If LSU is ever going to get a 4th National Championship, this is the year. After the debacle with Jeffersion being arrested for a bar fight, I though the Tigers had lost their edge in the quest for another BCS title. I had serious doubts about Jarrett Lee's abilities to lead this team. It's typical of the SEC to be filled with giants of the gridiron, but it seems Lee's slingshot arm may be a giant killer. I have been happily proven wrong about his abilities and maybe, just maybe, a new ring is in store for the LSU Tigers.

Jarrett Lee threw three touchdown passes, Michael Ford ran for two scores and No. 2 LSU made a case to be No. 1, beating No. 16 West Virginia 47-21 Saturday night.
The Tigers (4-0) converted two turnovers into scores, built a big early lead and withstood West Virginia's strong comeback for its third win over a ranked opponent this season, with all of three coming away from home. Every win so far has been by double digits.
Lee's three TD passes tied a career high and matched his output of the three previous games. He finished 16 of 28 for 180 yards.
West Virginia (3-1) outgained LSU 533-366. West Virginia's Geno Smith set school records for completions (38), attempts (65) and passing yards (463). But he was intercepted twice after making one in the previous three games.
For the second straight year, the Mountaineers (3-1) couldn't overcome a double-digit halftime deficit to the Tigers.
And West Virginia couldn't pad its resume with a win over a Southeastern Conference opponent at a time when there's been speculation the SEC might be interested in the Mountaineers as a 14th school. Texas A&M is set become the 13th member when it leaves the Big 12 next season.
West Virginia hadn't given up this many points at home since a 46-44 triple-overtime win over Louisville in 2005.
Pinned deep by superb punting from Brad Wing, who averaged 49 yards on six kicks, West Virginia time after time stared at needing to drive the length of the field. The Mountaineers started six possessions inside their 15.
West Virginia hoped to get off to a fast start, but for the third time this season, that didn't happen.
LSU jumped ahead to stay with the help of two first-quarter turnovers and consistently won the battle of field position.
Just before halftime, Tyrann Mathieu batted a pass into the air, caught it at the West Virginia 17 and ran to the 1. Lee found Chase Clement in the end zone two plays later to put the Tigers ahead 27-7. Lee also had first-half scoring tosses of 11 yards to Rueben Randle and 52 yards to Odell Beckham.
But LSU missed a field goal and punted twice on its first three possessions after halftime, giving West Virginia a chance to close the gap.
Smith found tight end Tyler Urban from 12 yards out to cap an 80-yard drive on West Virginia's first possession of the third quarter, then found Austin on a 72-yard pass play on the next series to set up Dustin Garrison's 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 27-21 late in the third.
But Morris Claiborne returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, breaking two tackles along the way, to put LSU ahead by double digits to stay.
Smith broke Mark Bulger's school records of 34 completions and 429 passing yards set against Missouri in the 1998 Insight.com Bowl. Gerald Fisher held the previous mark of 57 pass attempts against Maryland in 1951.
Austin caught 11 passes for 187 yards for the Mountaineers.
The new polls are out this morning. In the AP poll, it seems Oklahoma has lost their No.1 ranking to LSU.

Read where the swamp folks think Nick was a traitor? Let's see; he left swamp land went to the beach,and two years later received at the time the largest football coach paycheck in history for going to the hills of Bama. Hell, he would have been an idiot if he hadn't went.

Look sports rivals are fun with some smack talking.

But here is what some of the die hard extreme sports fans need to think about. I have seen too many fist fights start over my team is better than yours an you suck cuase your team is this.

Its a game, some one wins an someone loses.

Dont get mad when your team makes a mistake. You are sitting either in the stand or at home an not the one playing.

At the end of the game shake hands an be respectful if you win or loose. Its called good sportsmanship has something about setting a good example an respect that is lacking today in sports.

Not starting riots, beating up other fans of other teams ect.
Its a game get over it your not the one playing they are an someone else is coaching not you. If you had the skills then you would be either coach or a player.

Man I am going to hate it if I ened up at OSU an have to deal with the retard sports fans that have no sense.

Anyway good luck on your guys teams an may the best team win.

For what reason? Nick didn't leave LSU to go to Bama; he left and went to Florida. How does that figure into the hate for him? Frankly, it was a smart business move, and coaching is a business, on his part.

Come November 5th; we'll welcome the Tigers to the BEAR DEN,and send them home as pussy cats. LSU Tiger wannabees.

Some people have loyality issues to thier team an some are very extreme in thier love for a team were rational thinking is no longer an option.

A friend of mine is dating a guy who is a die hard extreme OSU fan. he refuses to talk to an meet her grandparents becuase they live in Michigan.
Dont ya think that is a some what dumb an idiotic? The kicker is he has never gone to OSU or any live games so more or less he is just a poser.

The Bama/LSU game will be good, regardless of the outcome. If Bama get's beat, I'll hate it, but I'll be in the stands rooting to the last play.

Now, the Bama/Auburn game is a different story. I'll drown my sorrows if we lose with Gin. Those are the Tigers I have no use for. Just kidding; it's a game, but it means whether we have a complete season or not.

Warbyrd,, it's the same problem us ol salts have been discussing. Old vs new, it just ain't like it used to be.
It's called "sportsmanship". Talking trash is fun, makes for a more interesting game, and can instill respect for each other if after the game you can shake hands, smile and say "next time buddy, next time", and mean it. I've been doing this thread for about 12 years in a variety of community forums. I have a photo, graphic, or come back for just about anything someone can throw at me, and if I don't, I can photoshop up one in just a few seconds. In all those years I have ran across very few of the type your talking about. Guess it's because I hang with the ole farts, who understand that sportsmanship is just another name for Honor. My tat says "Death Before Dishonor USMC", and I mean every word of it.

Mitch,,,,I guess the hate thing by Tiger fans would be like if your wife ran off with Bill Gates. You’d hate it but kinda understand, money, and prestige of being married to a billionaire. Then say she divorced him, and married your biggest rival and archenemy after only two years of abandoning you. Now that would suck and really **** you off, at least it did us.

I love every SEC team, I believe we are the best Conference in the U.S. Since 1998 there has been seven SEC teams in the title game with seven wins. I actually have always like Bama, especially when Bear was there. It’s just some people with the teams that I don't like, Saban is one, and Timmy boy Tebow is another. Don’t know if you saw it, but in one game Timmy boy held out his palm and mimicked writhing on it. It was some of that paper Tiger bull**** of his, then we handed his ass to him and beat the **** of them. He had never shown or had any respect for us.

But if Bama goes to Atlanta instead of us, I’ll be screaming “Roll Tide, roll SEC West!” The same if they go to the BCS Championship game, just like I did in 09 against Texas.

Now my daughter is a little different about them, she just hates them because her dope headed mother is from there and is a big Bama fan.
I raised her right as a single parent, she shoots, fishes, camps out, canoes, loves boxing, and like her ol daddy, is a LSU and Saints nut. No question she was raised by a Marine. But the Bama thing is one I couldn’t change, lol.

Good luck and may the best SEC West team get to represent the Conference in the big game. Having said that,,,,,,:p

Still too early in the season to be talking about a particular team winning a championship. Starters get hurt (ask UT about their star receiver) and some even get arrested.

I do hope the SEC keeps its streak of national championships alive; if that can't happen, at least don't let a Big 10 team win it!

Thanks for the post. I kinda understand where you're coming from and the anaolgy you used. However, if my wife left me for my rival and archenemy; I'd laugh my ass off, because in my opinion she would have gotten what she deserved, and he as well.

Like you, I love every SEC team, including Auburn, except one re; Ole Miss, and I'm from and live in Mississippi. The conference will get even better, IMO, now that Texas A&M will be in the conference.

Mentioning Coach Bryant. I did business with him beginning in 1972, and continued to do so until his death. He was a tough, gruff, business person, but had a pure gold heart, and very honest in his dealings.. I have several things that he gave me that I treasure.

If we don't make it to the SEC dance, and you do; I'll root for the Tigers.

