Stupid question, but is the IST (Initial strength test) the fitness test you take to enter boot? Or do you need to actually take the PFT?

Also is the scoring for them the same?

Thank you in advance for the help on this "noobish" question.

Yes, before you can ship to boot camp you must pass the IST which is(ours) being able to do 4 pull-ups, run 1.5 miles in less than 13:30(14:15 for females), and 60 crunches.

You do the PFT later down the line.

I'm not sure about the scoring for the IST. I'm pretty sure the pull-ups and crunches are the same and you just double your run time and see what it would be for PFT.

The actual IST numbers are lower then that being Pullups-2, Crunches-22 in 2 minutes, and a 1.5 run in 13:38.

They dont expect you to do the minimum and I think if you did you'll be PT'd to death.

At our Recruiting Station the min. requirements are 6 Pull-Ups, 60 sit-ups (2 min.), and 1.5mi run in 12:30 min.

For our RSS, the minimum is 10 pull ups, 70 crunches, and 12 minutes for the 1.5 mile. Unfortunately, this is pretty much impossible for some of the Poolees, so they get their ass chewed out. If some kid can only do 5 pullups, he'll do 10... one way or another...

For our RSS, 10 pullups, 100 crunches, and 1.5 in under 11 minutes.

Guess I'm lucky not to be with your RSS. Pullups? Yes. Crunches? Eh... it varies. Mile? Pfff... lol. I suck at running, so getting a 1.5 mile time under 11 minutes would be like trying to heist Ft. Knox.

i find it interesting different recruiting stations have different requirements, at ours its 5 pull ups, 45 or 55 crunches( i cant remember) and 12:30 mile and a half run. i just recently found out that once at boot camp we only need to run 13:30 which is great for me because running is my weak point. still have to run 12:30 before they'll let us go. i've heard they do this so when you get boot you can handle the run even if you're tired and worn out, if u can run 12:30 normally u should be able to run 13:30 a little tired

Ours is the same as your except we have 65 crunches, but same 5 pull ups 12:30 run, but they tell us its because if they set the standard at the minimum what happens if you get to boot, and you failed by just a little.

You'd be amazed how many times I've seen people, not just other poolees, aiming for the mininum standards. They are happy just skating by. By the recruiters setting the bar higher not only does it send the message to work harder but it ensures they go through boot camp prepared.

Poolee was supposed to ship this past monday, he did 4 pull ups and not the 5 my RSS has as its minimum, so his ship date got pushed a month.

Well said, us poolees should always strive to exceed the minimum standards.
