BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(Oct. 11, 2003) -- Eight hundred and fifty runners lined up at the starting line for the Volkslauf 7, or "Ultimate Challenge" Mud Run held here Oct. 11. The Marine Corps League and Detachment 2, Bulk Fuel Company A, 6th Engineer Support Battalion headquartered here has sponsored this race for seven years as a Toys for Tots fundraiser.

The race, designed to imitate the Marine Corps Confidence Course, boasts a 10K run through ditches, walls, rope swings, ladders and tunnels.

This year, the number of participants reached an all time high, said Glenn Pruett, seven-year race director. "I was stunned to see how many people wanted to run the Volkslauf."

Volkslauf is the official kick-off for Det. 2?s Toys for Tots campaign and in the past the Marine Corps League has been able to start it off with approximately $10,000.
There are two individual categories, male and female, and five team categories. They include all-male, all-female, mixed gender, military and law enforcement. Each team is made up of four members.

"The original design emphasized teamwork," said Pruett. The final obstacle in the course is a 20-yard long, 100-foot wide trench that is six-feet deep. Before reaching the finish line is an eight-foot wall emblazoned with gold USMC letters.

"Unless you are Michael Jordan, it is very hard to get over the wall alone," said Capt. Greg Butcher, Inspector-Instructor, Bakersfield. "The wall forces runners to use teamwork, even for runners competing individually."

"I've never done anything like that course in my life," said Cpl. Shaun Graves, bulk fuel specialist. "You feel like dying. But the kicker is you are doing it to yourself."

Runners and spectators could buy tee shirts, custom-made dog tags and children could get their faces painted.

The race committee prepared for the race while the unit was in Kuwait preparing to provide bulk ground refueling support to I Marine Expeditionary Force during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"Next year we are going to try and break the 1,000-mark," said Butcher.