If we don’t make to Atlanta I’m hoping Bama does. Ole Miss has never been and I can’t say that bothers me much. Mama and Daddy were big LSU fans, but mama also pulled for the Vols and Rebels due to the Manning boys being there.

Let’s all hope for no injuries to key players Top.
At LSU with Jefferson gone, if Jarrett Lee gets injured, were done.

I’m hoping the PAC 12 doesn’t make to the big game. . No love lost here with that bunch of liberal “gnarly dudes” at USC.

Police: LSU fans attacked following W.Va. game
MORGANTOWN, WV (FOX44) — An attack after the WVU versus LSU football game in West Virginia sent one LSU fan to the hospital, while three others recover from minior injuries, Fox 44 reports.

The Morgantown Police Department confirms that the victims were in a vehicle leaving the game when an unknown person threw a rock at the open window of the victim’s car. The driver of the vehicle got out of the car and began asking a group of people nearby if they knew who threw the rock at the vehicle.

While seeking information, the LSU fans were approached by an unidentified group of individuals. They began assaulting the driver. That’s when the victim’s wife (who is pregnant) and two friends got out of the car. They too were assaulted.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the most seriously injured LSU fan sustained a broken nose, a crushed eye socket and other injuries.He was taken to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for surgery.

The other victims in the attack only suffered minor injures.

An investigation is being conducted. The police request's that if anyone has information about the attack, call (304) 284-7454.

New South Carolina Uniforms: “Wounded Warrior” by Under Armour

Under Armour created a new uniform for the South Carolina Gamecocks to be worn on Oct. 1 against Auburn, a way of honoring our nation’s Wounded Warriors. The design is similar to what South Carolina wore against Florida in 2009 where the player’s last names are replaced with inspirational words like HONOR, COURAGE, etc. The usual block C on the helmet will be filled in with the camo-based print instead of black. Nation's top two teams meet in SEC's biggest game of the year.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In what has become a highly anticipated matchup, the top two teams in college football will square off on the gridiron on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium when No. 1 LSU takes on No. 2 Alabama at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Both teams boast overall records of 8-0, including 5-0 league marks, and both are coming off bye weeks heading into the marquee matchup. Saturday’s game marks the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 regular-season matchup in Southeastern Conference history and it is the first during the regular season in college football since Michigan and Ohio State faced one another in November 2006.

It is the third time that these two teams will meet with undefeated records, as the same feat occurred in both 1972 and 1973. The Tigers are 8-0 for the first time since that 1973 campaign and just the fourth time in school history. LSU also won its first eight games in 1908, 1958 and 1973. In 480 minutes of action this year, the Tigers have trailed for just six minutes and 33 seconds.

“We're rounding into the back end of the week and we've had a good week of work,” LSU head coach Les Miles said. “Our guys have practiced hard putting in the game plan. I told the team that I wanted them to prepare their thoughts at practice today and make sure that they practice how they plan to play on Saturday. It was like a rehearsal.”

Alabama is currently leading the SEC in total offense and total defense as well as scoring offense and scoring defense. The Crimson Tide averages 457.6 yards per game, while limiting opponents to 180.5 yards per outing. Additionally, Alabama scores nearly 40 points per game at 39.4, and at the same time, holds teams to a league, and nation, low of 6.9 points per game.

“We have had a pretty good week this week,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. “I think the players have been able to stay focused on the things we have tried to emphasize each day and really tried to keep their routine pretty constant. I think it is critical in games like this, that from this time on, the mental practice, focus and preparation are really important in terms of being able to play well and being ready to play when the game comes.”

THE HISTORY

A LOOK AT THE LAST MEETING
DeAngelo Peterson ran 23 yards with a reverse on fourth-and-one to set up Stevan Ridley’s go-ahead one-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to give No. 12 LSU a 24-21 upset against No. 5 Alabama at Tiger Stadium. Alabama, which led 7-3 at halftime, lost for just the second time in 23 games. Crimson Tide senior quarterback Greg McElroy finished the game 21-of-34 for 223 yards and two touchdowns while junior Mark Ingram ran the ball 21 times for 97 yards and a touchdown. LSU led the game in total offense 433-325.

PLAYMAKERS – OFFENSE

LSU – Jarrett Lee, Sr., QB
Lee leads the SEC and ranks 13th nationally in passing efficiency at 157.4, completing 98-of-155 passes for 1,250 yards with 13 touchdowns and one interception. He currently holds the lowest interception percentage (.650) of any quarterback in the top-30 nationally in passing efficiency. He has started each of LSU’s eight games this season, holding a 13-4 career record as the Tigers’ starting signal-caller. In 38 career games, has thrown for 3,893 yards and 31 TDs.

Alabama – Trent Richardson, Jr., RB
Richardson ranks in the top-seven nationally and leads the SEC with 123.62 yards per game and currently ranks 10th on the Alabama career rushing yard list with 2,440 yards. He is just the 16th Alabama running back to surpass 2,000 yards rushing in a career. He leads the Crimson Tide with 989 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. Richardson has a total of 18 touchdowns through eight games this season. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in six of his last seven games.

PLAYMAKERS – DEFENSE

Alabama – Dont’a Hightower, Jr., LB
Hightower leads Alabama with 48 total tackles on the year, including six tackles for loss, which ranks 21st in the SEC. He is one of 12 semifinalists for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award, given annually to the nation’s top college football lineman. Hightower finished with a squad-best eight tackles in his team’s last outing against Tennessee.

LSU – T-Bob Hebert, Sr., C/OG
Hebert is the Tigers’ most versatile offensive lineman, having seen action on 405 plays during the 2011 season with 57 knockdowns. He has started at left guard for much of the season before taking over in the Florida game on Oct. 8 at center.

· LSU is playing its fifth consecutive game as the nation’s No. 1 ranked team – the longest stretch since 1959. LSU is 18-3 all-time in games played as the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, which includes a 6-2 mark under Les Miles.

· Alabama has won its last nine games by 16 or more points dating back to last season’s Capital One Bowl victory over Michigan State. That nine-game streak surpassed the previous mark in the modern era of Crimson Tide football (since 1950).

With three weeks left in college football's regular season, No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Oklahoma State remain on a collision course to play in the Jan. 9 Allstate BCS National Championship game in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
But if the Tigers or Pokes (or both) fall in one of their final three games, which team is next in line to play for a national championship? The BCS picture became even more muddled this past weekend, with two previously unbeaten teams falling. Oregon blasted then-No. 4 Stanford 53-30 in Palo Alto, Calif., and TCU upset No. 5 Boise State 36-35 in Boise, Idaho after the Broncos missed a 39-yard field goal as time expired.
If Oklahoma State loses one of its last two games -- and with the way the Pokes have been playing lately, the entire argument might be moot -- the chances of LSU playing No. 3 Alabama or No. 4 Oregon again increases dramatically. No. 5 Oklahoma, which started the season ranked No. 1, is back in the BCS title hunt, too, after falling three weeks ago.
Which one-loss team is most deserving? Here's a closer look at the one-loss contenders:

Remaining games: vs. Georgia Southern on Saturday; at No. 24 Auburn on Nov. 26
Best argument for: The Crimson Tide went nose-to-nose with LSU for more than 60 minutes, losing on Tigers kicker Drew Alleman's 25-yard field goal in overtime. The Tide outgained the Tigers 295 to 239 yards in total offense, but missed four field goals.
Best argument against: Some voters might be reluctant to vote the Crimson Tide No. 2 in the final coaches' Top-25 poll or Harris Poll (which make up two-thirds of the BCS formula) because they wouldn't have won an SEC title. Unless LSU loses a game, Alabama won't be able to win the SEC West and play in the Dec. 3 SEC championship game in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. That argument was part of the reason LSU played for a BCS national championship in 2007, instead of Georgia, which didn't win the SEC East but finished No. 2 in the country.

