Absolutely nothing but barracks, a chow hall, and an e-club nearby. Would suggest having a set of wheels to get anywhere.

I won't have my own, me and few other reserve Marines will be attaching with an AD unit. I will have a good friend out there though that is with 2nd AAV's that can escort me around on the weekends until we ship out.

Hahahaha, yeah I never thought about it being April 1st/fools day.

Best place to live is French Creek. Alot of non-stop action there.
Recon, Anglico, Arty, Comm, Motor T barracks.
Just watch out for the Swamp. 2nd Recon likes to play in there :)

Good Luck

Not quite correct there...2nd Recon is living out in Courthouse Bay now. I think they moved out there about 5 or 6 years ago.

French Creek is filled with a lot of REMFs (rear echelon mother f******). They do have the best chow hall though. Outside of that, it's pretty much like everywhere else on that crappy base.

Yeah have fun with that. FYSA its a big deal to pronounce it "LeJern" now. Gay. The French Creek gym is nice when its not under renovation...pluss you're about mile job from the faux-Crossfit Gym (Area 5 gym? Called the HIT or HITT gym). Give "coach" a high five if you go there.

Good luck and enjoy the AD experience during your workup. What unit are you coming from and when are you getting here (AFG)? IIMEF should be RIPing pretty soon here in AFG...so looks like ya'll will be on an offset delpoyment time.

I will be deploying with a (convoy)Security Co. from CLB6. We have a window of time this summer to be in country. My orders have a few specific dates but not sure I should post them due to OPSEC.

As far a French Creek, it's not a bad place to be if you can got over the roaches. Other than that there is a nice gym, mini PX, and pizza joint within walking distance. Definitely get with someone that has wheels though. Head out to the beach on the weekends. Top Sail is GTG. If you stay at the base on the weekend you will die of boredom.

thanks, that is what everyone else here and elsewhere has said also. I have a good friend stationed out there that lives off base and by the beach so I have somewhere to go on the weekends.

I guess alot has changed in French Creek since the over 30 years when I was there. Those Hotel Style Barracks were like Brand New and the base was OUTSTANDING..............

I stayed in those barracks like 6 months after they built new ones (maybe '07?) and they were already ****ty! Gotta love Marines. No cockroaches or anything, just stuff starting to fall apart. Other than other's reccomendations, checking out Wilmington for some good food and a nice little downtown/riverwalk area. If you party, Emerald Isle, ECU, or Raliegh isn't too bad but is far away.

Yeah, you don't want to talk about troop movements or dates, that's a traditional no-no. That info gets published all too often, but you might as well not add to infosec violations stuff.

I was curious what reserve unit you were from. I'm a reservists, though I've been mostly on AD since 2007 (my only source of income) and am on my fourth deployment right now, getting ready to convoy out to the field for a couple months (finally after two cancelled ASRs).

Hey man, good luck and have a good time with your guys...be safe, and watch where you walk.

Stayed there for the month of Jan while coming back from Afghan with 2/6. The MWR isn't bad if you don't feel like paying for internet access. The PX is good considering the size, the chicken sandwiches are money. The gym should be open by now. You'll be about a 25 minute walk from mainside should you have the desire for some wendys or the main PX. It's not bad, it's not great.

Ahh French Creek. I seem to remember spending damn near a pay check trying to get out in town from there.

I would venture to stay that my buddies that were in back in 2006 and I have stood in formations longer in front of French Creek 310 (I think it was 310) than any other Marine has every accumulated in any other place from any period of time.

Hey, you can rent a car for relatively cheap on base if you reserve it in time (you know, the smallest one...they go quick). I think it was something like 19.99 a day, plus whatever other expenses they sneak in there (more if you need insurance). Its nice to get have the freedom to get away. My unit rented us a couple SUVs for a 10 man team...all of us in our mid twentites to thirties, and it started to suck pilling everyone into a car, deciding where to eat, who needs a hair cut, who doesn't, who wants to go spend their paycheck at Xtreme Outfitter or TAG, et al. Its nice having freedom to go out on your own or with just a friend or two. Cheers man, I'm in Sangin right now...maybe cross paths in a few months.
