This is concerning my wife - She wants me to be in one piece on account of our boys - I want a combat MOS personally, but I told her that I will first try for Intel (I take the ASVAB weds; I have to go Reserve route and then Active later because of three dependents. I don't mind due to I have 1 year of school left.)

My question is: what MOS' are available that can put me in an area of ops. where I might see or at least have the opportunity to volunteer for front line duty.

I feel I have a better chance at becoming a lifer as an officer with these types of experiences - to be honest I'm just glad I have a shot at the title - but I want to stay in!

(Dont know if it matters but: I'm 23, Polysci major with 2 strapping boys: recruiter is willing to work with me to fill reserve spot and stated that it is *possible to go to active duty)

Yes it i possible to go active duty from reserves but let me tell you right now that it is a long drawn out process and the fact that you have 3 dependents is gonna slow it down and hinder it even more.

I have been through the process twice now only to be denied from the active duty side. And I am single with no dependents.

Also your MOS choices will be somewhat limited to what is available in your area/state. Look at what softballcatch posted above me

At this stage I wouldn't be all super-moto about definitely being a "lifer." I think being away from your wife and kids is going to be harder than you are expecting, and will make you question if you want to turn it into a pattern throughout their childhoods. I've known a lot of "lifers" who are counting down the days until their EAS. They are by no means bad Marines, but 20 years with the Marine Corps takes a very unique person.

If you want "front line duty" I'd suggest either going 03 or trying to get into 6th Motors as a driver, they send guys out constantly and their are often opportunities to volunteer. They have found themselves in the thick of it through both wars.

I will take your wife's side and think about your kids and what it will be like for them to grow up without a father. I'm sure you know people are dying in these wars. It's a lot to put a family through even if you come out alright. The only way I wouldn't do this again is if I had already had kids, but I can only speak for myself.

Good luck,

Mike