Best argument for: The Ducks have won nine games in a row since losing to LSU in their opener at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Ducks were missing star cornerback Cliff Harris in the opener (he's indefinitely suspended from the team now) and his absence on punt returns was a big factor. Each of the Ducks' eight victories over FBS opponents were decided by 14 points or more and they've scored 34 points or more in all nine wins.
Best argument against: Oregon's high-powered offense was held in check in its past two games against SEC teams. The Ducks lost to Auburn 22-19 in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, despite gaining 449 yards of offense. The Ducks had 335 yards of offense and four turnovers against LSU in this season's opener. In Oregon's games against nonconference top-25 opponents during the last three seasons (against Boise State, Ohio State, Auburn and LSU), it scored nearly four touchdowns and averaged 200 yards of offense fewer than in its other games.

Best argument for: The Sooners have played arguably a more difficult schedule than the Crimson Tide and Ducks and have two impressive road victories: 23-13 at then-No. 5 Florida State on Sept. 17 and 58-17 at then-No. 8 Kansas State on Oct. 22. Since losing to Texas Tech, the Sooners defeated Kansas State and Texas A&M by a combined score of 99-42.
Best argument against: The Sooners have easily the worst loss among the one-loss contenders. Since ending OU's 39-game home winning streak, the Red Raiders have lost to Iowa State, Texas and Oklahoma State by a combined score of 159-33. The Sooners also lost leading rusher Dominique Whaley (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/502612/dominique-whaley) and star receiver Ryan Broyles (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/232171/ryan-broyles) to season-ending injuries.

Arkansas Razorbacks (http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/8/arkansas-razorbacks)

Record: 9-1, 5-1 SEC
BCS ranking: 6
Combined record of defeated FBS opponents: 33-46
Wins over ranked teams (when Arkansas played them): 3
Wins over FBS teams with current. 500 or losing record: 6
Best victory: 44-28 over then-No. 9 South Carolina on Nov. 5
Only loss: 38-14 at Alabama on Sept. 24
Remaining games: vs. Mississippi State on Saturday; at LSU on Nov. 25
Best argument for: For Arkansas to reach the BCS National Championship Game, the Razorbacks would have to defeat No. 1 LSU on the road on Nov. 25. A victory over LSU would give the Hogs two victories over top-10 SEC foes, having already defeated South Carolina.
Best argument against: The Razorbacks are only the third-best team in the SEC West and beating LSU might not even be enough to win the SEC West. If LSU loses to Arkansas, and the Razorbacks and Crimson Tide both win out, there would be a three-way tie for the SEC West title. Since Arkansas and Alabama would probably be within five spots of each other in the BCS standings, the Tide would win a tiebreaker based on head-to-head results.

Clemson also would have to defeat No. 12 South Carolina and possibly No. 8 Virginia Tech in the ACC championship game.
Best argument against: The Tigers' loss at Georgia Tech was ugly, as the Yellow Jackets piled up 383 rushing yards and forced four turnovers. The Tigers gave up 45 points to Maryland and 38 points to North Carolina, but won both games. Clemson needed a last-second field goal to defeat 5-5 Wake Forest 31-28 on Saturday.

Best argument against: The Hokies played a pretty soft nonconference schedule, defeating East Carolina, Arkansas State and Marshall. They've defeated only one ACC team with a winning record -- Georgia Tech -- and didn't play Florida State during the regular season.

Best argument against: The Broncos have defeated only one ranked team all season, beating Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta's Georgia Dome. Boise State had absolutely no room for error because of its schedule and lost a game on a missed field goal for the second season in a row.

• Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/480210/aaron-murray) is a big reason for the Dawgs' late-season resurgence, throwing nine touchdowns in the past two games. Murray completed 14 of 18 passes for 224 yards with four touchdowns in Georgia's 45-7 rout of Auburn at Sanford Stadium on Saturday. With 27 touchdown passes, Murray, a sophomore from Tampa, Fla., broke UGA's single-season record for touchdowns in a season.

• Boise State's loss might have ended Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/232560/kellen-moore)'s Heisman Trophy hopes, and Stanford's loss put a serious dent in quarterback Andrew Luck (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/380470/andrew-luck)'s chances of winning the hardware. It's hard to ignore Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/235677/brandon-weeden) any longer. Weeden completed 31 of 37 passes for 423 yards with five touchdowns in less than three quarters of the Pokes' 66-6 victory at Texas Tech. In leading OSU to a 10-0 record, Weeden has completed 73.1 percent of his passes for 3,635 yards with 31 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
• Vanderbilt is 5-5 and one victory away from becoming bowl eligible after blasting Kentucky 38-8 on Saturday. The Commodores play at Tennessee on Saturday and at Wake Forest on Nov. 26. Quarterback Jordan Rodgers (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/500561/jordan-rodgers), the younger brother of Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers, completed 12 of 22 passes for 207 yards with two touchdowns, and tailback Zac Stacy (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/483439/zac-stacy) ran for 135 yards with three touchdowns against the Wildcats.
• Faulkner University defeated Union (Ky.) College 95-89 in triple overtime in Montgomery, Ala., on Saturday, breaking an NAIA record with 184 points in the game. The total surpassed the previous mark of 141 set in 1994 and was the second-highest scoring game in college football history, only outdone by Georgia Tech's famous 222-0 victory over Cumberland in 1916. Faulker set an NAIA record with 14 touchdowns and quarterback Josh Hollingsworth threw for an NAIA-record 637 yards with seven touchdown passes and one scoring reception.
• Navy didn't complete a single pass in its 24-17 victory over SMU on Saturday. The Midshipmen, who ran for 335 yards in the game, improved to 4-6 and will play in the Military Bowl if they defeat San Jose State and Army in their last two games. Navy has completed only 55 passes all season and completed more than seven passes in a game only once this season.
Off the Mark

• How costly was Boise State's loss to TCU? It could cost the Mountain West Conference around $8 million or more if none of its teams are selected for a BCS bowl game. Since MWC member TCU played in the Rose Bowl last season, the MWC received $12.75 million from the five non-AQ league's BCS share of $24.7 million. The five other non-AQ leagues (Conference USA, Mid-American, Sun Belt and WAC) each received around $4 million or less. If TCU wins the MWC, the Horned Frogs will play in the Las Vegas Bowl and the Broncos will play in the Poinsettia Bowl, which has a payout of $500,000.
• You can't blame Georgia Tech's Jeremiah Attaochu for the Yellow Jackets' loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday night. But Attachou's inexplicable decision to throw a punch after sacking quarterback Logan Thomas (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/480239/logan-thomas) definitely changed momentum. After sacking Thomas for a two-yard loss on third-and-19 from the Hokies' 17, the Yellow Jackets were penalized 15 yards. The Hokies scored a touchdown five plays later and outgained the Yellow Jackets 151 yards to one yard in total offense the rest of the way.
• It's hard to believe Texas A&M did it again. The Aggies blew a 31-21 lead in the fourth quarter and lost 53-50 in four overtimes at Kansas State on Saturday. If games ended at halftime, the Aggies would be 8-1-1 this season. Intead, they've blown second-half leads in four of their five losses.
• NC State held Boston College to minus-2 yards of offense in the second half, but somehow lost to the Eagles, 14-10. NC State quarterback Mike Glennon (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/381967/mike-glennon) threw an interception in BC's end zone and then threw incomplete on fourth-and-5 at the BC 27 with 1:10 to go.

I really enjoy this thread. I'm a Big 12 guy and a huge Oklahoma Sooner fan, but I like enjoy watching SEC football and the way those teams get after it. Anyway I'm rooting for anarchy so maybe my Sooners can get a title shot. I think the best hope is to win out, beat the Cowboys and hope that the voters aren't up for rematches in a title game. Man that Texas Tech loss is just ugly when compared to the losses of the other 1-loss teams.

I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread. How do most SEC fans feel about getting Texas A&M and Missouri from the Big 12. Do you guys like it, or do you just wish they would have stayed where they were at?

I've been an Alabama fan and SEC fan since birth. Im excited to have TAMU not as much Mizzou cause I feel like the SEC could have got a better school. But Im excited to have more of the Texas recruiting market now with A&M. I've always liked A&M and they would have to have been my favorite team in the Big 12.

