When i was going through Comm school i kept hearing people tell me Billet beats Rank. Just wanted to check if this is true. <br />

In terms of like a PLT Sgt is in charge of his platoon not someone else...

Yes, in this case it does. Instructors are NCOs or SNCOs delegate authority to the class through billet leadership. This way junior Marines can manage themselves and learn about leadership. NCO's attending the class will manage the class from the distant to make sure junior Marines in the leadership billet are doing their jobs and not abusing their authority. To blow someone in that position off is a bad idea. If you have issues, bring it up to your instructors.

Way back when... the Army had spec4 thru spec6 rank. They still have spec4's . Anyway a corporal out ranked a spec6 even though he collected a smaller pay check.

Billet over rank is a by direction of authority. When we evacuated the Philippines in 91, we set up in the Mackinac island off of Cebu. Our Camp Commander was our Sergeant Major, by direction of the Commanding Officer. He could set liberty hours and what ever policy he felt needed, within his authority. If he said no liberty, then it didn't matter what rank you were, no liberty.

As long as it's within the the direction of the Superior Officer/SNCO/NCO who lawfully granted him his authority. What he tells you is the same thing as if you were given a direct/lawful order from said Officer/SNCO/NCO.

Anyway a corporal out ranked a spec6 even though he collected a smaller pay check. If I remember this correctly, this came up during a court martial during the 2nd war with Iraq. Specialists are not NCO's and therefore cannot give a lawful order. That's one of the biggest differences between the Army and the Marines, we have leaders, real leaders who are held accountable for their actions. Not a bunch of fake wannabe's.
