Memorial run honors those lost in 1983 Beirut bombing

As the Camp Lejeune Grand Prix Series winds down for the season, one of its final events is also one of the most important - the Beirut Memorial 10K.
Held each year on the Saturday before the anniversary of the Beirut bombing in Lebanon, the race, the fourth in this year's five-race series, is designed to increase awareness about the bombing and to remember the lives that were lost.
"Several years ago I designed the Beirut Memorial 10k in order to bring attention to the victims of the Beirut bombing," said Grand Prix Series Coordinator Mike Marion. "It seems that memories fade the longer the period of time between disasters such as this. New generations become unaware of sacrifices that were made."
With this year marking the 20th anniversary of the Beirut bombing, Marion said this year's race has added importance.
"The event has taken on additional significance lately. While those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Beirut are honored, we also honor all those who in the military that have given so much," said Marion.
The race, according to Marion, normally draws between 400 and 500 participants each year and is open to the public.
This year a one-mile fun run has been incorporated into the event to allow non-runners to participate and a special Unit Pride award has been established as well.
The Unit Pride award will be given to the military unit that with the most participants in the Beirut Memorial Run. A unit plaque will be awarded and a trophy will also be awarded, but will rotate to the unit winner at the race each year.
The Beirut Memorial 10K begins at 8 a.m. at the Camp Johnson Gymnasium. The race is held on a scenic, flat 6.2 mile course that winds through Camp Johnson and attracts participants from all over the country.
Advance registration before Wednesday is $15 for active-duty, reserve and retired service members and $18 for civilians. Late registration is $20 on race day. Registration for the one-mile fun run is $10 before Wednesday and $15 on race day.
All participants receive a commemorative T-shirt and more than 150 awards will be given out in several different categories. Free refreshments will be available to all participants.