I'm glad you enjoy the thread, now if I could just get more SEC team fans to post; I've promised that Mike won't bite; he gets fed regularly every Saturday. But,, I understand how the intimidation of LSU would keep em quite.

I agree with BA on this one,,,, not so much Missouri, I would of rather seen West Virginiaa but that's all moot now.

I too have been a SEC and LSU fan since birth. At Death Valley, the Istrouma Area Council Boy Scouts are the ushers, then they find a spot on the steps and watch the game. I was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout (Eagle Scout), then in the Explorers. I got to attend all of LSU's home games for many years. They let us walk across the field to the exit at the end of the game. I used to love to go to the center of it an just stand for a few moments and take it all in.
Now you guys, and gals (Linda), know why I love LSU so much. That and I'm way down here in Tiger Land.

Ughhh. What a terrible weekend for the Big 12. The SEC clearly sits on the top of the college football world again. I enjoyed the first game between LSU and Alabama, but I really don't want a re-match in a BCS title game... Not to mention, what happens if Arkansas beats LSU. Holy crap, this is making my brain hurt.

I'm just praying the Sooner defense shows up this week against Iowa St. They can still win the Big 12 if they beat the Cyclones and then beat Ok. State in Bedlam the following week. It just ticks me off because with Oregon losing it was all there in front of them, even with the Texas Tech loss.

If Arkansas does beat LSU, how do they decide who represents the west against Georgia? I know when we had a 3-way tie in the Big 12 South a couple of years ago they used the BCS standings.

Yep, they will use the BCS standings, but LSU won't have to worry about that after today, will they Linda?
The Hogs do have a record of upsetting us, as in 07 in a triple OT game, 50/48 Arkansas, but we still went on to play and win the National Title. No doubt it's going to be a damn good game.
And as usual, the BCS standings is top heavy with SEC teams.

Well, I'm hoping for a re-match of LSU & BAMA. Some folks don't want to see it happen, but the SEC needs a clear Champion to settle who is the best. Otherwise, there will alway's be doubt. If LSU wins, then they deserve it.

Sooo the way I see it is; "WE beat Bama in their house" good enough for me, we don't have a thing to prove by giving them a rematch.

LSU and Bama is an even match,,,, even match goes to us for the above statement.

Ah Contraire; If there were no re-match's in sports; there would be no sports! Re-match's occur in every sport that I know of; so why shouldn't there be one between the number 1 & 2 college football teams.

So who should LSU play if they don't lose a game this year? I would think that they would want to play the next highest ranked team, but then again they may want to play a less ranked team, so they can go undefeated.

I thought the object was for the two(2) highest ranked teams to play each other for the National Championship, but I guess you feel that since both top ranked teams are in the SEC, and LSU beat Bama during the regular season, that they shouldn't play each other for a National Championship.

Let's see. The National Championship for College Basketball is often played between teams in the same conference, and the same teams play each other during the regular season. Some of the greatest games are between UNC and Duke, and they are in the same conference re; ACC and they both reside within 25 miles of each other.

Let's see. The latest re; Championship for sports was the NASCAR Championship, and it was decided between the #1 & #2 Teams, and these teams race each other 36 times a year.

Jamie, give me a reason why LSU and Bama shouldn't play again, other than their records this year, in which a regular season game was won by LSU in overtime.

Actually my friend, being top of the pile and mostly above it all, I'm fairly neutral as I believe we can beat whomever. I was just picking at ya. Most polls have a slight edge to Houston.:)

All of the glorious, wondrous chaos (http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/20/bcs-shakeup-reaches-defcon-2-proportions/) that has transpired over the past 24 hours has caused us to change the tack we normally take in our weekly poll.
As one of the two remaining unbeatens, LSU, as they have been for quite a number of weeks, is the clear-cut and unquestioned No. 1 team in the country. Thus, a normal “Who is the No. 1 team in the country?” poll officially ceases to make sense. So, instead, the direction we’re headed with the Week 12 poll is this: if LSU beats No. 6 Arkansas next week and hands the Hogs their second loss and then goes on to beat No. 13 Georgia in the SEC championship game, who would you want to see the Bayou Bengals play for the BcS title?
Let the questions begin, armed with the assumption that all of the following teams win their remaining games…
Would you want to see a rematch with No. 3 Alabama, which wouldn’t even win its own division let alone its conference? How about No. 8 Stanford, which would probably be in the same non-winning division and conference boat as the Tide? Like the Cardinal, No. 10 Boise State lost to a two-loss team at home; would you want to see the team that everybody either loves to love or loves to hate get a crack at the crystal? Despite the soul-crushing loss Friday night, No. 2 Oklahoma State still has just one loss and would certainly be a huge part of the discussion in this scenario as well.
Or, what about No. 9 Virginia Tech? As it stands at this moment, the Hokies are the only other team from a BcS conference with one loss; would Tech deserve a spot opposite LSU in New Orleans?
And then there’s No. 11 Houston. The Cougars are the only other unbeaten Div. 1-A team left in this up-is-down, right-is-left 2011 season. In their past six games, UH has won by an average of 42.6 points. On the flip side, their opponents in those games are just a combined 23-41, including a 3-11 mark against teams from BcS conferences. Is that a résumé deserving of a spot in the title game?
(Don’t even get me started on the following scenario that is entirely possible and, worse yet, very plausible: LSU and Houston are undefeated; Boise State has one loss; and every other team in the country has at least two losses.)
OK, there’s your premise. Now, go vote before your head implodes over all of the possibilities.

I realize and admit the Tigers are a good team, either wet or dry, but to run away from a re-match with Bama would be a travisty. They should be jumping at the chance to prove once again how good they are. Sure they could play a lesser ranked team, and beat them, but the question remains> Could they beat Bama again?

LSU takes down Georgia 42-10
Despite an inept first half, LSU wore down the Bulldogs before finding their stride in a big win.

ATLANTA — LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne reminded me very much of a 2-year-old Saturday. This is a compliment, I promise.

He flashed all of the best parts of that age, none of the bad ones.

Anybody who has studied the behavior patterns of 2-year-olds through the lens of parenthood knows they live in the moment. Anger looks like anger, joy like joy. They are years away from reacting how they think they should or dimming their enthusiasm lest anybody be watching. Next year, next week, two minutes from now matter not to them.

This was Claiborne in the immediate aftermath of LSU's 42-10 victory over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday. He was leaping and chest bumping and giggling and smiling.

"It is good to be a Tiger," he yelled to no one in particular as the streamers fell from the ceiling at The Georgia Dome.

There was no solemn talk of "one more." He was enjoying this moment. He seemed to grasp that not everybody goes undefeated through the college football in general and the SEC in particular, hardly anybody does actually. He had just accomplished something fabulous, with his closest friends, and he wanted to celebrate.

"We're a big family. I know everybody says that, right?" Claiborne told me later.

"You cannot know unless you are here on a day-to-day basis, but these guys are close. Does it sound silly to say 'brothers?' Well, that is what it is. You sweat and bleed and cry and just are together, starting in the summer, all to do this together. And yes, that means something."

So much of the last couple of weeks has been spent talking about how meaningless this SEC championship game was, endlessly debating who the second-best team in college football is, arguing about who is worthy of playing LSU in the national championship game, ridiculing a BCS system for its inanity.

I am guilty of this. Possibly, I am more guilty than most.

The system is indeed broken. It is fatally flawed. One of its biggest failures, though, is that it manages to somehow overshadow what LSU has accomplished this season. Because lost amid all of this chaos of who has to take on the Tigers is the absurdity of how good they really are.

They might be the most perfect team. They have possibly the country's best player in cornerback Tyrann Mathieu. The perfection was born from blending their talent and their flaws, from taking their mistakes and problems and suspensions, and growing stronger, from coming together into this seemingly unstoppable team.

"I think we can stop us," Mathieu said, amid answering questions about being named SEC Championship Game MVP.

