my opinion that it is difficult to rate those weapons like that without breaking them down into bolt-action, semi-auto, and full-auto categories.

Personally, out of the bunch, I am an M-14 fan. But then I went through boot camp with it and shot competition with it. I would prefer a pistol-gripped stock on it, but that would be easily fixed with an after-market item. I did not like the M-14 on full-auto, however. I own an HK-91 which I like very much.

In the bolt-action group I would prefer the Springfield. I just like the feel of it better than the 98K and the SMLE. Although I own a 98K and not a Springfield. Couldn't say no to a $50 rifle made in 1937 with all of the proper Wehrmacht cartouche marks and in very good condition.

For full-auto, depending on the ranges involved, I would take the AK-47 if shooting was 200M and closer (specifically the AKM with folding stock).

i own a springfield...great hunting rifle....i packed an M14 and so did many who walked point in Bco...prefering the knockdown power and reliability...i packed 8 extra magazines and more then a cupple hundred extra rounds of ammo.....i liked that i could barrow ammo from the 60mm guns...also could put out a full mag on full auto....may not have been the moste acuret but did put up enough fire power to get the squad/plt out of ambush more the a few times....

When I watched it yesterday the M1 was rated as number 4. Of course my thoughts are that it should be number 1, but that's just my opinion.
