"...unless first, the private family submits the prayers in writing for her approval..." I would agree with this however, given that the VFW is not sponsored by tax payer dollars and has no ties to the federal government, there is no reason for censorship of someone saying "godbless."

A solution of 'check here for your religion' on an initial form prior to formalities would be a good solution and keep everyone happy. For service members now-a-days, this should already be answered prior to deployment; i.e. religious preference, type of burial wanted, pallbearers, etc in the case of being KIA. While the right to free speech is paramount in our great nation, honoring the wishes of the fallen service member and their family should take precedence in this situation. Say a family and their son is atheist and someone comes up and says "god bless," it would be the same if someone came to a Christian family and said "praise be Allah."
