View Full Version : Are 0311's and 0331's the only grunts?

I know there are many infantry MOS's, and each one counts, but is it only the rifleman and machinegunners that get the glory of being called a grunt? They see the most action compared to other MOS's yet there are still other people such as LAV crewman and assualtman, ect. that are infantry. So who is truly a grunt and who gets the glory?

Jacob - my advice... drop this "glory" and "true grunt" crap, the quicker the better... or you'll find a ready attitude adjustment is in order when you hit MCRD.

Well from what I heard they are the ones that instill it in your mind.

So who is truly a grunt and who gets the glory?

Why would this possibly matter? If you're joining to be called a grunt or get "glory" you're joining for the wrong reasons.

All 03s are grunts 0321 Recon.... You think they are fake grunts? 0317 Scout Sniper Let me guess phonies too. 0351 and 0352 are out there constantly patrolling and risking life and limb right next to everyone as well eh I guess no glory and they are posers.... Seriously who fed you this BS and why did you eat it all up. Sometimes I cant believe the quality of questions that we get. Ill leave it at that before I find you and haze your azz for ignorant thinking and telling a Major oh bootcamp is where they instill it in your mind like you have any idea what truly goes on there.

Not all Drill Instructors are 0311 or 0331, nor did they all necessarily want to be.

I never said they weren't grunts at all. That's why i was asking. I appreciate everything that everyone does, especially the 03xx, and everyone of them. In my mind they are all grunts. I was asking how it was in yours...It was a question not a statement.

Bornagain

It may have sounded like I was insinuating something wrong now that I read it over again, but trust me, I wasn't. Merely a question.( I ment the 03xx in the statement above when I said "in my mind they are all grunts")

That's not why I'm joining, it's just a bonus.

How old are you anyway????

You post all of the rhetorical questions:
Which MOS should I choose?
Rifleman vs. machine gunner?
Does a combat engineer go into combat?
What are tabs on uniforms?
Do combat engineers deploy?
And now are 0311s and 0331s the only grunts?

What are you driving at?

You say your occupation is a Marine wannabe. Well, if you wannabe, get on down to the recruiter, ask him/her your questions, cut all these nonsensical questions, and join the Marine Corps.

If you're just a kid, do you homework and ascertain the answers for yourself. You will learn more and retain longer.

That's why I said "from what I hear" and it's what I hear from Marines.

It's only a question. If I would have known this would happen I would not have asked it in the first place. After all, this is called "ask a Marine", isn't it? Why would I talk to only one person when I can get the input of multiple Marines?
And yes I have talked to a recruiter, all things will happen in good time. For now I need information and this is where I can get it.

Here is the problem as I see it. You ask questions, fine. But you also state you have other sources, including recruiters, yet here you are asking questions about information you already have. Are you hoping to get answers that conform to some preconceived notion of being a Marine?

Many of us get scratchy when people bring up "glory" as it applies to combat or military service. "Gory" would be a better term. In the Corps there is no such thing as a "true grunt." Everyone is a rifleman. Some non-grunts get shot at, shot, screwed up, and generally get the crap scared out of them just as much, if not more than, many grunts.

You can get killed just as dead in some other MOS. You can ask my friend who was an 0431 (embarkation specialist). Wait, you can't, he was KIA.

See my point?

Thanks, Zulu. In addition, bornagain, go back and read your earlier questions. You ask a question, get multiple good responses, and you just spin off with a new question on the same subject matter.

Yes, you learn by asking, but there does come a point that one has exhausted the subject, and you are darn near there. Go back and digest your earlier threads, questions, and answers.

And when you ask a question, do not be surprised at all if you are answered with a question.

Lastly, you come onto this site where a few good men and women take their time to answer questions. You would be well advised to stay respectful, unlike your post #12.

So, once again, How old are you?

And as Old Marine asked, "Tell me again when you are leaving for recruit training."

When school starts again i'll be a senior.

When school starts again i'll be a senior.

All right. So you want to join the Marine Corps and obviously are interested in the 03xx field.

When you ask your question about are 0311s and 0331s the only mos's that get the glory, etc., is that just a question out of curiosity?

What is the motive behind the question?

The reason I ask is what I think you will find on this site is a lot of former and current Marines who will take their time to help out and fill in poolees and those who are interested in the Marine Corps.

But if you are just asking a lot of questions out of curiosity, that starts to tweek us a bit. Understand what I am saying?

So I encourage you to think through your questions, take a bit of time to see if you can research and find the answer yourself, and when you post, make sure the questions you ask are one that you really need to know.

As far as 03xx, there is no glory in it. All Marines are taught to be basic riflemen, and are taught how to kill with their bare hands, k-bars, bayonets, etc., Those in the 03xx field specialize in the task.

So think through what you really want to be. Do not join the Marine Corps and sign up for MOS 0300 because you saw a cool poster or a John Wayne movie.

This is serious business.

By that time you should know when the Drill Instructor makes his head calls and what they are having for chow each and every day you are in Recruit Training. By then you should have your own copy of the Recruit Training Schedule and have it memorized for each and every day you are there.

In the mean time continue asking your questions as I am sure that most of the Marines on this site are on pins and needles waiting to see what is forth coming.

Good luck to you.

I understand completely. It is noted and I will make a change. I'll look things up and if I can't find an answer I will surely ask on here, and only then will I ask on here. On occasion I ask things out of curiousity, but it is mainly to help influence my decision on which MOS I will choose.

Very well. There is a wealth of information on the internet. In fact, so much so that frequently when a question is posed, that is the source for updated and accurate answers.

A key character quality for a Marine is initiative. Look it up, what it means, and how to implement it.

I have found that many young people today have zero initiative. They wait for others to do the work for them, lack motivation to seek it out themselves. Mind you, not all young people.

So, yeah, show some initiative, do your homework, you will remember better that way, and certainly post your questions.

Outstanding. Glad to see this has played itself out. While there is an old saying about 'No question is stupid', there are questions that are not well thought out, asked as a result of laziness, or just asked to 'start something'.

I'd suggest you take some time and do some READING instead of typing. Start with "With the Old Breed". Then move on from there. The Commandants reading list is an excellent place to begin, at the Pvt-LCpl level. Much of what you are looking for will be there.

Closed, for the good of the order.