"I think we made a lot of bad decisions, personal mistakes, but we corrected it. We never gave up on each other. As everything was going on, I definitely think we grew closer. We started to believe in our coaches more. We started to definitely come closer within the locker room. So I think the leaders definitely started to stand up, and hats off to our leaders."

If LSU has a flaw now, it is that it lacks a great quarterback or even a good one. That the Tigers have won without one makes how they play even more impressive. Oppressive is the best adjective to describe them. They are like a chisel that settles in and applies full weight to a rock until whatever it started out as crumbles.

A quick word about Georgia. The Bulldogs did not quit. They certainly did not come into this game to be just another date on LSU's tour. They fought. Coach Mark Richt attacked. The Zombie Coach, as I like to call him, because you cannot kill him no matter how hard a few Bulldogs fans have tried, called onside kicks, took chances, went deep and had his team beating LSU through most of first half.

They did not quit so much as they were worn down.

Saturday's result was the simple math of what happens when a good team faces a great one. It was only a matter of time.

And when that time came, of course, it was Mathieu with the ball. He fielded a punt a little more than halfway through the second quarter with LSU trailing 10-0. One missed tackle and it was end zone and 10-7.

"It's so hard for us in this conference, in really just a segment of college football, to give an overview," Tigers coach Les Miles said as a disclaimer when asked the Heisman question about Mathieu.

"But I can tell you this, as the conference champions of the SEC and as one of the key players on that team, I think he needs real consideration. I think he's a special player and has a special place and maybe warrants, if the judges can make a quality decision, for him to attend in New York"

Having seen Mathieu live and in person against Oregon, Alabama and now Georgia, I have no doubt he deserves to be in New York as a Heisman contender. He along with Baylor's Robert Griffin III and Stanford's Andrew Luck represent the very best of college football this season.

Mathieu's second punt return, the one not for a touchdown, was ridiculous in how long it seemed to go on.

"I actually think the one he didn't score on was, maybe, the most amazing return I have seen in my life," LSU guard Bob Hebert rightly noted. "It was one of those things that every time you thought he was caught he would slip out and keep going again and change direction in the most unexpected way. I have never seen anything like it."
The first one, though, is what won LSU the game. It was church from there.

That is probably disingenuous to say since LSU never felt out of this game.

Even when Georgia's defense was dominating and LSU had failed to get a first down, you knew the Tigers were going to win. This was a team that had overcome a beast of a schedule, starting with Oregon and including beating 'Bama in Tuscaloosa. The Tigers had to overcome themselves because it seemed they were always getting in their own way —quarterback Jordan Jefferson's suspension and the loss of Mathieu for a game for doing what college kids do.

They are too, good. In the end, they could not even beat themselves.

And as a reward for being this good, they get to hear everybody whine about how stupid a rematch with Alabama is, how the States — Oklahoma and Boise —got screwed, how Stanford deserved a chance, how a playoff is needed, how screwed up the system actually is.

All of this is true, except for maybe the 'Bama part. Do not blame them from benefiting from this crazy system. Saturday was just not the day for any of it.

Saturday, as Claiborne reminded me, was about the joy of doing something amazing with your best friends.

Saturday was about hard work and perseverance and screwing up and redemption. Saturday was about the best team in college football, hands down. And it is a screwed up system that overshadows that with its absurdity.

STILLWATER, Okla. — This is why a system with no flexibility should not be allowed to determine the national champion. This underscores how computers can't see past the data to the facts behind them. This is why Alabama should be, if not eliminated from the national championship race, at a minimum given no better chance than Oklahoma State.

That's because, in No. 3 Oklahoma State's 44-10 destruction of rival and No. 10 Oklahoma on Saturday night, there was more at play than a big win.

There was a bright-lights, big-stage reminder that the world is a wildly complicated place — a place where the Cowboys lost their only game on a day in which the entire university for which they compete was in deep mourning, a place where, despite that loss to Iowa State, they still have beaten more than twice as many current BCS top 25 teams as Alabama.

It was the best performance of the year by a college football team not named LSU.

"They had their shot," Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said afterward. "Give us ours."

Is it fair that Oklahoma State should be deprived a shot at LSU, the undefeated powerhouse and the only route through which anyone else can crown themselves champions? Not in the least. Is it fair, then, that Alabama should surrender that right, having lost its only game of the season to LSU by a mere three points, in overtime no less? Nope, that's not fair, either.

Perhaps this is the only way in which the BCS accurately reflects the world we live in: Sometimes the world is a very unfair place.

And so a choice must be made. And that choice should be a national championship game featuring LSU's frighteningly stifling defense against Oklahoma State's high-tempo offense.

"I don't know what will happen," Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops said afterward, "but I know I'll vote LSU No. 1 and Oklahoma State No. 2."

Oklahoma State won its conference outright. Alabama did not. Alabama had its shot against LSU and lost, despite having home-field advantage. Oklahoma State hasn't had that chance yet. Including Saturday's victory, Oklahoma State has beaten five current BCS top 25 teams: Oklahoma (10), Kansas State (11), Baylor (17), Texas (22) and Missouri (25). Alabama has defeated just two: Arkansas (8) and Penn State (22).

Sorry, 'Bama, the short stick should be yours. Gundy and Stoops are right. You had your shot at LSU and you lost. You should be out. It's as unfair as anything out there — other than not letting Oklahoma State have a crack at the Tigers too.

An important element of the argument for letting Gundy and his Cowboys leapfrog Nick Saban's Crimson Tide is a human element worthy of reflection even if, based on how they assess these things, few computers or voting sports writers have taken note.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, a plane carrying Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna crashed in Arkansas, killing them and two others. This for a school that almost 11 years earlier had lost players and coaches from the men's basketball team in a plane crash in Colorado.

Human beings mourn. They sap emotional energy when they do so, and they confront and process tragedy — whether tragedy inflicted on friends or on their community — in ways that are hard for those to see who focus only on the numbers or the field.

One night after the crash, the Cowboys football team raced to a 24-7 lead on the road against Iowa State and then … fizzled.

Iowa State won in double overtime.

There is no way to measure the impact of something like what happened, but we know this: When a close-knit community, like a university, experiences death on a scale so personal and so unfair, it can strike home in unexpected ways.

There were other factors, too, those much less important but still relevant in a conversation bout football. Gundy pointed out Saturday that his team (ah-hem, Alabama) "didn't lose at home." The Cowboys' loss was a Friday game and thus a short week to prepare.

These aren't excuses. They're facts. They don't erase the loss, or provide an excuse that makes Oklahoma State's national-title claims rock solid. But they put that loss in context. That defeat was a question mark, not a verdict. What happened Saturday against Oklahoma cleared up things.

Let this team take on LSU.

The Cowboys displayed a balance Saturday critics said did not exist, rushing for more yards (278) than they had in the air (217). They displayed a defense critics said didn't exist, too, holding Oklahoma to just 10 points and 3.3 rushing yards per carry.

"Our defense was better than what people said," Gundy noted. "But there wasn't anything statistically that backed it up. I mentioned to them tonight was the night. I don't think there's any question that they showed up in a big way."

There's a lot here beyond the stats. Past the rankings, past the obsession with SEC football, past a loss to Iowa State, past ESPN's way-too-obvious craving to televise LSU-Alabama.

Past, even, the fact Gundy said last week that he would put Alabama ahead of his own team if forced to choose.

"People told me at the coffee shop, they were giving me a hard time for talking about the other schools last week," he said. "Oklahoma State hadn't earned the right to talk about a game past the conference championship game because we hadn't won a conference championship game. But after what they accomplished tonight, the way they did it against the No. 10 team in the country, I don't think there's a question they deserve an opportunity to play for it all."

He's right.

Let's finally say no to the knee-jerk reaction. To the pack mentality. To what we think we're supposed to proclaim. To what we know is the safe answer that'll make those of us not emotionally invested feel safe from criticism.

Let's say no to an SEC rematch and yes to one conference champion playing another conference champion for a national — note national, rather than SEC — championship.

