Last night I smashed my finger very badly. I expect to lose my fingernail any time. I ship out soon, is this something that will mess up my ship date? Or will they let me go while my fingernail is regrowing?

There are no doctors frequenting this website. If you have a medical question that hasn’t already been answered by searching the forums, you’ll have to contact a recruiting office. If they cannot answer your question, you may be directed to a medical representative from MEPS.

Again, read that one carefully. We are Marines (and a few Corpsman). We are not doctors. Medical questions will usually be answered by someone cutting and pasting a section from the about.com website.

Piercing the nail with a red hot needle ,then applying a band-aid usually works.

If they still have MRP in Boot Camp, it appears you will spend a lot of time there.

What did you use to smash your finga?

I was picking up a huge pipe to get to some firewood. When I tossed the pipe it came back and hit into my finger. It was sort of a going away party, for a friend. One of my friends there is studying to be a nurse so she helped me out with ice and took me to my father. My father is one of those strange natural healer types, has been for 30+ years.

My recruiter told me now that I need a crash helmet and a restraint jacket, and that I am not allowed to walk and chew gum, or anything that I could possibly hurt myself doing. If I don't know if I can hurt myself I'm supposed to call him and ask if I can do it. He also told me that if my fingernail is bad enough MEPS might not let me ship on time.

If I shoot myself in the eye I'll be sure to accomplish my mission before falling, and hopefully it'll be a ricochet off another bullet I put into America's enemy.

It wasn't till recently that I've had some minor injuries, I don't have a medical record at all. Partially because I don't see doctors, and never had to see a surgeon.

You leave in 11 days......

Either stress or bad luck the past month or so......has been keeping you at sick call.

I agree with your recruiter....stay in the hooch....send out for food.......call the US Marshall service to escort your caravan to MEPS.....

Once on the plane you should be allright.....

After that you belong to Uncle Sam!

Good luck.....and stay from sick call and home remedies!

Yer OK Kid,, at least you've been keeping us in laughs.

Softballs' correct, we aren't much official medical help in here.

Doc DanM said it correctly about the HOT needle/or small nail and melting the fingernail to vent the blood blister action under the nail. ( Quicker done the better ) cover the hole with a bandaid at least untill it gets tired of bleeding,
next day , epoxy up the hole and cross your fingers the patch holds till the finger starts sorta feeling normal.

Banged fingernails is common practice in construction and we deal with them all the time. I normaly carry around a small set of drill bits in what is called a "Torch Tip Drill Kit " and use one of the small drills for making the hole.

the hole into the nail relieves the blood pressure and a lot of the pain. BUT i think by now the pressure has stopped building and you're gonna be stuck with the results.
Good Luck to you Youngster in boot camp.

P.S. Becarefull where you aim your rifle when they give you live ammo at the range,,, at the minimum , we don't want you shooting yourself in the foot.

P.S.P.S.

Someday you'll look back on this and laugh .( I hope )
Now, stop your crying and go give it hell

Ok, so I stabbed it and let out all the dark blood, before and after soaking it in H2O2. Then covered it in this natural black ointment that has compfrey and some other natural stuff. Before I was using an antibiotic from a med kit. Doesn't hurt anymore but isn't quite as pretty as my face yet...

You'll be fine - fingernail shouldn't be an issue if it doesn't cause any performance problems.

its going to die and eventually break off, they most always do; crescent shaped.
the dying nail is on it's own now because the blood supply to the damaged separated horn (nail) is compromised or gone, for now. patching with adhesive is indifferent at best, it usually pops out.

it doesn't hurt and should be a non factor when the dead nail eventually breaks off, because the underlying sensitive tissue dries and hardens while new horn replaces what is missing. just try to keep the dry area from cracking so it doesn't infect, and go about your business

Nope, that is my naturally funky looking mug. I survived that with just a bruised knee, had I fallen it would have been the last of me.

Just keep your head and a$$ wired together. Fingernail issues will be the last thing you will be thinking about when you hit the yellow footprints.

Do a good job and when you get back.... post a pix in uniform with a proper Marine haircut and shave!

Make us proud!

If you make it through bootcamp without hurting yourself they should give you some kind of award or something lol.

Be particularly careful on the rifle range (they give you real bullets there you know), in the swimming pool, practicing martial arts, rappelling off the tower, going through the obstacle course, and the Crucible. Well, in your case, you may want to be especially vigilant ironing your uniform, shaving, and eating with metal utensils!

Seriously, be careful but kick some butt and be sure to let us know how you did after you graduate.

Good luck to you on the beginning of your journey.

The EGA itself seems an ample award.

So, I'm gonna have my brother push my muscle back in, then super glue and butterfly tape my finger.

Taviah...you only have a week before you go to MCRD. Best thing for your shoulder right now is rest. Bad enough, you're going to be pushed to the limits in boot camp, no need to push yourself to the limits now and re-injure your shoulder and cause yourself more problems before you leave.
Rest, young man, rest!!!

Taviah
03-12-11, 03:11 PM
My shoulder is no longer my concern, it is a slit in my finger with muscle sticking out of the skin. On further inspection I figure pushing the muscle in now would cause gangrene, and cutting the muscle off would apparently take longer to heal.... So I put BF&C on and prayer. I fear that I won't be shipping on time.

Why don't you just have your family doctor take a look at it.
It's better to be safe than sorry!

Taviah
03-12-11, 03:30 PM
A family doctor would be nice, but I am broke as a bum with no insurance...Even driving to the nearest doctor is more than my $20 bucks can afford. I'm just letting my old man do his Voodoo stuff and natural herb stuff to try to heal it.

The ER would cut the tissue, and sew my finger up which would likely take a while longer to heal. I had been thinking of having my brother cut it with his razor sharp Cold-steel knife, but my dad said it would take longer for the muscle to heal. I don't care about pain, or heal time, I care about appearances of looking healed and being able to perform.

It's a good thing the Corps doesn't use M-1's anymore. You'd be a perfect candidate for an M-1 thumb or two, or three. Good luck son

Sir, my pain tolerance is rather high, believe it or not, it has had to be. Besides my brother sharpens his 1055 damascus hollow ground knife so that it would cut so easy that it wouldn't matter anyway.

Cutting the muscle was what this nice crazy lady (2 PhDs and a Masters lives in a trailer with 23 miniature dogs) told me, my brother offered his knife and I accepted, but my old man said it would take longer.

So Taviah, what's the latest update on your finger injury? How's it healing for you?

Taviah
03-19-11, 09:47 PM
Pretty quickly, the bottom is still split open but the muscle that was hanging out is gone. Still a bit swollen and I am still waiting for the fingernail to work its way off as a new one grows. It is truly amazing how fast it is healing, I think by the 28th It'll be good enough to start boot.

Are you still wearing your helmet....protective clothing....staying away from food and drink unless you have a testor....and staying in your padded cell 23 hours except for yard time and a shower?

Pretty much, I pray for visitors too, but they never come.
