HEADQUARTERS, U. S. MARINE CORPS, Washington (Oct. 10, 2003) -- Plans, Policy and Operations Division announced the creation of an additional military occupational specialty and career force during July in accordance with the Secretary of Defense Planning Guidance 04-09.

As the basis upon which to build the new information operations career force, PP&O, Information Operations and Space Integration Branch, also referred to as PLI, established an additional MOS, Information Operations staff officer (AMOS 9934). Since 2001, PLI has led an initiative to redefine existing billets in the operating forces and supporting establishment, which resulted in the identification of 47 information operations billets throughout the Marine Corps.

MarAdmin 273/03, Information Operations Career Force and Space Cadre, outlines the application process, which includes the requirement for top-secret security clearance eligibility. Marines interested in pursuing the AMOS attend either the two-week Naval Information Warfare Staff Officer's Course or the Joint Information Warfare Staff Officer's Course, funded by their parent commands.

Subsequent assignment of AMOS 9934 is contingent upon a six-month tour in an IO billet after education requirements are met. After meeting requirements, applicants submit an administrative action form to Headquarters Marine Corps, Plans, Policy and Operations Division, PLI requesting the 9934 AMOS.

"Currently, there is no limit to how many officers we designate with the 9934 MOS, " said Capt. Shawn Cunningham, joint information operations action officer. "However, officers currently filling MAGTF IO billets will be given priority to NIWSOC school seats."

Officers considering serving in information operations billets should contact their career counselors prior to applying, Cunningham said. Those officers should also consult Marine Corps Warfighting Publication 3-40.4, which provides more details on the roles and pillars of information operations.

All officers are eligible to apply for the additional MOS. PLI board members will screen and evaluate each applicant's record in order to determine applicants' understanding of the IO pillars and their ability to effectively integrate them into a MAGTF information operations plan.

For more information about the application process or to request placement in one of the six annual courses, contact Cunningham at cunninghamsp@hqmc.usmc.mil.
