I would like to know if it is possible for a reserve 0311 to attend Reconaissance Training Company during the contract time. I am going to boot camp then SOI and my recruiter told me that it was not possible for me to attend Recon after SOI. I am going to be a full time college student. Is it possible for me to attend recon at a different time in my 6x2 reserve contract?

Yes, thank you - I know that 0321 is an infantry MOS, and I know that the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion is an infantry unit. But I also know that a Marine rifle company, a Marine Weapons Company, and a Marine Infantry Battalion do not rate 0321 reconnaissance Marines in their table of organization.

0313 LAV crewman is an infantry MOS too, but unless you are joining 4th LARB, then you're not going to become an 0313.

If your reserve unit is a rifle company (K Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines for example) then your MOS will be limited to those on the rifle company Table of Organization (TO). A Marine rifle company may be tasked to conduct reconnaissance missions - but they don't rate 0321s in their TO.

To specifically answer your question - it depends on the unit that you are assigned to and the needs of the Marine Corps at the time. I would say that unless you reserve unit is a reconnaissance unit, then no.

You could possibly do a lat-move to a reserve recon unit. I had a friend who I went to Iraq with do that. Although, you will have to travel to where the reserve recon unit drills, also it would be contingent on you passing their indoc and BRC. Also, you'd have to get your unit to give the ok to move.

And that (above) was going to be my suggestion as well. It's a stretch but possible. I would wait until I'd been in about a year or so before trying that option, however. It'll be important that your current unit gives you a good rec.
