Suspected Taliban group attacks in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Suspected Taliban fighters fired on U.S. forces with rocket propelled grenades and small arms in eastern Afghanistan, prompting a firefight that lasted about two hours, the U.S. military said Monday. There were no reported U.S. casualties.
The clash occurred Saturday in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar province near the border with Pakistan, said U.S. military spokesman Maj. Richard Sater. Some three suspected Taliban attacked American forces stationed at guard posts near a U.S. base in the area, and the soldiers returned fire.

“Coalition forces operating near the firebase in Asadabad engaged three anti-coalition soldiers who were directing small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades at their guard posts Saturday night,” Sater said in a statement from Bagram Air Base, the military headquarters north of the capital, Kabul.

Sater said the soldiers called in U.S. air support, but it was not clear which aircraft took part. He said it was not clear if any of the suspected Taliban fighters were killed or injured.

Taliban and al-Qaida rebels are launching increasingly bold assaults in recent months, raiding police stations, killing aid workers and confronting U.S. troops in growing numbers.

Many of the attacks have occurred in the south and east of the country, near the border with Pakistan. Afghan and western officials have long complained that the insurgents have found a safe haven in Pakistan, crossing the border frequently to launch attacks.

Meanwhile, the military updated a report on another attack Saturday, this one against U.S. troops observing an Afghan army training exercise at a base on the outskirts of the capital.

The American troops returned fire and called for backup from the International Security Assistance Force, a 5,500-strong NATO-led peacekeeping mission charged with keeping the peace in Kabul.

The military on Monday said that two insurgents were captured in the incident, raising the number from one. A U.S. soldier who was slightly injured was quickly treated and returned to duty.
