This is a copy of a mine that was used against us in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese schu mine had a mouse hole in the lid and two small holes for dowels.
They place a small block of TNT, after chipping out the explosive from our duds, they would meld it over a flame and pour in the form.
They armed it with a blast cap and pull type fuse.
Seeing that it's most wood, makes it hard to pick up using a mine sweep.
One day while they were sweeping Anderson trail an engineer step on a schu mine.
I still remember that loud explosion.
Up north on Operation Medina, we found a NVA base camp.
As we were leaving saw these chips and forms laying around.
I happen to glance to my left and I saw an entrance to a cave dug into this hill.
I asked if someone had check it out.
Negative was the reply.
So I took two other Marines, and watching our approach carefully.
I took my flashlight and look in.
Neatly sttacked 5 per stack was these schu mines.
Ready to be send out to be use against us.
We then rig some charges using C-4.
When they blew, half of that hill was gone.
Thanks God, we found them instead of some others.
Seeing deaths caused by schu mines played on our minds as they were intended.
I'm sure it was always on our minds.
It something that you can only talk to someone that experienced the fear of these mines.
These and booby trap 105 rounds were some of the worst cause of deaths among the American military.
Especially the "GRUNTS".