Given the stupidity of the system under which we must work, Oklahoma State belongs in that game instead Alabama. If you don't like it, SEC or Alabama fans, help overthrow the system.

Until then, things as they stand remain wildly unfair, and that means your shot at winning it all should wait until next season.

Atlanta, Ga. -- Down 10-0 to Georgia late in the first half, many in the Georgia Dome wondered if LSU’s dream season was going to come to a crashing halt. But with 5:48 left in the second quarter, the Tigers answered the bell.

More accurately, Tyrann Mathieu answered the bell with an electrifying 62-yard punt return that cut the deficit to 10-7 at the half and turned the momentum the Tigers’ way.

“Obviously, we got off to a slow start,” Mathieu said. “So I just felt that I needed to change the momentum of the game. It was the perfect time with that punt return. Just trying to make one guy miss and just get up the field.”

“It took our team to rebound from a deficit to play,” LSU head coach Les Miles said. “I'm very proud of this team. This team down 14 and the target's on, down 10 to a very quality Georgia team, comes back and rebounds. Never are they out of it. They're a team that there's never any question that they were going to get their feet, get their bearings, and compete.”

The second half was all LSU, as the Tigers scored an SEC Championship Game-record 21 points in the third quarter on the back of freshman running back Kenny Hilliard to build a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 42-10 win over the Bulldogs.

Hilliard, listed fourth on the LSU depth chart, scored on runs of 15 and four yards in the first five minutes of the third, then pulled in a Jordan Jefferson swing pass and covered the remaining eight yards, shedding a defender along the way, at the 3:45 mark.

“Kenny made a couple of key cuts and some very key runs in that game,” Miles said. “It really looked like he had a hot hand and we didn't want to go away from him. He makes great cuts, and he's very physical. And that was that kind of game.”

Mathieu had four punt returns for a total of 119 yards and recovered an Aaron Murray fumble to become the first defensive player since Ellis Johnson of Florida in 1994 to be named the Most Valuable Player of the SEC Championship game.

Georgia started the game off hot, holding LSU to a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession and drove down the field to the LSU 17 yard line. From there, a false start penalty and a pass in the end zone through the hands of Tavarres King left the Bulldogs to settle for a 40-yard Blair Walsh field goal for the game’s initial score.

Mark Richt rolled the dice on the ensuing kickoff, calling an onside kick that the Bulldogs recovered at the UGA 49 yard line. A holding penalty set the Bulldogs back, but they still managed to again drive deep into LSU territory, reaching the 21 yard line. But a delay of game penalty on second down, followed by a pair of incomplete passes led to another Walsh field goal attempt. Walsh pushed the ball right from 45 yards out and the score remained 3-0.

The teams traded punts over the next three possessions before Georgia took over at the LSU 44. Carlton Thomas jumpstarted the drive with a 16-yard run on second down to the LSU 27. Three plays later, Murray hit Aron White across the middle for a 12-yard touchdown. Walsh’s extra point made it 10-0 Georgia with :42 left in the first quarter.

“I was proud of the way we started,” Richt said. “We missed a couple of opportunities for more points. Probably could have had 21 points in the first half if we just catch the football, but we're not able to do that.

Neither team could gain traction on offense in the second quarter, and Mathieu’s 62-yard punt return was the period’s only score.

“It certainly was a very tremendous play that Tyrann Mathieu made,” said Miles of the return. “It seemed to be a few more than just one guy he made miss.”

“When you play as hard as he does, good things do happen to you,” Richt said of Mathieu. “I'll be honest with you, I enjoy watching the guy play football other than what he plays against us, because when you do see a guy like that, you can appreciate it. There's something about him that he seems to find a way to do something special just about every game, and he did it again.”

For the LSU offense, it was a tale of two halves in every sense.

At halftime, the Tigers had 12 yards of total offense with no first downs and quarterback Jordan Jefferson had completed just two passes. The lack of production on offense led Miles to hint to CBS’s Tracy Wolfson in the halftime interview that senior Jarrett Lee could see action in the second half.

Georgia received the opening kick of the second half looking to expand the halftime advantage, but on the third play from scrimmage, quarterback Aaron Murray ran for what would have been a Georgia first down, but fumbled as he fell to the ground. Mathieu fell on the ball at the Georgia 26 and set up the Tigers to take their first lead of the game. A Georgia substitution infraction moved LSU to the 21 before a Reuban Randle six-yard reception set up Hilliard’s 15-yard score to put the Tigers in front.

The Bulldogs went three-and-out on their next possession and again punted to Matheiu, and he did not disappoint, weaving his way 47 yards to the UGA 17, setting up the Tigers with a short field again. Hilliard then left no doubt, covering the four yards over left guard for the touchdown.

Georgia was able to pick up a first down on its next drive, but an Aaron Murray pass deep down the right sideline was intercepted by Tharold Simon at the LSU 30. The Tigers then embarked on a drive that more than doubled their offensive yardage, covering 10 plays and 70 yards, capped by Hillard’s eight-yard catch for the score and a 28-10 lead after the PAT.

Alfred Blue added a 48-yard run with 6:17 left in the game and Morris Claiborne intercepted a Murray pass and returned it 45 yards for the game’s final score with 4:21 remaining.

But LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu is more than his famous nickname, a YouTube sensation that mimics his style of play.

As the second half opened, it didn’t take Mathieu long to make sure the momentum would stay in the Tigers’ corner. UGA quarterback Aaron Murray ran for what should have been a first down, but the ball popped free, with the “Honey Badger” there to pounce.

“Last night I envisioned me having three touchdowns,” Mathieu said. “I think I came close to that. What it came down to is me trying to do what I can for my team. I put the pressure on myself at times. It's just about me trying to shift the momentum and just put my team in the position to win the game.”

As for the nickname, Mathieu seems to be stuck with it thanks to a now famous video session with LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis.

“Coach Chavis showed me that video (of the honey badger) coming back from the West Virginia game,” he said. “I definitely thought it was entertaining. The narrator on there was definitely a funny guy. Me and my teammates love the name. I think it depicts me on the field, soo I just go with it. My teammates do a great job of having my back. Anything I can do for those guys to lift their spirit.”

Nickname: Fighting Tigers

Way back in the fall of 1896, coach A.W. Jeardeau's LSU football team posted a perfect 6-0-0 record, and it was in that pigskin campaign that LSU first adopted its nickname, Tigers.
'Tigers' seemed a logical choice since most collegiate teams in that year bore the names of ferocious animals, but the underlying reason why LSU chose 'Tigers' dates back to the Civil War.
During the 'War Between the States,' a battalion of Confederate soldiers comprised of New Orleans Zouaves and Donaldsonville Cannoneers distinguished themselves at the Battle of Shenandoah.
These Louisiana rebels had been known by their contemporaries as the fighting band of Louisiana Tigers. Thus when LSU football teams entered the gridiron battlefields in their fourth year of intercollegiate competition, they tagged themselves as the 'Tigers'.
It was the 1955 LSU 'fourth-quarter ball club' that helped the moniker 'Tigers' grow into the nickname, 'Fighting Tigers'.
Colors: Purple and Gold
There is some discrepancy in the origin of Royal Purple and Old Gold as LSU's official colors.
It is believed that those colors were worn for the first time by an LSU team in the spring of 1893 when the LSU baseball squad beat Tulane in the first intercollegiate contest played in any sport by Louisiana State University. Team captain E.B. Young reportedly hand-picked those colors for the LSU squad.
Later that year, the first football game was played. On November 25, 1893, football coach/chemistry professor Dr. Charles Coates and some of his players went into town to purchase ribbon to adorn their gray jerseys as they prepared to play the first LSU gridiron game.
Stores were stocking ribbons in the colors of Mardi Gras -- purple, gold and green. -- for the coming Carnival season. However, none of the green had yet arrived at Reymond's Store at the corner of Third and Main streets. Coates and quarterback Ruffin Pleasant bought up all of the purple and gold stock and made it into rosettes and badges.

