On our packs there was what was called an M buckle, but a Y buckle was used in a full field pack and I cannot find anything on it, if someoe remembers

You should mention exactly which pack system you're talking about. In my day we still used the WWII M-1941 pack system, then went to the ALICE system. Per your profile it appears you are too young for those systems.

Possibly you are talking about the Y harness that was predecessor to the H harness on the cartridge belt ??

That might be it getting the M buckle mixed up with something else

Before the LBV we had H harness and before that came the Y harness. I know that we wore our packs over them but they were independent of each other unless you are talking about the butt packs.
