Good evening, sirs/ma'ams-
I am currently on boot leave and looking to purchase a laptop for when I hit the DLI after MCT (My MOS is 267X). My question is: Are students at the DLI issued laptops, or are we expected to purchase one ourselves? And, if we purchase our own computers, is there a specific model we need to buy (i.e., Mac or Windows)?
My apologies if this has been covered already, but I scoured the forums and couldn't anything relating to this particular topic. Anyway, thanks for any help anyone may be able to provide.
(Also: Yes, I do know I can't bring my laptop to MCT. I just wanted to buy it now while I have the time to actually research the best make/model.)

If I had to guess, you will be provided with the equipment you require to perform your duties. It would be like a grunt asking if he had to buy his own rifle or a cannon cocker buying his own howitzer. Good Luck and enjoy your time in our beloved Corps!

Laptop is a waste of time for class work, by all means get one for personnel use if you find a deal. The best thing for you to do would be to pay attention in class and take notes in your book the old fashioned way, pen or pencil. And, by chance a laptop is needed it will, as artypig stated, be provided to you. However, last thing I heard, that was not the case. Maybe some type of iPod for the audio practice, but that was about it. If anything, a student in the classroom typing away would probably be distracting to the other students and the teachers.

I second the personal use, though write down serial numbers and keep them in a safe place when you do. Stolen laptops happened quite a few times from what I saw. Also, if you do get a laptop, go somewhere like best buy or walmart. Newegg.com or tigerdirect.com, even. Those shady little kiosks that are offering special rates to military for something like "$65 a paycheck" are bogus. You're getting stiffed out of your hard earned money and end up paying $3000+ for a $700-tops laptop. I've seen wayyy too many Marines get conned into those things.

As stated
If the Corps thinks you need it ,they will issue you one
Add into this the relatively short life cycle and theft possibility

If I were voting. No

Carry on

In 06 some classes were issued Dell Latitudes, some were issued fancy tablets.
But they were for class stuff only and were neutered so you couldn't ruin them by surfing the net and exploding the hdd with porn. iPods were also issued.

Don't worry about getting one just yet though. What you finance today will be worth half what you're paying by the time you pick up in class. Save your money and buy one outright after you get there.

In '08 we were issued tablet PCs and iPods.

In 1997-'99 we were issued cassette tapes and players. :D

I still have a box filled with the tapes.

Thanks all for the advice; after reading over your responses, I'm definitely going to wait until after I arrive at the DLI to buy a personal laptop (if I buy one at all).