Rematch hysteria aside, title game winner will be true national champ

On Jan. 9, LSU and Alabama will play for the national championship. Right now, most fans are focused on the controversy and dissatisfaction surrounding the BCS' first intra-division rematch, an awkward scenario that has sparked more indignation over college football's flawed and frustrating postseason. Expect the bellyaching to continue for the next several days.

At some point, however, perhaps the complaining will subside long enough for us to focus on an equally rare occurrence: Les Miles' team is one win away from completing the most spectacular season of the BCS era.

On Saturday, a nation already up to its ears in SEC adulation watched with incredulity as top-ranked LSU went the entire first half of its conference championship game against No. 12 Georgia without gaining a first down, falling behind 10-0. Fans in Ohio, Oklahoma, California, etc., rubbed their hands eagerly in anticipation of an 11th-hour meltdown, one almost certain to preclude the SEC rematch that ESPN and CBS had told them was already scheduled.

And then, the Tigers did what they always do. Tyrann Mathieu returned a punt 62 yards for a momentum-turning touchdown before halftime. Three plays into the second half, defensive lineman Michael Brockers forced an Aaron Murray fumble that the Honey Badger recovered. This just eight days after LSU spotted third-ranked Arkansas a 14-0 lead only to roar back and win 41-17.

LSU, 13-0, just completed the most impressive regular season I can remember. It beat the Pac-12 (Oregon) and Big East (West Virginia) champions within the first four weeks of the season by scores of 40-27 and 47-21, respectively. In the most hyped regular-season game in years, it went to Tuscaloosa and beat No. 2 Alabama in overtime. It beat five teams that finished in the Top 25 and three that finished in the top six, and it scored 40 or more points in nine of its 13 games. It is the first team ever to achieve a perfect 1.000 score (first place votes from every voter in two polls and six computers) in the BCS standings.

The Tigers are a certifiable juggernaut -- but they are not yet national champions, and they won't be unless they beat Alabama a second time. To many, that doesn't seem fair. I've made my case (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/stewart_mandel/12/03/oklahoma-state-bedlam-bcs/index.html) for why Oklahoma State deserved a shot over Alabama, but not enough voters agreed to erase a .0086 gap. So, that's that.

The funny thing is, sports fans seem to be perfectly fine with postseason rematches in almost any other scenario -- even ones where the result renders the entire preceding season meaningless. In 2007, the New England Patriots completed the NFL's first 16-0 regular season with a win on the final weekend against the New York Giants. Five weeks later the Giants, having lost six regular-season games, upset the still-perfect Patriots and got to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. It was hailed as an all-time classic.

The difference, of course, is that the Giants weren't given another shot at the Patriots by a set of voters and computers; they earned that shot by advancing in a playoff. College football is different. It's the one sport that continually trumpets the importance of its regular season and views the postseason as more of a celebration than competition. LSU-Alabama II makes a mockery of that talking point, asking us to accept that Every Game Counts -- but that this particular one merits a do-over.

Regardless of whether the rematch was the right choice, the Tigers will face a plenty worthy adversary in New Orleans, one that was similarly dominant outside of that Nov. 5 field-goal fest, albeit against a less staggering schedule.

And contrary to what some have already espoused, LSU needs to win the game to be considered national champion. Yes, the result in New Orleans will trump the result in Tuscaloosa. And no, AP voters should not grant the Tigers a split championship if they lose close in the rematch.

"The opportunity to go play for a national championship is a completely different scenario," Miles said Sunday night. "It's the same opponent, but with the title at stake."
No team in history has ever won a national title after losing its bowl game. This won't be the first.

Here's what will actually happen. We will spend the next few days on our annual tirade about this silly system and all the possible alternatives. (Note: If my desired plus-one were in place, LSU would play Stanford in one semifinal and Alabama would face Oklahoma State in the other. How hard was that?) We'll quiet down a bit in time to enjoy Christmas and the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, and then, when the Tigers and Tide get to New Orleans, 1,000 reporters will spend a week asking the coaches and players questions they don't want to answer about the fairness of a rematch.

And then they'll play the game. We'll be reminded of just how good these teams are. The game will play out completely differently than the first one. The score will not be close to 9-6. For one, the first meeting will have taken place more than two months earlier; for another, this is football.

"If you just look at NFL games, you always play teams in the playoffs you played in the regular season, and all those game play out differently," Nick Saban said Sunday night. "There's so many good players on both sides of the ball, I think there's a lot of opportunity for the game to have a completely different flavor than the first one did."

It also has an opportunity to be one of the all-time greats. People don't want to hear that right now, especially after enduring so much buildup to the first somewhat disappointing meeting. But it's true. Either LSU will cement itself as one of the great teams the sport has seen, or Alabama will redeem itself by proving the Tigers mortal.
Either way, one team will rightfully be crowned national champion.

First let me clear up any confusion, as I know some of you are going where the heck did this appear from? I asked our Moderator, Sgt. Lep, to move this to here so we could share with our family members and friends, like my buddy Mark.

Also want to say "not too shabby a year for the Bronco’s" Allen, but, it’s SEC us,,,again. ; - )

I created this SEC thread back in September in Marines Only the “Hooch” so we could possibly cut up and, maybe pass a good time with a little trash talk ;- ). I am referring to the good nature, sportsmanship type trash talk. It hasn’t been a problem for us as we know and understand that Sportsmanship is another word for Honor. As such I expect anyone who responds to show the same sportsmanship you wish shown to yourself.

Other than that, please kick back and enjoy the hype and build up to our beloved college football’s final battles of the titans.

LSU does belong in the national championship and Alabama is a great team but shouldn't they have to beat LSU twice to win the title after all they lost to LSU

Yes Mitch, it's "into the breach once again". This is a "must play" game in my mind. I know LSU got this call, and that there wasn't enough "irrefutable evidence" to overturn the call on the field, but I'm still not comfortable with it. IMHO a do over is in order. Only way to know for sure who is the "Nation Champions". We are both winners for making it this far, but history never remembers who lost, only who was the best damn Collage football team that year, maybe in the history of the BCS championship game.

It was everything it was billed to be...unless you like TDs. A final of 9-6 in overtime was not for fans of shootouts, but if you like tough, grind-it-out football, this was the best type of game for you.
Alabama made a boatload of mistakes, and LSU made big plays. None were bigger than this athletic and timely interception from sophomore safety Eric Reid.

He leaves his assignment, flows over to Alabama tight end Michael Williams and literally steals the ball from him on the 1-yard line. This was one of two interceptions in the game—the first was from junior CB Morris Claiborne.

This was still the biggest play of the game and further highlighted the mental lapses that costs Alabama the game. The pass was thrown by WR Marquise Maze on a trick play. The ball was lofted in the air with a ridiculous amount of hang time that allowed Reid to make the spectacular play on the ball.

All the missed field goals by "long-range kicking specialist" Cade Foster, one was blocked (that one was from the foot of "short-range kicking specialist" Jeremy Shelley) and ironically caught in the air by Reid as well. There was also a very poor choice of play-calling in the overtime session.

There were just too many miscues to overcome for the home-standing Crimson Tide. They will look back at many plays as well as this fabulous interception as plays they wish they could have back.

Nothing bad happened to college football Sunday. No tragedy befell the sport. Nobody died.

What happened was a system everybody knew to be flawed produced a predictably flawed result. A group of agenda-ized coaches, idiotic variations of Craig James' Harris ballots and computer programs determined that replaying a game already played was the best arbiter of who is the best team in college football.

This was always how this was going to go down. And despite a cacophony of Twitterage about LSU vs Alabame 2.0, college football is fine as a result.
Great, actually.

Because of who is playing (two SEC teams) and where they are playing (LSU's backyard of New Orleans), the BCS National Championship game will be an impossible ticket. The game is likely to be good, the first one boring only the attention-deficit-disordered among us.
Y'all will watch. And until then, we'll endlessly debate whether The States — Oklahoma and Boise — or tanford were worthier opponents, about good losses and bad ones and ultimately about the need for a playoff.

