August 11, 2011, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, Congresswoman Corrine Brown along with other community leaders broke ground on the replacement Jacksonville VA Outpatient Clinic.

“Today marks an important day as we move forward with the construction of the replacement Jacksonville VA Outpatient Clinic,” said North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System Director Thomas Cappello, M.P.H., F.A.C.H.E. “When the clinic is complete it will provide more state-of-the–art services and greater access to our current and future Veterans.”

The two-story replacement clinic will have 133,500 square feet of space and 488 on-site parking spaces. This is an overall increase of 84,148 gross square feet of space from the current clinic. The replacement clinic will feature state-of-the-art technology and increased specialty services including diagnostics (CT, MRI, PET CT, and nuclear cameras), improved laboratory facilities, expansion of women’s health care, minor ambulatory surgical procedures, and expanded mental health and telehealth services.

“After having fought for years to make this clinic a reality, I am very excited for its construction to be completed so that our brave Jacksonville and Northeast Florida Veterans will not have to make the long trip to Lake City or Gainesville for timely care,” said Congresswoman Brown.

"I sincerely appreciate Secretary Shinseki for taking time out of his busy schedule to travel to Florida for this important event in support of our state's 1.6 million veterans," said Mike Prendergast, executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. "With northeast Florida's very large veterans' community, this expanded Outpatient Clinic will provide for our state's veteran's medical needs for many years to come."

The replacement Jacksonville VA Outpatient Clinic will serve 35,000 Veterans when it opens in late 2012.