"The whole thing needs to be changed, there's no question about it,"Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "Everybody is just very tired of the BCS. I think that's the bottom line. Everybody is frustrated. Everybody doesn't really know what to do anymore. It doesn't make sense to anybody. I don't think anybody is happy anywhere."

Nobody except bowl execs, power conferences, the same people who always win.
No, college football did not get screwed Sunday. It won the day handily.

Who got screwed Sunday were the athletes from Oklahoma State, Boise and Stanford. "The kids" has become such a trite argument that I hate invoking it for fear of diminishing my point. The theoretical kids tend to be dragged into arguments — steroids, role models, et cetera — with the effect of cheapening, not strengthening them.

I am not talking about some theoretical 10-year-old, though. I am talking about Curtis Clay
I came to know Clay while covering TCU Horned Frog football. He is what we love about college athletics — athletics in general, really — a kid who talked his parents into letting him walk on at TCU even though this meant forgoing a scholarship elsewhere and accruing almost $50,000 in debt.

A little smallish, he earned a scholarship his redshirt sophomore season by busting his butt on special teams. His greatest moment was a touchdown catch in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl. And last season, his final season at TCU, his Frogs went undefeated.

This being the BCS, a flawed system that produces flawed results, their undefeated season was viewed not as favorably as Auburn or Oregon. It was the fine work of the same agendas, James-think and Apples that deemed Oklahoma State's one-loss to be inferior to Alabama's on Sunday. And so TCU ended up at The Rose Bowl.

It was a bribe. It was just good enough to stymie complaints of them getting screwed out of a chance at a championship.

And when we talked Monday, a year later, he talked again of how amazing that Rose Bowl experience had been and how he really can not complain. He feels for Oklahoma State, Boise State and Stanford, all one-loss teams, because not getting a chance is the worst kind of torture.
"It's funny,'' Clay said. "I was just talking to my dad a couple of days ago and I told him, 'I still believe that TCU team could have beaten anybody in nation on any given day. Oregon, Auburn, anybody.

"I'm not saying we should be national champions. What I am saying is if we had gotten in that situation, we would have won."
It is only now, a year later, as Clay is substitute teaching in preparation for fulfilling his dream of becoming a high-school teacher and football coach, that he wonders how he'd explain what happened to one of his players. How do you preach that, if you work hard enough, anything is possible, when the BCS disproves it.

"Hopefully when I get to the point, I'll be able to come up with a little better answer before then," Clay said.
"I'm a firm believer in 'work hard enough and believe in yourself and good things happen,' in athletics and everything you do. But life is not always fair. Yes, we were undefeated. But the way the system is set up didn't allow for that, and life is not fair. With anything, you may do everything in your power, all the right things and still come up short."

When Clay is being honest, the inability to play for a championship goes against everything sports supposedly represent. Games are decided between the lines, not by what a broadcaster somewhere thinks. And all of the arguments for replaying 'Bama-LSU are about what people think might happen.

Oklahoma State is all offense. Boise State does not play anybody.
Losing to Iowa State is worse than losing to LSU. How can you lose to TCU and expect to go?
We think Alabama is better. We think the SEC is better.

To determine a champion based on what we think might happen is anti-sport. It is more like life. Like Clay said, life is not fair, politics trumps all and life is too often a beauty contest and not a true measure of talent.

What he would tell Oklahoma State players and the Boise ones who undoubtedly already know is, it feels OK right now. It will be harder in a year, especially for the seniors. Because for them, there can be no making it right. And it is impossible to answer why the very things sports were supposed to stand for were scrubbed in favor of what makes money by the BCS.
No, nothing bad happened to college football Sunday — unless, of course, you count a sport letting down the very people who allow it to thrive a bad thing.

I wish OSU would of gotten into the game, and as a Sooner fan that hurts to say. Alabama is probably is the 2nd best team in the country, but as I see it, they had their chance to beat LSU already. With the system as it is now everyone says that every game counts. Well apparently the 1st time didn't count and they are doing it again. I have no problem with a rematch, but if there was a playoff, Alabama would of had to earn the rematch. As it stands now, they are just one of several one loss teams and we are bickering over whose loss is worse. It doesn't matter, they all lost one game and all have an equal claim to being in the title game. The team I feel has the least argument is Alabama because they already had their shot at LSU. The SEC I think definately gets more of a benefit of the doubt when it comes to ranking their teams. I guess the've earned it though with winning the last 5 titles. It's just frustrating because i've already seen this game. Just my thoughts.

This just makes it clear how bad we need a playoff. What ideas does everyone have for a playoff. I always thought the 8 team playoff would be best. Take the 6 conference champions from the BCS conferences and then add 2 at large teams. Any schools from outside a BCS conference get an at large bid before one from inside a BCS conference if ranked high enough. This is because if a BCS conference team wants in, it's easy. WIN YOUR CONFERENCE.

I agree that is why i do not think my team Boise belongs in this game at all they lost to TCU and did not win their conference. just like Alabama but Okalhoma state did. So I think it should have been Okalhoma State and LSU with LSU winning but heck this is just what I think

With the BCS its all about the money no two teams from the same Conference should be in the National Championship game but then the BCS has always been this way doe not matter who has the best record its who can get the BCS the most money look at 2007 Ohio St 11-2 vs LSU 11-2 (LSU Won) while Kansas and Hawaii both where 12-1.. now I hear some say none of those small school could beat any of the big schools I say how do you know that if they do not play each other, a play off is the only way to find out who is the best of the best. Only the AP can vote to split the national championship. The coaches and Harris polls are required to vote the winner of the BCS national championship game as the #1 team.

AP Poll inclusion in the BCS

In 1997, the Bowl Championship Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_Championship_Series) (BCS) was developed to try to unify the poll results by picking two teams for a "real" national championship game.

For the first several years the AP Poll factored in the determination of the BCS rankings, along with other factors including the Coaches Poll and computer-based polls. Alabama wins 14 th National Championship.
Saban wins 3 rd BCS championship.
LSU scored 6 points against Alabama in 8 regulation quarters this year.They crossed the 50 once tonight and had 92 yards of offense,The 21 -0 beating was sweet against the mad hatter. Alabama brought the crystal football home to Tuscaloosa.Saban proved again tonight when you give him time to prepare for a BCS game.He won't lose many times.Next to the Bear,Saban is the best coach ever. I was extremely pleased with the outcome of the game since I'm a BAMA man. The game was a statement that the TIDE wouldn't be denied!

However, I was mystefied as to the failure of LSU to mount a better game strategy. The Tigers are a great team, but this wasn't one of their best games regardless of the one sided score, and the A game of the TIDE. I frankly expected more from LSU.

Jamie, you reckon since the TIDE now owns the LSU House, that we could paint it Crimson?

Just kidding; it was fun and either team deserved to be national champion!

I'd like to know what LSU has been doing for the last month cause they sure weren't preparing for this game. It's like they just expected to show up and Alabama hand them the trophy; they looked like they didn't even want to be there let alone play hard. Total disaster from coaches game plan/decision making, players, offense, defense, and special teams. Honey badger a non-factor...no tigers there...only kittens! Oklahoma State couldn't have done any worse than a shut out and not crossing the 50 yard line till the 4th quarter.

Just getting in from New Orleans. I haven't been out in awhile other than to the Doctors or groceries so my daughter came and picked me up to take me to a sport bar in NO to watch the game. I was waiting for her to post a photo on FB of me in the bar taking my hat off to you

This is not what I expected, I expected Alabama to win this game, but thought it would be a very close game. Then I would have a good argument for Alabama and LSU sharing the No.1 title, and be the right call with both teams having only one loss. But in the light of last night's performance of LSU, I take my hat off and offer a bow to Bama fans and especially to Brother Mitch, you are truly No.1 and LSU No.2, still not too shabby a year for us, just one really bad game.

Congratulations, you ARE the well deserved NO.1 collage team.

Even with the loss, I enjoyed getting out with my daughter for our first trip to a sport bar (20 ft. screen) and a little pool.
